Welcome to my lense on Horse types for kids of all ages.

There are horse or pony types that are not specific breeds, but which do have specific characteristics. A TYPE is a horse that is suitable for a specific job, but which can actually be from any breed. For example a Hunter can be any breed of horse that hunts.

The Cob

Welsh Pony    source: WikipediaThe Cob - the Cobs characteristics are that there a sturdy and solid build and they are a great weight carrier, built for stamina rather than speed.

There are two breeds of Cob, the Welsh Cob and the Norman Cob. The Welsh Cob was known about as far back as the 16th Century. Today the Cob is often seen competing in many equestrian events such as showing, jumping and driving. The Norman Cob is descended from small horses called Bidets that lived in Brittany during the time of the Roman Empire.

The smaller Cob is often a popular children's choice.

The Hack

Hack Horse     source: WikipediaThe Hack is considered to be the most majestic of horses with an excellent character.

Most Hacks are actually thoroughbreds, or thoroughbreds crossed with Arabs. They are usually between 14.2 hands high (hh) and 15.3 hh. The Hack can be any solid colour.

The Hack must show excellent self-carriage.

The Hunter

Hunter Horse     source: WikipediaThe Hunter should be strong and sturdy with powerful hindquarters. They should have a long neck to allow a good length of rein and be speedy.

The Hunter needs to be athletic and bold. Show Hunters are required to jump a course of fences. They should have long and sweeping stride to enable them to cover ground with minimal effort.

The Polo Pony

Polo Pony               source: WikipediaThe Polo Pony needs a mixture of speed, courage, stamina, agility and balance.

The Polo Pony averages about 15.1 hands high which is actually higher than the definition of Pony would allow. However, the term Pony in this case refers to their agility.

The Pony

Pony                     source: WikipediaThe Pony - the Pony should be under 14.2 hands high. Anything above this height and it is a horse.

The Pony has a stocky body, dense bone and round shape.

A very adaptive animal that has worked with man throughout our history, from pulling Roman chariots to going to war, to working in mines.
