I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my hope in your word. - Psalm 119:147

What is prayer, and why do we do it? C.S. Lewis writes, "Prayer in the sense of petition, asking for things, is a small part of it; confession and penitence are its threshold, adoration its sanctuary, the presence and vision and enjoyment of God its bread and wine. In it God shows Himself to us."
Does God answer our prayers? Lewis adds, "...That He answers prayers is a corollary."
What gives us the right to pray? Again, C.S. Lewis: "The possibility of personal intercourse between the little, hairless bipeds called Men and the inconceivable, self-existent Being
which underlies all phenomena and all space and time, may seem to such
people nothing surprising, nothing that we had not a right to expect."

What Prayer Looks Like

There are as many different ways to pray as there are prayers to be said. Alone or surrounded by friends, in sorrow or celebration, with shouts of praise or in silent contemplation. A prayer is communicating with God.

Does Prayer Actually Work?

Scientists have been trying for years to answer once and for all the questions: Does prayer really work? If it works, then how? Research from one study may suggest a strong correlation between prayer and medical healing, while another may see no such link. Scientists often claim that the reason prayer works is merely a placebo affect - nothing more than giving sugar water instead of real medicine - that it is our expectations of success that bring about positive results.
While no one has yet been able to quantify definitely the successfulness of prayer, there is one way to know for sure: ask those who have personally experienced the effects.
Scientific Research of Prayer: Can the Power of Prayer Be Proven?
Throughout time, the power of prayer has been questioned by science. The analytical mind of the scientist calls for proof of the existence of a higher being. These scientists, both the faithful and nonbelievers alike, have produced studies into the affects of prayer on our physical as well as spiritual well being. Although most of us, who possess the belief that prayer can and does work, do not require physical, quantitative proof of the power of prayer, it is interesting to read the results of these studies.
Does Prayer Work? Do Prayer Studies Work?
Can the efficacy of prayer be determined through a double-blind clinical trial? Do studies measure prayer in ways that even make sense? Perhaps we're learning more about medical science than about the healing power of prayer.
Does Prayer Work?
A recent study by Professor Leonard Leibovici, of the Rabin Medical Center in Israel, provides evidence that prayer can heal.
Do Prayer Studies Work?
We all know patients who recover from their diseases and we acknowlege the powerful role that prayer played in their recovery. However, we know just as many patients who have died despite being surrounded by a huge network of prayer. And we express all kinds of excuses as to why prayer didn't work.
