What are Horcuxes?
Horcruxes are dark magical objects that hold a piece of your soul. They were first introduced in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, when young Tom Riddle asked Professor Slughorn about them. Slughorn told Riddle that they were objects that hold a bit of your soul, however you must kill in order to make them. Riddle then proposed the idea of splitting your soul into seven pieces, a number that he thought to have magical properties. From that day on, Tom Riddle/Voldemort started making horcruxes. Every horcrux appeared sometime before the seventh book.
Lord Voldemort
Lord Voldemort was born Tom Riddle in a muggle orphanage. Throughout his childhood, he realized there was something different about him and found out he was right when Dumbledore came to tell him he was a wizard. He loved Hogwarts, but had no friends as he did not want any. He was fascinated with the dark arts and was exceptionally good at it. When he left Hogwarts he got a job at Borgus and Burke's and quickly asked for a job at Hogwarts. Professor Dippet said he was too young and should come back in a few years time. When he came back ten years later, Dumbledore was headmaster. Dumbledore, who had always seen right through Tom Riddle, refused him the job. He rose to power and stayed in power for 11 years before a curse backfired when trying to kill Harry Potter, who was only a year old at the time. He returned 13 years later and stayed in power for three years. He was killed after his wand backfired as he was trying to kill Harry Potter in the Great Hall of Hogwarts. Horcrux #1: The Diary
Destroyed: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Hidden: with Lucius Malfoy
After murdering: Myrtle (Moaning Myrtle)
Appearing in the second book (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), it was our first and best look into the power of a horcrux. Ginny Weasley found
the diary and poured her heart and soul into its pages. Soon, she had given the Tom Riddle inside the diary enough of herself, that he could control her. He made her do things like write on the wall of the school and kill roosters in the grounds. In the end, he brought her down to the Chamber of Secrets in order to gain enough power from her to create a body of his own. Harry Potter goes to save her, but has to fight a basilisk. The basilisk bit Harry on the arm, but was saved by Fawkes the phoenix, whose tears have healing powers. He then stabbed the diary with the fang that had before been in his arm. The diary, along with the Tom Riddle in the Chamber, was destroyed. In the sixth book, we find out that this is the first horcrux to be destroyed.Picture is from this site.
Horcrux #2: The Gaunt Ring
Destroyed: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (but we see it destroyed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)
Hidden: Gaunt House
After murdering: Tom Riddle (Sr.)
The ring belonged to the family of Tom Riddle's mother, the Gaunts. This side was the side that were wizards and were related to Salazar Slytherin. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore is seen wearing the ring, before and after we see the memory in which it is
first introduced. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, we find out that Dumbledore put the ring on his hand before destroying the Horcrux, therefore killing the hand. Snape told him that he had about one year to live. Snape killed him near to the end of the one year. The ring was also a deathly hallow, the Resurrection Stone. It brings the dead "back to life", although it only shows you a shadow of them. It was hidden in the Snitch that Harry carried around with him throughout Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. He used it to bring back his mother and father, Sirius, and Lupin to give him moral support while facing his death against Lord Voldemort.

The Books!
Horcrux #3: Slytherin's Locket
Destroyed: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Hidden: a cave Tom Riddle visited as a child
After murdering: a muggle tramp
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, there was a mention to "a locket that no one could open" while Harry, Ron, Hermionie, Sirius, and the Weasleys were cleaning Sirius' house. At the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore and Harry go to a cave that Tom Riddle visited with his orphanage, only to find that the locket was not there. Instead there was a not saying: To the Dark Lord,I know I will be dead long before you read this but I want you to know that it was I who discovered your secret. I have stolen the real Horcrux and intend to destroy it as soon as I can. I face death in the hope that when you meet your match, you will be mortal once more.
R.A.B.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry realizes that R.A.B. is Sirius' brother and the locket is the one they saw two summers before. However, the locket was taken by the Ministry. The trio break into the Ministry and steal the locket from Dolores Umbridge (defense against the dark arts teacher in Harry Potter and the Oder of the Phoenix). Ron destroyed the locket when Harry opened it with Parsyltongue. It was destroyed with the sword of Griffindor.

Horcrux #4: Hufflepuff's Goblet
Destroyed: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Hidden: Gringotts
After murdering: Hepzibah Smith
In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore shows Harry a memory of an old woman meeting with Tom Riddle. She shows him two things: Slytherin's locket and Hufflepuff's goblet. He later comes back, kills the old lady and steals the locket and goblet, which he makes into horcruxes. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry gets captured by the Death Eaters, who raid their tent and find the sword of Griffindor, which is supposedly locked in Bellatrix Lestrage's vault at Gringotts. When she realizes that the trio may have broken into the vault, she gets scared, making Harry think that there may be something down there. They break into Gringotts and steal the cup, but lose the sword. They carry the cup around, until they reach Hogwarts, where Ron imitates Parsyltongue to open the Chamber of Secrets in order to get a Basilisk fang. Hermionie then destroys the goblet. Horcrux #5: Ravenclaw's Diadem
Destroyed: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Hidden: Room of Requirement at Hogwarts
After murdering: an Albanian peasant
This was the only horcrux which we didn't know much about until the end. We knew that the last horcrux probably belonged to Ravenclaw, but nothing else.
The diadem first appeared in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, although we did not know its true value. Harry was running from Snape, trying to hide his potions book. He ran to the Room of Requirement and found a huge room with things people had hidden over the years at Hogwarts. So he didn't lose the book, he took a bust and put a diadem on top of it, to mark the spot where the book was hidden. At the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry realizes that it was the last horcrux, and goes to find it. Harry, Ron, and Hermionie begin to look for it, but are interrupted by Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle. Goyle then burns down the Room of Requirement, inadvertently destroying the horcrux.Picture is from this site.
And, of course, the movies!
Horcrux #6: Nagini
Destroyed: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Hidden: with Voldemort
After murdering: Bertha Jorkins
We first see Nagini in the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in the Riddle House. She tells Voldemort (in parsyltongue) that a muggle, Frank Bryce, is outside the room, so Voldemort calls him in and kills him. In Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix, Nagini goes to the Ministry of Magic to steal something out of the Department of Ministries. However, Arthur Weasley is guarding the door. Nagini attacks him, leaving his life in the balance. Harry sees this in a dream, through the eyes of the snake, and worries he did it. His friends assure him that he only saw it, he did not actually do it. At the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, when Harry is walking into the forest to face Voldemort, he finds Neville Longbottom and tells him to kill Nagini, if he can, as Nagini was the last horcrux to be destroyed. During Voldemort's victory march to Hogwarts, Neville openly defies him, so Voldemort puts the Sorting Hat on his head and lights it on fire. Neville pulled the hat off of his head and pulled out the sword of Griffindor. He then uses it to chop of Nagini's head. After killing Nagini, Voldemort became fully mortal and could be killed.Picture is from this site.
Surprise Horcrux #7: Harry Potter
Dumbledore just tells him not to worry about it. Dumbledore then goes on to explain that Harry could still live, if he chooses to, because Voldemort has his blood in his veins (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). Harry is then faced with a choice and decides to go back and face Voldemort. Harry then feigns death, but Voldemort sends Narcissa Malfoy over to make sure he is dead. She, of course, realizes he isn't dead and asks if her son is in the castle. Harry gives her a tiny nod and she tells Voldemort that Harry is dead. Hagrid carries him back to the castle, where Neville kills Nagini. A battle then ensues. Harry then starts moving around, unbeknownst to anyone else until he is face to face with Voldemort. Harry had realized that the Elder Wand never belonged to Voldemort, it had belonged to Draco Malfoy when he had disarmed Dumbledore. As Harry had stolen Malfoy's wand at the Malfoy Manor, the Elder Wand was now Harry's. Voldemort disregarded this information and used the killing curse, which backfired, killing Voldemort. The fact that Harry was a horcrux tied up a lot of loose ends in the story. For example, Harry had a special connection to both Voldemort and Nagini, because of the presence of Voldemort's soul in each of them. Harry's scar also hurt when Voldemort was near or feeling particularly emotional because the bit of Voldemort's soul inside Harry yearned to go back to Voldemort (according to JK Rowling). After the bit of Voldemort's soul inside Harry was killed, Harry's scar never hurt again and he could no longer speak parsyltongue.

So, how do you make a horcrux?
Only two people on this planet know the answer: JK Rowling and her publisher. JK Rowling will release a Harry Potter encyclopedia in a few years, which will tell us various pieces of information that she left out of the books. Among that information will be how to make a horcrux, but, until then, we have to stay in the dark. However, when JK Rowling's editor found out what it was, she said "it made me what to puke". Hey, its a clue. JK Rowling on Twitter
