Hoodoo in Truth and Practice
Hoodoo is Not a Religion
There is No Hoodoo God
Hoodoo is not a religion, and it is not Voodoo. Voodoo and Hoodoo share many superstitions and beliefs; however, this is due to their shared locales and origins. Voodoo is a complete system of beliefs, while Hoodoo is folk magic, superstition, and root doctoring. The Bible is however, a powerful talisman in Hoodoo, especially the Old Testament. The ability of God to create man from dirt for example is right in line with Hoodoo tradition. Christianity is almost always practiced alongside Hoodoo.
The African American, Native American, and European populations of the South have all contributed their age old superstitions to create a rich collection of beliefs that is Hoodoo. While African Americans have generally been considered the largest population of practitioners of Hoodooo, the beliefs, sometimes considered "wives tales", have been common in most house holds of the South for generations. These beliefs often vary from state to state and even county to county.
Other practices associated with Hoodoo are the folk remedies of the South and what is known as "root doctoring". Hoodoo in this form likely grew out of the lack of proper medical care in the deep South from 1700 to 1800. Some of these root remedies work.
What is Mojo
It can be several things
A Mojo in the Hoodoo tradition is a talisman, normally a small sack of items, herbs, stones, or other item that has significance. A Mojo could be made for you by a root doctor to aid with a sickness, turmoil in one's love life or even luck. To lose your Mojo would be a grave problem for someone who truly believed in it's power.
The word mojo has worked it's way into song and popular culture through the introduction of the term by blues musicians such as Muddy Waters and others not as well known. Getting your Mojo back would also be a very good thing if it has been lost.
"Voodoo charms" could be considered interrelated with Mojo.
When one speaks of losing their mojo today they generally mean losing their charisma or luck.

Hoodoo on Wikipedia
Hoodoo is a form of predominantly African-American traditional folk magic. Also known as conjure, it is a tradition of magical practice that developed from the syncretism of a number of separate cultures and magical traditions.
Hoodoo incorporates practices from African and Native American traditions, as well as some European magical practices and grimoires. While folk practices like hoodoo are trans-cultural phenomena, what is particularly innovative in this tradition is the "remarkably efficacious use of biblical figures" in its practices and in the lives of its practitioners. Smith, Theophus H. 1994. Conjuring Culture: Biblical Formations of Black America. New York: Oxford University Press. p. 3.
The word hoodoo first was documented in American English in 1875 and was listed as a noun or a transitive verb. For example, in the Creedence Clearwater Revival song "Born on the Bayou," the line "I can still hear that old hound dog barking, chasin' down a hoodoo there," refers to a hoodoo doctor; someone who practices hoodoo. Merriam Webster Online In African American Vernacular English (AAVE), it is often used to describe a magic spell or potion, but it may also be used as an adjective for a practitioner. Regional synonyms for hoodoo include conjuration, conjure, witchcraft, or rootwork.Hyatt, Harry Middleton. 1970-1978. Hoodoo--Conjuration--Witchcraft--Rootwork. 5 vols. Hannibal: Western
They are not all synonyms, however. For example, witchcraft is problematic as a synonym in that it can imply a moral judgment regarding the practice of hoodoo (i.e. it is evil), or it can be confused with the contemporary Wicca religion. Moreover, a hoodoo practitioner is not to be understood as a rootworker if he or she does not use roots and herbs in their magical practices. Thus, rootwork can be understood as a subcategory or a "type" of hoodoo practice.
