Horseback Riding Tip: Keep your Cool!

One of the best horseback riding tips is: Always keep your cool. If you lose control of yourself, have no doubt you will lose control of your horse. A horse can sense if the rider is scared. Even if you are scared (most beginning riders are) and you have no idea how you'll ever stay on the horse, you cannot think that around your horse. You need to stay calm & relaxed (Hint: Fake it till you make it!) If you get a little scared, take a few deep breaths so that you can slow your heartbeat and relax yourself. Odds are, if you think you're in control, so will the horse. Here's some more horseback riding tips that will save you tons of time!

Horseback Riding Tips - When Training, Patience is Key

If you have ever had the pleasure of riding a well-trained horse, you know that joy.

A horse though, is not trained in a day. It takes time, patience and consistency. When you are attempting to train a horse, allow your patience to overcome the horse's persistence. If you are patient, you will win the battle every time. If you lose your patience, you have lost and will get nowhere. Getting angry or frustrated will only compound your problems. Anger has no place in horse training or handling. Yelling, hitting, or kicking will only teach your horse to fear you.
There's no replacement or substitution for patience. Sorry, there's just no way around it. If you're looking for a shortcut, well you're just setting yourself up for failure down the road. A horse, just like a human needs some repetition to learn. And, as all people, some horses need more repetition than others.

I am helping a older farmer out with his horses. there are four of them and one is a male horse. 2 of them just came to the farm 2 month ago in the age of 31/2 and 5 years old. I take care of the cleaning, feeding, trats and letting them out of the stables. I am working with them to trust me becouse they are very shy towards me. They all have been riding horses where they came from and the one he has for 11 years now was also a riding horse and now you cant do anything with them but putting them on the leadleash and then they get shy and buck or fight you. Sorry for my spelling, I am from germany and still learning. I used to train cleidesdail in germany and never came to a problem like this, the sudden change now and the 3 1/2 year old starts now charching me when letting her out of the stable or me going in to the pasture. I need help, I feel like a failure. One day they are fine, the next day they are bad and act as if they have not learned anything. PleaSE HELP.

Sara, Good suggestions, I have always been amazed at the responses from horses when they sense the rider is insecure. Also I love to see a rider on a horse that really is sensitive to the needs of the rider. I truly believe horses get a good sense of us before we even mount them. Keep up the good advice. www.4trailtips.com
