Honeymoon In Philadelphia

Why Philadelphia?

Yes, we took our honeymoon to Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Why Philly you ask? Here's why.

The band my husband was in when we met was doing a Metalfest in New Jersey. We drove, so we stopped in Philly for a day. My husband really wanted to tour Eastern State Penitentiary, but they didn't open for another week. He was upset I can tell you. He decided we were going to come back and soon. This was in May of 2001. It just so happened, we were going to get married that July, so we chose to take our honeymoon there.

Another reason we wanted to go there was because they had some really cool haunted places we wanted to visit, and my husband is a big Benjamin Franklin fan.

What We Did

We were only going to be in Philly for 5 days, so we had to pick and choose what we did. There's only so many hours in a day you know.

Our hotel was right on the Delaware River. If you looked across, you could see Camden, New Jersey. We were a little disappointed that we couldn't rent a car, but it turned out we didn't really need one. You can get just about anywhere by bus, train, or boat. The streets are kind of narrow anyways, and the parking is pretty awful.

I seriously can't remember what days we did what, but we got married on Monday, went to Philly on Wednesday, and stayed until Sunday. We went for a horse and buggy ride through the city, went on a "Haunted Places" tour, saw the Philadelphia Zoo, hit a bar or two, saw an open air market, the Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall. We even crossed the river and saw an aquarium in New Jersey.

We saved the Eastern State Penitentiary tour for Saturday. That was the last day we were going to be there, and we wanted to see all of that. After all, that was the biggest reason we were there.

I'm sure you're thinking that couldn't have been all that romantic, but it was, and we had a great time!

We're Going Back

There were so many things we didn't get to see because we ran out of time. When our son is a little bit older, maybe on our 10th wedding anniversary, we're going to go back. We have a lot of things we still want to see there, and we're going to do the Eastern State Tour again.

I just spent 5 days in Philly for jury duty - I was right in the historic district and it was so cool to be able to visit the Mint, Franklin's grave, the Federal courthouse, the Constitution and all the *excellent* restaurants near Arch and 4th ... don't miss South Street on your next trip.

Too ad I didn't know you guys. I have friends all over South Jersey and Philly. Most of them work at or run clubs and restaurants out there and I could have helped you guys have a better Philly experience. Anyway, if you want to feel a little bit of nostalgia, visit my "PHILLY CHEESESTEAKS" lens.
