The Horrorpops : A Match Made In Hades

Ranked #5,831 in Music, #161,889 overall

Scary / Beautiful The Horror Pops

I had never heard of the Horrorpops until my younger sister introduced them to me. I listened to their music and was turned on to it pretty quickly. This band is visually, rhythmically and tastefully pleasing. What is more delicious than a lollipop? How about a beautiful, brutal vocalist who not only has an amazing voice, but lugs around a stand up bass? How about beats that make you want to dance, even though they are singing about things like zombies and ghouls.

Patricia Day and Kim Neckroman

spawning a new breed of music

  • Patricia Day (Copenhagen Denmark) and her band Peanut Pump Gun were doing their own thing in the punk scene. They were asked to be one of the opening acts in a music festival hosted in Cologne, Germany. The headliners were a psychobilly that had gained quite a name for themselves, called the Necromantix.
  • Kim Nekroman, a former naval officer in the Danish army, formed the band the Necromantix. The Necromantix enjoyed a faithful fan base and was quickly accepted into the psychobilly music scene. A scene that was predominately British. In 1996 the Necromantix were headlining a big music festival in Cologne, Germany.

Fiendish Friends

and the spawning a new breed of music

Patricia Day and Kim Nekroman met in Cologne, Germany for the first time. Regardless of the fact that they were both part of the Copenhagen punk scene, they had never met prior to this concert. They both had a fondness of alt music and quickly became friends. They soon began to have a romantic and relationship. They did have a lovechild, The Horrorpops

Nec-romance : This spooky pair eventually tie the knot

A lovechild

The love of music was the breeding source for the Horrorpops. Patricia and Nekroman decided to create a lovechild that would have bits and pieces of the type of music they loved. From 80's mod and retro, to punk and rockabilly. Classifying The Horrorpops is not really something you can do, because they really don't fit any one genre, they have that rockabilly twang, a little bit of that psychobilly influence and of course even a little bit of pop.

Day and Nekroman decided to switch instruments, Kim Nekroman; when playing with the Nekromatics plays a notorious upright double bass,

that he had built himself. Day, was used to playing the guitar. The pair decided to trade instruments Nekroman (an already experienced guitatr player) was going to play lead guitar, and he taught Patricia how to play the upright bass. Kim states that this role swapping allow them to perceive music differently on a creative aspect.

The Horrorpops is formed of Patricia Day; lead vocalist who jams on a monster bass that was also built by Kim. The bass is somewhat the band's mascot and an important focal point. Kim plays lead guitar, and does some vocalization. Patricia's friend from band Strawberry Slaughterhouse, Niedermeier joined and the trio was cemented. Later the band added two go-go dancers that are a regular part of the act, and definitley make for a great show.

This first cd by The Horrorpops was released on February 10,2004. Many thought that the fact that it featured Nekroman, meant he was the one creating the pounding bassline that was featured on the CD. Regardless of the cover art, many Nekromantix fans did not realize that it was Patricia Day on bass. They were quickly judged for being too poppy, not psychobilly enough, but the fact was that they did not plan on being boxed into a genre, they wanted to create music that took sounds from more than one genre.

Bring It On

This anticipated sequel was finally released in 2005. While still delivering that sound that only pertains to The Horrorpops, Patricia manages to make the bad girls look good. With sounds reminiscent of 80's pop punk and even a country-ish song, Bring It On is a killer predecessor to Hell Yeah!

Kiss Kiss Kill Kill

An homage to the silver screen

Buy the Audio CD

The latest release by The Horrorpops is Kiss Kiss Kill Kill. This themed album has a very classic silver screen feel to it, just by looking at the album cover, you know that Hollywood is written all over it. With songs like Thelma and Louise, and Hitchcock Starlet you know you are in for a treat. Better get that popcorn popping. The band never ceases to amaze me and bring such a diverse sound to the table, not all songs are in tune with the theme, many argue that this is their best album yet, and they have matured but managed to maintain that edge.
