If you can't go for a ride in real life, why not ride a virtual horse?

When I was a young horse crazy kid I dreamed of having a horse game for our computer. It's taken game manufacturers a little while to realise that nearly every girl goes through a horsey stage, but I guess they've got the message now. Today I walked along an aisle in a video game store and noticed that there was an entire section devoted to horse games on PC!

The number of games has been growing for some time, but now there are so many that it's become a lot more difficult to choose!

To help, I've reviewed a couple of my favourites, and taken a look at what else is out there from the perspective of someone who loves horses and good quality games! There are plenty of links to each of the games on Amazon and eBay to make things easy for you. I hope you find the information on this page to be useful!

My Horse and Me

The movement sensors in the Wii remote give My Horse and Me a huge advantage over horse video games on other consoles - the way you control your horse is much more realistic than just pushing buttons.

It takes a little while to get used to the controls. To begin with I did a lot of over-steering and ended up going the wrong way a few times, which was quite frustrating!

But once you get the hang of it there are quite a few different things you can do, including the usual 'creative' mini-games (I always collect butterflies and chase chickens out of the corn on my horse... huh?), and a series of jumping courses over several levels of difficulty. It does get quite challenging after a while, which is good because I was concerned that this might be a simplistic game aimed mainly at children.

The movement of the horses is reasonably realistic (check out the video preview below.) No computer game has completely nailed it yet, but this is a pretty good attempt. I also like the fact that you don't have to press a button to make the horse take off over the jump, but instead you have to focus more on a nice straight approach to the fence and maintaining a good forward stride.

I'm not sure how this game would go with someone who isn't really keen about horses, but then again why would you buy this game if you weren't?

Do you wish horse games were more realistic?

I don't know about you, but when I play horse games I can't help but notice things that aren't quite true to reality... Sometimes the game is good enough to make me forget about that, and other times I find myself cringing as the horse canters around the corner to the next jump on the wrong lead!

Have you ever been playing a game and had something happen that looks so unrealistic that it kind of spoils the moment? I've seen horses looking so unbalanced that they would probably would fall over in real life... there's no way they could clear a jump!

Horsez Ranch Rescue

I've only just got this game on Wii, so I'll give it a thorough review once I've played it a bit more.

So far it seems pretty good! You get to steer the horse with the Wii remote and nunchuck, but in a slightly different way to My Horse and Me. The movement of the horse and rider isn't quite as realistic either, but Horsez might be better for people who like games with a story to them, rather than just a jumping competition simulator by itself.

You have to take care of the horse as part of the game by cleaning out its box (with a hose... not how we do it in Australia, but I'm sure they do it somewhere in the world...), and by washing, grooming and picking out the horses' hooves. If you don't take good care of your horse it will become uncooperative (well, that's what it says. Personally I like to take good care of my horses, whether they be real or virtual, so I haven't seen it for myself!)

Review to be continued as I progress! :-)

Links below are (from L to R) for Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS and Windows XP. Where is the version on Wii?? Sorry, but it doesn't seem to be on Amazon! If you're interested, perhaps you could try eBay.

On my wishlist - Lucinda Green's Equestrian Challenge

(Windows 98 / 2000 / Me / XP or PS2)

This game looks like it might be an updated version of the game "Equestriad 2001" that I used to play (see review below). You compete at Badminton, Burghley, Adelaide and Kentucky, which are the four highest level events in the world today (four star level).

There are 36 customer reviews on Amazon, and most of them give it 5 stars. I read all of the reviews, and the only negative ones were from someone who couldn't figure out how to play it because they didn't get a manual, and someone who didn't have a DVD drive in their computer to put the game in...

Looks like it's pretty cheap on eBay, so I might have to bid for a copy for the PS2!

The Saddle Club: Willowbrook Stables

(Windows 98 / Me / XP / 95)

This game is a few years old now, but it's worth mentioning because it's a pretty good game, and can still be found on the internet.

My teenage cousin had this game a few years ago and she loved it.

At the start you get to pick which character from The Saddle Club you want to be out of Lisa, Stevie and Carole. Then you take your horse with you for a holiday on an island. The story is that you have to solve the mystery to save Willowbrook Stables from developers, and you do this by riding around all over the place finding clues.

There are also fun mini-games within the overall game, and keen horselovers will also love just riding their horse around the place. I personally thought it was a nice touch that you have to groom and saddle up your horse before you can go out and ride.

Equestriad 2001 Review

This is first horse game I ever owned, and you can tell how old it is from the title!

You can still find this game for sale on the internet, but I'd probably only buy it for an older computer. From reading a review of the game on Amazon, apparently the audio repeats itself with Windows XP, so you'd have to play it with the volume down.

There are a few neat things about this game. Firstly, one of the voices doing the commentary is Lucinda Green, one of the legends of eventing. The second thing is that the scenery, and quite a number of the jumps are actually based on real jumps from the world famous courses that you ride in the game.

The courses in the game are Badminton, Burghley, Kentucky and Sydney. If you recognise those names then you'll know how great this game is for anyone who has ever dreamed of being a world class eventer! The Sydney course has many of the fences from the Olympics, and after playing the game it was a bit weird for me when I got to walk the course at the real life venue a few years later!

The third thing this game has going for it is that you get to pick from a number of world famous riders and horses. They've even paid attention to the fine details such as the horses' markings and the riders' cross country colours.

As you'd probably expect, the graphics aren't fantastic, and the movement of the horses is really quite unrealistic with the horses suddenly leaping up very high in the air each time you jump. There are also small things that bugged me, like the fact that the riders' stirrups were always way too long for jumping!

There are some amusing cheats, such as a ballistic rider who goes flying over the jump at great speed whenever you mess up your timing and the horse refuses, and one that makes the horse's head really big.

It was a good game for its time though, with the main downsides arising from the fact that it came out in 2001. If that doesn't bother you, and you have a computer that will run it, then I definitely recommend this game as being worth a play.

I was a horse crazy kid - but haven't been near a horse in a very long time.

I like the way you set out this lens and reviewed each product.

I always wanted a horse, but unfortunately it wasn't to be in my youth. I am looking to do it soon, though, in my old age.

I love a book called, "Everything Bad for You Is Good for You" where the author makes the scientific argument that modern TV and video games are stimulating to the brain and there for good for intelligence AND staving off dementia as we age.

Are these games stimulating to the brain besides just fun? If so I will have to add a link to this lens from mine. http://www.squidoo.com/Youngbrain

Let me know what you think!

Nice job! It's good to see stuff on horse games. :)
I have Lucinda Green's Equestrian Challenge; it's enjoyable, but in my opinion not quite as fun as Equestriad. It's similar, but not hard enough in areas and too hard - frustrating, even - in others (I played it on PS2). I also played the Rosemond Hills games a while ago - I enjoyed them (three years ago? more? my memory is a little foggy), but they will without a doubt show their age. There is also little variation between horses, and I remember the gray horses look positively green.
I am looking forwards to seeing how Horsez is. I was put off by the box design (and the name) myself.
A suggestion - "Saddle Up, Time to Ride." I think there are two versions? The one I played was entertaining, despite some VERY painful "creative" mini-games and a... "unique" plot. Even so, it's certainly worth a try - although I'm not sure how old it is and how hard it would be to find.
And seconding the Barbie suggestion. The game is surprisingly fun!

Thank you very much for your comment M-Girl! It's great to hear other people's reviews of horsey games. I'll be sure to check out the Barbie game, it's not one I would have thought of having on here.

Thanks to everyone else as well for your lovely comments :-)

I have the game: Lets Ride, silver buckle stables and it's not too bad, but it can get boring after a while because there isn't much to do once you have done all the competitions. A couple fetures i do like about this game is that you can do competitions mulplayer, you can ride your horse around in the hills, and you can have up to 4 costomised horses. One game that is not up here is Barbie Horse adventures: Wild Horse Rescue...yeah it sounds kind of dumb but it's kinda fun bacause you can take your horse on many different trails and sometimes catch horses. I hope this is useful information and I enjoyed looking at the differebt games

Agree that every girl has a horsey thing, funnily enough some men do as well. My brother had a stud and him and my dad lived for horse racing. Keep up the great work
