DIY Hong Bao Lantern
This lens shows you step by step instruction on how to use red packets to make a simple lantern. This Chinese New Year red packet craft is very easy and is suitable for kids to try them out.
You will need:
1) 12 hong baos of the same design and size.
2) Adhesive.
3) A stapler.
4) 2 golden strings.
5) 1 hong bao for the bottom decoration (you can use a different red packet from above)
Buy your hong bao on eBay
or call them Chinese New Year red packets if you want.
Making the bottom set
-
First of all, make sure all 12 hong bao were sealed. Some hong bao came with self adhesive, some don't. For those that do not have self adhesive, use some glue to seal off the hong baos.

-
Divided the 12 hong baos into 2, there should be 6 hong baos in each set. Use one of the set to make the bottom set for the lantern. Fold 1cm at the top of the hong bao as shown in the picture.

-
Make a marking on the top of the hong bao by folding it into half as shown in the picture. Do not press the whole thing down. Just press it on the top.

-
Fold the hong bao as shown in the picture below. Repeat step 2 to 4 for all 6 hong baos.

-
Stapler 2 hong baos together as shown in the picture.

-
Stapler all 6 folded hong baos together. Leave the last hong bao open as shown in the picture below. You will need to tape the bottom decoration to the bottom set before you stapler and close the bottom set. Refer to here if you want to DIY your own decoration.

Making the top set
-
Use the reminding 6 hong baos, fold them as shown in the pictures below. The steps are similar except that you will have to work on different side of the hong baos.

-
Stapler all the hong baos together. Remember to leave one side open for the string.

-
Tape the string to the inside of the top set. Stapler to close the set.

Sticking both set of hong baos together
-
You should have 2 set of hong baos that look like the oicture shown.

-
Stapler the 2 set of hong baos together as shown in the picture.

-
Your lantern is completed.

- Very cool! I love this whole series of red packet lenses. I knew, vaguely, that red packets signify prosperity but I never thought about making decorations with them.
