Our favourites

Now that I have young children who love stories and animals I find myself loving my old favourites still.

Bambi was the first show I remember; "MAN has come to the forest" was the first time I wondered about man's effect on nature. Beautiful Joe was the first book I remember where man could be so cruel. And then there was Black Beauty, Misty and then the Black Stallion. I also found both Flicka and National Velvet to be inspiring.

Black Beauty

from Wikopedia

Black Beauty (in full: Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse, first published November 24th 1877) is Anna Sewell's first and only novel, composed in the last years of her life between 1871 and 1877 while confined to her house as an invalid.

The book became an immediate best-seller, with Anna living just long enough (five months) to see her first and only novel become a success. Anna said of her purpose in writing "its special aim being to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses"... Her sympathetic portrayal of the plight of working animals led to a vast outpouring of concern for animal welfare and is said to have been instrumental in abolishing the cruel practice of using the checkrein (or "bearing rein", a strap used to keep horses' heads high, fashionable in Victorian England but painful and damaging to a horse's neck).

Misty of Chincoteague

from Wikipedia

Misty of Chincoteague is the title of a 1947 book by Marguerite Henry, based on the life of a real pony named Misty, native to Virginia's coastal island of Chincoteague on the Delmarva Peninsula.

The story is based upon "The Pony penning", which is an annual event that involves rounding up some of the wild ponies who live on nearby Assateague Island for auction as a benefit for the local Fire Department. It features the Beebe family, including a young brother and sister who capture an elusive mare on Assateague named the Phantom along with her foal, Misty.

Chincoteague Ponies

About the breed

Because the Chincoteague Pony is a hybrid whose breeding program is largely left to natural selection, conformational traits may vary among individuals. Most ponies tend to resemble the Welsh or Arabian breeds, although Mustang blood is obvious in others. The head is expressive, with broad forehead; large, soft eyes, straight or slightly dished short face; firm muzzle; small, wide-set, tipped-in ears; tapered muzzle, large nostrils and rounded jowls. The body is clean with a, moderately refined throat latch and neck; well-angulated shoulder; broad chest and loins; short back; deep flanks; well-sprung ribs; round croup; straight, sound legs with dense bone and an appearance of overall hardiness; round, hard hooves; adequate mane and tail. The Chincoteague Pony can be found in all common colors, with many pintos among them.
