England Expects . . .
. . . that every man will do his duty"
The famous 'England expects' signal was sent shortly before the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21st, 1805. This battle was hugely important. Britain was under the threat of invasion and a victory was crucial. However, the signal, intended as a moral boost for the sailors, was not the one that was actually supposed to have been sent. The original message was, "England confides that every man will do his duty", which reads very differently. The signalman, John Pasco suggested the word 'confides' be replaced with 'expects' because a signal for the latter already existed, but the former would have to be spelt out letter by letter which would be more time consuming.
