Multiplication for Horse Crazy Kids
But, alas, not every child shares my joy for math. In fact, as difficult as it may be to believe, many children are agitated, anxious, fearful, nervous, confused and dismayed by math. And, this math anxiety seems to peak in 3rd and 4th grade around the subject of memorizing the multiplication tables, and (gasp!) even worse, the dreaded Multiplication Word Problem!
Now all of that anxiety can be dispelled into the nether-world in favor of fun math - or rather - math about fun stuff like - HORSES! Yeeee-Ha! Let's get along little doggy!
How I Discovered This
I finally learned what worked for her - TALKING about something that was close to her HEART - her pets. So, we discussed how many cups of cat-food a day that all of her cats ate. Or, we lined up her stuffed animals to represent animals and discussed what their needs and activities were. It was amazing how quickly the answers came to her when we discussed something that was close to her heart.
Now, my almost-10-year-old daughter is at that same age. And, we're homeschooling. This daughter is more visual than verbal, so we draw lots of pictures. And, she LOVES HORSES. She rides, competes in horse shows, reads horse encyclopedias - you get the idea - a regular horse crazy 10 year-old girl.

Drawing Horse Pictures for Multiplication
Anyway, we had exhausted the explanation in the book, and the two explanations that my mind offered, and finally, I remembered (again) to use something that spoke to HER HEART - HORSES.
Well, we made 18 small (and quickly drawn) symbols for our 18 horses who each needed 12 bales of hay. And, we drew the 10 bales of hay like big boxes and the 2 bales of hay (thus making the "12" bales) as little boxes. Then I asked her to count the bales of hay. I told her to make sure that she didn't let any horses go hungry.
Guess what? Those horses got all 216 bales of hay that they needed. Not 36. Not 180. But the full 216. Then she counted all of those little pictures several different ways - counting by the big "10s" bales, then the little "2s" bales; counting 1-by-1; counting by "12s". And, we did the number manipulation. And, we matched the number manipulation with the pictures and then - VOILA - the multiplication concept lightbulb was lighted and there was no stopping her!
The Moral
Use these 70 Multiplication Word Problems about Horses, and watch your child learn multiplication and word problems concepts QUICKLY and JOYFULLY!
These Multiplication Word Problems
Last year, I had already anticipated that this day would come. I started drafting lots of horse related multiplication word problems.
So, I thought, why not share them with you?!!
Below are 70 multiplication word problems for you to use with your horse-crazy children, or to give your horse-crazy children extra practice. I've divided them into the multiplication times tables groupings (with 2 & 3's together, and with 5 & 10's together). Read them, absorb them, discuss them - or just COPY & PASTE them. At the bottom is the entire compilation, un-numbered (but still categorized) for easy COPY & PASTING.
Then, you can paste it onto a word document, save it, reformat it, print it out - even add some other problems (maybe some addition or subtraction) - and even tweak some of the numbers each week so that you can have an endless supply of Horse Crazy Multiplication Word Problem practice for your horse-crazy children!
One last thing - I've listed the Answers at the bottom of the page (also in a Copy & Paste-friendly format). (I put them there just to make it easier for you, not that you forgot your Times Tables or anything!)
The Answers
to all of these
multiplication word problems
are in a neat list
at the bottom.

The Best Multiplication Memorization Manipulatives that I have found!
If you are trying to help your child learn and/or memorize the times tables, don't have your child do all of these wrap-ups every night. Pick one times table (say the "4's") each week and have your child do just the 4's key that week. But, have your child do it 5 or 10's in a row (at homework time, or after dinner), each night. Your child will be amazed at his/her own MASTERY of the times table by the end of the week!

These Wrap-Ups (and we've used - and continue to revisit for refresher - the Addition & Subtraction Wrap-Ups) are a key component of our Memorizing the Multiplication Tables system. We are at the point where we especially like timing how quickly they can be "Wrapped!" BTW, did you know that they have States & Capitals Wrap-Ups?

Yahtzee is the Best Multiplication Game Going!
Yahtzee not only lets your child practice up to 6 x 6, but also, lets your child practice addition all throughout the game too! And, Yahtzee provides a continual reference point for future explanation to your child when he/she runs into a word problem that he/she doesn't understand. [As in, "Okay, let's say you rolled 5 dice and each one had a 6 on it, what would that be?"]
Translating complex-sounding word problems into simple scenarios is a key strategy to word problems. Now, you'll always be able to use the Yahtzee scenario strategy!

5 dice, a chart, and a pencil. What more does a person need to be happy in life (except, well, maybe, Scrabble would be a nice compliment)?! The beauty of Yahtzee is that it's not all luck - the strategy is in choosing which category to place your roll into - that's what levels the playing field between the parents and the children.

8 x 7 is . . .
(Quick! - and no, you can't use the calculator!)
How well did you memorize your multiplication times tables in 4th grade?
Personally, I think 8 x 7 is the least memorized (a.k.a. most difficult to memorize) times table equation. Why? I think it's because it falls "in the middle somewhere" and the 6, 7, & 8's are the tough tables anyways, and the 50's are filled with soooo many multiplication times tables answers.

Multiplication Flash Cards
I've also noticed that it REALLY matters to kids how COLORFUL the flashcards are. The more color, the more "adventuresome" the decoration on the card, the more joyful the kids are in using them! So, get COOL flashcards.
Want another hint? Sort out the flashcards into separate times tables. Have your child do one set of times tables at a time (say, only the "3's"). Get the child to master one times table before moving on to mastering the next one.
