The best way to manage your social media: Hootsuite

Posts from your friends on Facebook to be looked at, tweets from the people you follow to be read on Twitter and career connections to make on LinkedIn. We all have busy lives and the addition of social media and our wish to keep up with it just adds to that. Social media can take up a large chunk of your day if you're not careful.

Luckily there's an easier way. A way where you can manage and post to your favorite social media sites with just one application. It's an application I use every day, whether on my computer or mobile phone to share, find and engage in social media. That application is Hootsuite.

Hootsuite introduction and features

Hootsuite is an application that can be used to manage most popular social media networks (Twitter, Facebook and Facebook pages, LinkedIn, Ping.fm, blogs on Wordpress.com (so no selfhosted Wordpress blogs), Myspace, Foursquare and Mixi) . Hootsuite runs in your browser by logging in on the Hootsuite website. If you're using Google Chrome as your browser you can download Hootsuite as a separate app and there's an extension for Mozilla's Firefox which helps you share things you find on the web in Hootsuite. You can use the same "Hootlet" for Internet Explorer and Apple Safari (this video shows you how to use the Hootlet).

Features:

Hootsuite has a ton of features but there will be a difference in what a personal or business user will need and use.

Personal:

A personal user probably wants to share and engage with the people he follows in one place where he can look at all his social media accounts. Hootsuite makes that possible with the following features:

  • Manage multiple social media accounts

  • RSS feed integration (for pulling posts from your personal blog)

  • Customize the way Hootsuite looks

Business (same as above but also):
A business user will ask more from the app he or she will use to market the company on all social media channels. They will need the same features as a personal user, but are also looking for a way to measure their impact. These features will help with that:

  • Custom Analytics (also Google Analytics integration (in the Pro plan; see below))

  • Schedule messages

  • Team collaboration

Of course some personal users will use features that are meant for business users and vice versa, but this is just to show that Hootsuite can be used by every kind of social media user.

Free and Paid plans

Hootsuite has 3 kinds of accounts:

Personal: This will suit most personal users. You can manage up to 5 social media accounts, have some analytics and import of RSS feeds available. This plan is ad-supported, which means these will show up in your timeline as sponsored tweets.
Pro: This will cost you $ 5.99 a month. For that you will receive everything of the free account, but without the ads. Also unlimited social profiles and RSS feeds. Also integration of Google Analytics, Facebook Insight and URL parameters.
Enterprise: this plan is meant for large business that employ a multi person social media department.

Most people/business will go for either the personal or pro accounts.

Signing up

Singing up is easy and will take you less than a minute. You can do so here. What are you waiting for? Owke, maybe you'll need some more convincing. Let look at some other Hootsuite treats.

How to set up Hootsuite

After signing up it's just a matter of setting it all up. Although there's an abundance of FAQ's and Help articles available on the website, this video by Matt Stefanik shows you how easy it is to set up an account.

Best Hootsuite feature: Twitter lists

The easiest way to manage your Twitter stream is by using Twitter's own feature called lists. With these lists you can make tweet-streams of users that share some similarity or topic. You import the users you want to have in that particular list into the list. You can do that on the Twitter website, but you can also use the list-function that is embedded in Hootsuite. In this video Ivan Walsh shows you how to do just that.

Hootsuite mobile apps

Leaving the house doesn't mean you're leaving behind your friends on social media. Hootsuite provides free mobile apps for all Android, Apple IOS, Blackberry and Keitai devices.

Although these mobile apps don't offer all the features and functionality of the web app, you will be able to access your networks and share, react and engage at your hearts content.
