Horary: Accurately Answering Questions for 3000 Years
Horary astrology is an ancient branch of the astrological art (though no one knows exactly how old it is), which has been practiced in the East and the West for thousands of years. The word horary comes from the Greek, and means "of the hour." This is because horary charts are set for the minute and hour of the client's question to the astrologer.
The earliest known reference to recognizable horary techniques is in the writings of Dorotheus of Sidon, an astrologer writing in the 1st century A.D. (Fun fact: Dorotheus's book, the Pentateuch, is written entirely in verse. It's a rhyming nonfiction book!)
The Arabs subsequently adopted horary from the Greek tradition, and we get horoscopes for many horary questions in their literature like: "Will I get the kingship?" The Arabian astrologers had some pretty well-placed clients!
So What Makes Horary So Cool?
- The best things about horary are as follows:
- Horary is specific. "When will I get married?" "In three years, though it won't be the guy you expect."
- Horary is practical. "Where is my ring?" "You dropped it on the stairs, and it's now under the stairs, and your husband will find it."
- Horary is incisive. "Should I take this job?" "Yes, because you will make a great deal of money, though you will never get along with your boss."
Horary Reading: "When Will the Repairman Show Up?"
Astrology Stoops to Answer Banal Questions
Our dishwasher was broken, or at least severely compromised, so we called out a repairman. He said he would show up anywhere between 11am-1pm, but I had errands to run, and needed to know just when he would arrive. So I cast a horary chart. The goal would be to find an aspect between my planets and the repairman's, to see when he'd show up. He is shown by Saturn, ruler of the 6th house of employees. Saturn is applying to the Ascendant in 3 degrees, and since the Ascendant symbolizes me, this means he'd show up in 3 hours. But it's not that simple.
I noticed Saturn is very weak; it is in its detriment in Leo. The repairman was not in good shape, so no matter how promising the aspect, he was not going to be able to show up. Not good. In desperation, I hunted around the chart for another indicator.
Then I saw that the Sun (ruler of the first house of self, so representing me) was applying to conjoin Mercury, the natural ruler of servants. Even better, Mercury represents a wet servant, as it was in Cancer, a cardinal water sign (indicating fast-moving water), accurately representing a dishwasher repairman.
This Sun-Mercury aspect would perfect in about 1 degree. So he'd come in 1 hour, at 11 am! And he did.
But note that Mercury is retrograde, meaning it looks to be moving backwards in the sky. It turns out that a part was broken that had to be ordered, and the repairman will be coming back later to install it and finish the repair.
The amazing thing is that horary can achieve this level of accuracy with virtually any question. If you are intrigued, and want to check out a horary reading, visit my Astrology Reading page. If you need more info, read on.
Okay, Horary Really Is Cool. How Do I Do It?
Recommended Horary Astrology Reading
This is the order in which I would read the recommended books, if I were new to the topic:
1. Horary Rediscovered by Olivia Barclay - a good, basic, common-sense guide to the concepts that form the building blocks of horary astrology.
2. Christian Astrology, Volumes 1 & 2 by William Lilly - THE book on horary astrology, written by the shining light of horary astrology, Lilly himself. First published in the 17th century, still highly relevant today. Packed full of insights.
3. The Real Astrology by John Frawley - an award-winning book on several astrological topics (horary included), written by a modern-day horary master.
4. The Real Astrology Applied by John Frawley - a more hands-on, nose-to-the-grindstone continuation of the previous book. Best read after the Real Astrology, to get the theoretical groundwork down first.
5. The Horary Textbook by John Frawley - a very specific, step-by-step guidebook for aspiring horary practitioners. Dense, informative, and filled to the covers with helpful information.

Carl Jung Said It Best.
The idea with horary is that this moment has different qualities from that moment. You chose a particular minute, hour, day, and location to ask your question, and the resulting horoscope must reflect the answer to it.
That is the short answer regarding the horary moment. But our 21st century minds resist this explanation, however appealing the concept may be intellectually. Look at it this way (in the words of Geoffrey Cornelius, from his book The Moment of Astrology): "The planets and their positions mirror the occult quality of the totality of the macrocosm-microcosm 'at that moment.'" So the planets do not cause anything, they move in sympathy with the terrestrial events.
But I don't want to get too far afield in astrological philosophy and cosmology (there is a lens in the works for this as well).
