Fun Hopscotch Patterns For Family Fun!
A couple of years ago, Sara, my little daughter wanted to try drawing the hopscotch pattern on her own. She got down on her hands and knees and gave it her best shot. It turned out really wiggly, but we played on it anyway. My son Sam mentioned that the pattern looked like a snake. We decided to draw a hopscotch pattern in the shape of a snake (and even named him Stanley) and so the Silly Snake pattern was born. The kids loved it and I loved that they love having Papa playing with them.
Eventually, we experimented with all sorts of patterns. Not content with just creating new patterns, we also created our own rules (read that we MANGLED every rule to suit us).
The hopscotch patterns on this lens are some of the better ones we created and have had lots of fun playing them. I'm enjoying every opportunity I get to play hopscotch with them. When Mom gets in on the action, we split up into 2 teams : Sara and Me will be one team and Sam and Mom will be the other. Then, we bend, malign and break every rule as we try to outdo each other...
It's great fun... give it a go!
Hopscotch - The Basic Rules

- The first player tosses his token into the first space.
- Hopping on one leg, the player skips onto each numbered space, first in ascending order. He must hop over the space where his token is.
- The player is allowed to step on HOME (the space indicated by footprints) with both feet. This is also the space for the player to take a short rest. He turns around and readies himself to continue.
- The player must hop back in descending order to the starting position. On the way back, he must stop on the space just before the one where his token is, bend and pick up his token while still balancing on one leg.
- After picking up the token, the player hops onto the space where the token was and continues hopping on the rest of the spaces.
- The next player then takes a turn.
- When a player has successfully completed tossing this token into all spaces, he is then allowed to try and "land" a home. What this means is that he repeats steps 1 to 5 but after he completes hopping, he stands in front of space #1, with his back to the hopscotch pattern and tosses his token over his shoulder. If his token lands within any space (except HOME), he can claim that space as his "home". The owner of the space is allowed to step on that space with both feet. All others are NOT ALLOWED to hop on that space.
The player loses his turn if he :
- loses balance while picking up his token and his other foot or hand touches the ground.
- his token touches the hopscotch pattern lines.
- he falls.
- he touches the hopscotch pattern lines with his foot while hopping.
He will then have to resume by tossing his token in the space that he failed to complete AFTER the other players have had their turns.
What You Need To Play (These) Hopscotch Games
- Flat playing area approx 15 feet x 15 feet.
- Chalk to draw your hopscotch pattern if you're playing on a floor. If you're playing on flat ground/earth, a large stick is great for drawing your hopscotch pattern.
- Each player needs to have a token. Flattened metal bottlecaps make great tokens.
- At least 2 players. It's no fun playing by yourself, but not more than 6 because it's REALLY no fun waiting ages for your turn.
- You may need an adult to help draw the patterns.
- Bucket and mop. Only if you want to erase those chalk patterns from the driveway.
Silly Snake Hopscotch
This is a simple hopscotch pattern for playing with smaller kids. You can make the snake more wiggly if you like.HOME is the head of the snake.
Each player takes turns to run through steps 1 to 5.
After he successfully completes every number, he repeats the order, but this time, he gets to do step 7 to try and claim a space as his home. HOME (the space indicated by the footprints) cannot be claimed as an individual player's home.
The winner is the player who collects the MOST homes.
Fancy Flower Hopscotch
A challenging pattern with more spaces for bigger kids. Players have to hop in a circle on the petals which makes it more difficult to keep their balance.HOME is the center of the flower.
Each player takes turns to run through steps 1 to 5 (in How To Play Hopscotch).
After he successfully completes every number, he repeats the order, but this time, he gets to do step 7 to try and claim a space as his home. HOME (the space indicated by the footprints) cannot be claimed as an individual player's home.
The winner is the player who collects the MOST homes.
Dizzy Dragonfly Hopscotch
Stepping variation is included in this pattern. You hop on one leg on spaces 1 to 3, then both feet on spaces 4 & 5 (one foot on each wing). For turn no 4 & 5, the player can toss his token into either the left or right wing. Tip : It's better to aim for the part near the center of Dizzy Dragonfly's body.
HOME is Dizzy Dragonfly's eyes (ouch).
Shoot The Meteors Hopscotch
This pattern is for boys who think hopscotch is for "giiiiirls". The basic game-play is the same as the others except for how the winner is determined (explained below).A spaceship finds itself in the middle of a meteor shower and the crew must blast its way through the meteors.
HOME is the tip of the spaceship.
Players are divided into 2 teams. After each player successfully completes every number, he repeats the order, but this time, he gets to do step 7 to try and blast the numbered meteors by landing his token on them.
There are 2 ways to determine the winner :
- If a player blasts a meteor, he gets one point and the meteor is erased. The winning team is the one who blasts the most meteors. You can draw as many meteors as you want before you begin playing.
- Points are assigned to each meteor (example : big meteors are worth 2 points, small meteors are worth 10 points - because they're more difficult to land on). When a player's token lands on a meteor, he earns those points, but the meteor isn't erased. The winning team is the one that collects the most points.
If you notice, there's an optional bomb in the pattern. If you land your token on the bomb, you "blast" the other team, meaning you choose one player from that team to lose a turn.
Blind The Alien Hopscotch
The basic game-play is the same as "Blast The Meteors".An alien monster is wreaking havoc in your neighbourhood and no one can do anything because he sees everything with his many, many eyeballs!
HOME is the tip of the top of the alien monster.
Players are divided into 2 teams. After each player successfully completes every number, he repeats the order, then gets to do step 7 to try and try and blind the alien monsters eyes by landing his token on them.
There are 2 ways to determine the winner :
- If a player blasts an eye, he gets one point and the eye is erased. The winning team is the one who blasts the most eyes. You can draw as many eyes as you want before you begin playing.
- Points are assigned to each eye. When a player's token lands (blasts) an alien monster eye, he earns those points, but the eye isn't erased. The winning team is the one that collects the most points.
Space Exploration Hopscotch
You are on a rocket. Your mission is to visit every planet in our solar system.HOME is the tip of the rocket.
Players are divided into 2 teams. After each player successfully completes every number, he repeats the order, but this time, he gets to do step 7 to try and land on one of the planets.
The winning teams is determined one of 2 ways :
- Points are assigned to each planet (example : big planets are worth 2 points, small ones are worth 10 points - because they're more difficult to land on). When a player's token lands on a planet, he earns those points for his team The winning team is the one that collects the most points.
- The first team that manages to visit ALL the planets wins - not as easy as you think
