    Another great lens! :)
Looking for next one - eventually, raw and organic food that helps to cure cancer!

I'm just now making the transition toward a semi-raw food diet. I believe in all things in moderation, but I was immoderate in my use of cooked and prepared (preservative-loaded) foods until recently. You've given me helpful information, thanks.

thank you for a great deal of information - I've been a fan of raw food for years and it is good to see so many more people supporting the cause. The health benefts are worth it on their own.

Oh my gosh- I cannot "like" this lens enough!! I had cancer about 5 years ago, and discovered a Raw Foods Diet during chemo. Following a predominantly raw diet for the last 4 years or so has had innumerable positive effects on my health. I'm now a Holistic Health Coach, teaching others what I know about this diet, but I haven't gotten too much into hormonal/bc correlations with raw diets. Thanks so much for all the amazing resources, I'll be back to buy a book or two for sure :)

Hi! Thank you for the info. I've been doing mostly (90% +) raw & still feel I have hormonal imbalance. I am curious, is that why you have some natural hormone replacement books suggested, for those of us who still need more help? Or do you still think people who do 100% organic raw won't need the hormone replacement? (I haven't been doing all organic, but trying to be very careful, & washing my food thoroughly). I thought that's what you believed - ? Sorry, sometimes hard to "hear" tone in a message, this is NOT meant as arguementative AT ALL, just curious why you made the suggestions for natural hormone replacement books... thanks!
  • OrganicSkin Oct 29, 2011 @ 7:34 pm | delete
    Hi Jenny,

Thanks for your great question. I don't expect everyone with hormone imbalance to have success with raw food, moreover they may not want to do it or have trouble for a myriad of reasons to go raw. If people are more inclined to treat hormones naturally then that makes me happy, whether thats using diet, herbs, vitamins, meditation, fitness, weight loss etc Versus the synthetic chemical alternatives. The books I have posted are all authors that propose natural ways of treating hormone imbalance.

"Supplementation of progesterone boosting herbs were fantastic, however I became dependent on them. As soon as I tried to stop them, my issues would return."

I would love to know which "progesterone boosting" herbs you used. My take would be that if the problems came back when you stopped using them. It would be best to keep using them.

You didn't say what you are doing for hormone balance. Are you going the Suzanne Somers route? I noticed that you have her books posted. If so, have you found a completely natural progesterone to use. I had some from a pharmacy that had USP Progesterone, but also contained chemicals.

I like you am on a very high raw, organic diet, but my progesterone is still l o w....

Thanks for any feedback you may offer. I know this post has been around for while :)
  • OrganicSkin Feb 19, 2011 @ 8:26 pm | delete
    Hi Andrea,

The progesterone boosting herbs were a mixture from my naturopath at the time and included chaste tree, dong quai, false unicorn root & licorice. Under the sub-heading 'my thoughts' summaries my approach as an alternative to the herbs I had become dependent upon not unlike a drug even though they were all natural.

If you are going to use progesterone creams, please only use bio-identical such as what you get in 100% wild yam preparations. Synthetic hormones are fraught with danger and I encourage you to read the info presented by Sherrill Sellman in her book 'Hormone Heresy' for further info and evidence.

For your interest and as an update, I have since found that hormonally I can control things being 100% and low fat however I do find this difficult to sustain from a social and food pleasure point of view. I am aware stress levels play an important role too.

    hope this helps,

    kristine

    Hi Kristine,

Thank you so much for your reply. I know it's been awhile! The last posted comment generated another e-mail which reminded me of your reply. I don't remember if I thanked you or not :P I'm much older than you so I may need to use more of an "arsenal" (the herbs and progesterone cream) to get my progesterone levels up.

I'm glad that you have found how to keep things in balance with your diet.

    :),

I have had your experience of a longer cycle, shorter bleeding, and little or no cramps by just changing my diet in the last week before my period (I'm vegetarian in general). I avoid caffiene, sugar, wheat, meat, and dairy, and try to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, some raw, but not even close to all. (I'm not a big soy eater.)I start the day with hot water with either lemon or apple cider vinegar and honey. I think keeping my gut moving is essential. Just to corroborate your results to some extent!

I hear what you are saying & I have been advised similar things to what you have said by health professionals. However I did try the mainstream way of treating candida as you have described well, & it didn't work for me. I mentioned in this lens that I wrote another lens about raw food and candida. This lens details in detail my background with candida, the approaches I tried & what worked for me, which was low fat, 100% raw.

Regarding the granny smith apple thing - I guess this is a contentious issue because I have been advised by various resources & health professionals, that if you are going to go on a anti-candida diet (conventional anti-sugar, anti-yeast etc), then you can have a small amount of tart fruit like berries & green apples. I've not heard above green apples being a problem before. However, given that what worked for me was a low fat, raw vegan diet I ate as much fruit as I wanted including really sweet fruit, and cured my candida.
  • Serendipity Laboratories Sep 19, 2009 @ 10:18 pm | delete
I note that you are having problems with candida..and yet you recommend in one of your recipes that people use the Granny Smith apple in the salad....Granny Smith apples should be avoided because they are very yeasty and excaserbate the condition of candida.
You should also minimise any of the following vinegar, fermented products and/or high sugar content foods such as fruits.., honey, sugar, maple syrup...etc...these all help to feed and increase the candida..a better way is to remove these items ingredients for at least one month, whilst continuing your raw food /vegetables diet and you should see a vast improvement.
