Hook in Hand - You Won't Believe How His Luck Changed!

Hook In Hand Makes for a Great Fishing Story!

I didn't notice the hook in hand at first. He was just another fisherman in the long queue, waiting to weigh in the day's catch. In this particular competition most of the "big prizes" required that the angler weigh in a fish on both Saturday and Sunday of the tournament weekend to be eligible. If it were me, I would have gone straight to the medical center, hook in hand, fish on boat. Not David McCulloch, he was brave and bold. He even managed to muster a smile for his photo, despite the fact that he was holding an 8.07kg king fish. That's nearly 18 pounds of fish pressing into that hook in hand.

After weigh in he simply had someone (a registered nurse who happened to be at the annual Gulf Harbour Yacht Club Fishing Tournament) remove the hook from his hand, bandage it up and then finally he was off to the medical center for a tetanus shot.

His luck was soon to change. Day two brought him limited pain, no need for even a bandage and another successful fishing day. This year's GHYC's fishing competition had already provided him what every fisherman most wants - a good fishing story to tell. With a twist of fate, his day was to get even better. He was about to beat the odds and walk away as the proud owner of a new $30,000 boat - a 1 in 10,000 chance and the glory was his.

So now that we know the story has a happy ending, let's have some fun!

What Do You Think - Should He Have Weighed in his Fish or Gone Straight to the Med Center?

Remember, had he gone to the medical center instead of weighing in, he wouldn't have qualified to win the boat. Hind sight is everything, the odds were 10,000 to 1.

A Serious Look at Removing a Fish Hook From Your Hand

How To Remove a Fish Hook From Your Hand

I am no expert in this area, and regardless of which method you chose, I have been advised that your next trip should be to the medical center as you may need a tetanus shot. Here is the method that was used to extract this hook:
  • First, the club located a medical professional (there was a large crowd, so this was easy)
  • The barb end was very nearly all way through, so it was pushed out
  • Next, the barb was cut off
  • Remainder of hook was carefully pulled out
  • Wound was cleaned, dressed and angler was sent off to the medical center for a tetanus shot.

Fishing is a common recreational sport. While serious injuries are uncommon, penetrating tissue trauma involving fishhooks frequently occurs. Most of these injuries are minor and can be treated in the office without difficulty. All fishhook injuries require careful evaluation of surrounding tissue before attempting removal.

Remove Fish hooks - Simple Survival
It has been my observation that there are only three kinds of fishermen in the world, those who have never had a fishhook injury, those that have, and those that don't answer honestly. I have also discovered that those who have never been hurt by a hook will eventually experience the injury, if they fish long enough.

Cool lens! I wouldn't have left either. It pays to carry snippers in the tacklebox for these such occasions! lol

This funny fish story gets a big OUCH! Gal I know got hooked in the leg on a canoe trip by her drunk boyfriend - actually her ex-boyfriend the second she was out of that canoe...go figure.

Talk about Squidoo addiction. Just proves you can turn anything into a lens. Thanks for not getting to close up. Glad he's doing better and got a boat to boot.

See, this is exactly why I keep a small wire clipper in my tackle box...It has been so helpful in removing fish hooks from varios places when my kids were younger lol...fun lens! :)

When I saw your Squidcast I debated with myself about whether I should come over for a closer look. I was a little freaked out, but I'm still glad I dropped by.

I love this quirky lens. You were in the right place at the right time with the camera. My sister got a fish hook stuck in her mouth once when she was little (Before you ask, I had nothing to do with it). Blessed.

Hubby has done this on a few occasions. Fished with hook in hand all day then gone to seek Medical attn afterward. Or...push it through, cut off the barb, then pull it back through. **I cringe**.
