The Basics of Horse Groundwork

Why do we teach our horse groundwork?
Horse groundwork is often overlooked. Doing groundwork with your horse opens the lines of communication. You as the handler develop your own "horse sense" as you learn to watch your horse closely for changes in their body language and manner. The horse learns their boundaries and will develop a respect for you as their handler, the leader of the herd.
Groundwork promotes cooperation, trust and respect. It helps to ensure that you are safe whilst handling the horse. Groundwork is the foundation of a good riding relationship between you and your horse.

What is horse groundwork
Horse groundwork is a set of structured exercises on the ground. They can be carried out in a round yard or arena / general riding area. The exercises include close in work, halter training, long-lining and lungeing. Groundwork is an ongoing process that should be repeated throughout the relationship with you and your horse.Ideally, before each ride, some time should be spent doing a few exercises, just to remind the horse who is in charge. The horse is a herd animal and looks to a leader for protection. In the herd this is the stallion and lead mare. Horse groundwork allows the handler to become the leader in a gentle and respectful manner, leading to what will hopefully be a long and happy relationship.
Horse groundwork to solve problems
There is nothing more frustrating than having a spooking horse, a nervous horse, a horse that is hard to catch or you are a nervous rider. There is also nothing worse than a pushy or dominant horse. They are very big animals that could become dangerous if they become too pushy around humans.Horse groundwork can help to solve these problems as well as promote confidence in yourself as the handler of the horse. Groundwork is also very good in fixing trailer loading problems. My own horse was a scrambler in the trailer and with good basic groundwork and patience, we worked her through her "small spaces" problems. Groundwork - repeat, repeat, repeat
Groundwork needs to be repetitive. A horse may require up to 60 repetitions of a new exercise in order for it to "sink in". Patience and gentle handing in the key. However, remember to maintain the fun. Horses enjoy mental stimulation and appreciate variety. Intelligent and especially young horses will get bored very easily, so have a few different exercises up your sleeve and don't be afraid to introduce a new one every now and again. And remember to reward your horse for their achievement and good behavior. Every horse has their favorite place for a scratch and don't forget their favorite treat after a session of groundwork!
