Horse Hair Pottery, by Richard Martin, Potter
This image is of a pot I purchased from him - the design is created during the process, and is actually carbonized horse hair. I was very intrigued by these designs, and had to ask many questions to satisfy my curiosity. If this piques your interest, keep reading and I'll tell you everything he told me!
Richard Martin, Potter
How He Does It

First he "throws the pots" (meaning he shapes them with his hands and/or other pottery tools) on a potter's wheel, upon which the clay resides and rotates.
Each pot must be hand trimmed of excess clay, and then hard burnished with a stone until the desired smooth, polished surface is attained.
The pots are then bisque fired. During the next firing, he removes the pots at "red heat" (around 1600 degrees F.) and then applies the horse hairs by hand. The horse hair burns, leaving a distinctive impression which is bonded onto the smooth surface of the pot. This results in each pot having a unique and unduplicatable pattern of carbon lines, making them one-of-a-kind collectibles.

- Excellent review of horse-hair-pottery as well as Mr. Martin's other lovely art pieces. Thank you for sharing. The idea of using horse-hair as a decorative item would never have entered my mind. That's probably why I will never be a great artist. LOL

- Wow..this is some of the most beautiful pottery I have seen. I love pottery for so many reasons and have several pieces from a local artist here in Georgia. The pattern I have is the Southwestern Sun (I believe that is what it is called) it's so beautiful!! Love, Richard's pottery!!

- My husband and I have three of these pots. We absolutely LOVE them! We bought them at a festival in Richardson, Texas. I wonder if it's the same guy? Have you ever heard of anyone else that does it? (I don't remember what the people that sold them to us looked like, I'll bet my hubby does. I'll show him your lens!!)

- Interesting pottery and beautiful too. Your first sentence was spot on for me "When you hear the words "horse hair" and "pottery" together, you might wonder how they could possibly go together." I like the new format for our bios, as seeing this intro is what brought me here :)

- I love beautiful pottery and had never seen this technique. Very interesting and very pretty. Rob Gentry is a well known potter here in Pendleton SC and I will have to share this page with him. Richard Martin's Horse Hair Pottery is very unique. Blessed by a Squid Angel. Lensrolling to Pendleton Antiques where one of the Antique Dealers explains about the old Edgefield Pottery.
