Scary Story Ideas For Writers To Develop

I'm allowing people to see some of my horror story ideas in the hopes of motivating myself into developing some of my own story writing. The reasoning behind this is a little embarrassing, but since it bears on me deciding to make this lens I'll give you some broad strokes of the tale. I didn't really discover the creative bug until I was an adult, but as I found myself reading good stories, watching good movies and looking at great art I discovered that I longed to create such things of my own. I wanted to say that my job was to create. I quickly began to accumulate ideas, and as I loved the horror genre, a lot of them leaned towards the darker side of things. The problem I ran into was that I constantly began to see great horror story ideas everywhere I looked. I thoroughly enjoyed jotting down the gist of the frightening tale, but as I began to develop it further another great concept always came along which I had to get down on paper. This went on for years and although I knew that I would never have writer's block, I also realized that I had no creations as of yet. Hopefully, this lens will help me realize that some of my scary stories are worth creating and necessary to put out into the universe. Now that you know the purpose of the lens, let's get to the stuff with more meat on the bones, shall we?

Horror Story Ideas #1-5

Some of these story ideas may make you feel... uncomfortable.

horror-story-ideas-lightning1-As your grandfather lies on his deathbed, he tells you of a terrible crime he committed and got away with many years ago. He also tells you that his freedom was the result of a spell he performed and that you should expect a visit from a dark man. "He will come out of the shadows."

2-A hiker is trapped in a freak snowstorm, but finds shelter in an old cave. As the weeks pass he grows hungry. Water is not a problem, but he is a meat eater and he begins to look at his lower leg. "There's a lot of good muscle on the lower leg." He draws out his knife and prepares to do what's necessary to survive.

3-A small child begins to take a huge interest in horror films. He eventually begins to experiment with small animals, but eventually decides to graduate to humans. His only decision is to focus on adults or other children. He begins to sneak out at night on a regular basis.

4-An old serial killer is suffering from the equivalent of writer's block and has not killed in 3 years... until he reads an article about horror story ideas.

5-You are invited to a swanky party full of rich and boring people. To amuse yourself you ask someone a rather innocent question, "Do you know what it's like to kill a person?" Someone says yes.

Horror Story Ideas #6-10

Story writing that focuses on creatures and monsters.

horror-story-ideas-raven6-Larry is a necrophiliac and often visits old cemeteries at night to indulge in his hobby. Imagine his surprise after spending hours digging through rooted ground at hearing sounds coming from inside a casket. Larry smiles... and then begins to open it.

7-There is an old legend about the land the Preston family just bought at a rock bottom price. The family that used to live in the city is going to find out that they definitely need to do research before buying real estate in the country for a price that is too good to believe.

8-A person has visited the same forest at night for the past 5 months. They always stay until dawn; until they had to get ready to go to work. They had heard a rumor that the forest is inhabited by some sort of monster. Tonight they will find out that the rumors are true as the monster introduces itself - and regrets it.

9-Ricky has been given the OK to get a pet dog and despite looking all day, he just couldn't find one he wanted. They were heading home when they saw someone putting out a "dog for sale" sign at a house. The boy fell in love with the animal and despite the parents' reservations it was purchased. So, what were the parents nervous about? They had never seen a dog that stood 6 ft. tall and had solid red eyes, even though they were assured by the owner that these were just medical oddities.

10-Emily knew the risks of calling forth such ancient creatures for simple favors, but she just had to make Josh love her. Nothing else was more important. She had done everything the book said to do down to the last detail and felt confident her spell would be successful. It's a shame that she didn't realize the typo on the word "tree." Someone had forgot the letter h. Now, Emily has to live inside her body along side a powerful demon - a demon that takes control more often than she wants it to.

Make Sure You Don't Lose Your Thoughts

After all, memory can be a fickle thing.

In my opinion, there are no tools of greater importance to writers than a good writing device and a sturdy notebook. With these two things you will never have to fear losing any horror story ideas (or ideas of any kind) that come to mind ever so quickly and disappear even quicker. The only caveat that I offer is that you have to remember to always have them on you or near you at all times.

Moleskine Ruled Notebook Large

I bought my first Moleskine shortly after I started writing and I quickly found that I used it (along with a good pen) more than my computer as far as my story writing was concerned. I prefer the large ones, though I do keep some pocket-sized around to take with me when I travel. They have held up extremely well and as a result, I still have notes that are decades old.

Horror Story Ideas #11-14

Spooky tales that involve ghosts and similar creatures of the supernatural.

scary-story-ideas-graveyard11-Rose was quite comfortable with Henry having an imaginary friend, after all, she had had one when she was little and turned out fine. Tom was a little worried about him talking to nothing all the time, but she wasn't. She picked up his clothes and headed to his room; the door was closed, as usual. She opened it just in time to see a checker piece move across the board - by itself.

12-As the spirit sat and watched the girl on the other side of the mirror, he felt such sadness. Despite being dead for only a short time, it felt like an eternity. He looked at the wife he used to be married too with loving eyes as she put the gun into her mouth. "It'll be good to see her again," he thought.

13-Ouija boards are tricky contraptions and even the most seasoned demonologists will tell you to treat them with extreme caution. As the salesman was going over the finer points about using the device, all Karen could think about was why someone would bother to create one using human bones. She would later regret not learning why.

14-A first time author who considers himself a creative writer becomes worried when he can't come up with a good idea for his second book. In an act of desperation he takes out a very old book that his grandfather brought back from the homeland. As he turns the book to an ancient spell, he seriously contemplates contacting H.P. Lovecraft and making a slave out of him.

A Lot Of Songs Are Actually Stories Set To Music

And there's a lot of creepy music out there.

Some of the best songs that resonate with me are the ones in which a story is told or gives you a hint of stories being told. Your imagination begins to fill with imagery as the words and music fill your ears and you begin to create your vision for the song you're listening to. It's a really great way to inspire one to creativity which is why I've included some of my favorite songs with a darker edge. If you can't find some horror story ideas from listening to these, I have to wonder about you.

I used to love having nightmares when I went to bed. Luckily for me, I wrote most of those scary story ideas down, because I don't have that many nightmares any more. So sad.
