The Book

The Horse Boy, by Rupert Isaacson

When his son Rowan was diagnosed with autism, Rupert Isaacson was devastated, afraid he might never be able to communicate with his child. But when Isaacson, a lifelong horseman, rode their neighbor's horse with Rowan, Rowan improved immeasurably. He was struck with a crazy idea: why not take Rowan to Mongolia, the one place in the world where horses and shamanic healing intersected?

THE HORSE BOY is the dramatic and heartwarming story of that impossible adventure. In Mongolia, the family found undreamed of landscapes and people, unbearable setbacks, and advances beyond their wildest dreams. This is a deeply moving, truly one-of-a-kind story--of a family willing to go to the ends of the earth to help their son, and of a boy learning to connect with the world for the first time.

The Documentary- The Horse Boy Movie

(Formerly titled Over the Hills and Far Away) a film by Michael Orion Scott and Rupert Isaacson

The Horse Boy does more than chronicle Rowan and his family's journey across this vast, wild landscape. It delves into the strange world of autism itself, the relationship between humans and animals, between different cultures, different ways of being (autistic versus normal, or 'neuro-typical'), and the nature of healing. We hear the varied theories on autism from the experts in the field, well-known researchers of autism such as Dr Simon Baron-Cohen of Cambridge University, Dr Temple Grandin, recovered autist and professor of animal behaviour at Colorado State University, and Anthropologist and researcher Roy Richard Grinker of the George Washington University. But above all, The Horse Boy tells the story of a family that goes to the end of the earth to find a way into their son's life.

I bought the book on Sunday and finished on Tuesday. I have no children and have never met an autistic child, but the book is a powerful read for anyone who is interested in how the mind works - not just human minds but animal minds as well. Isaacson does an excellent job of describing the impact Rowan's behaviour has on others including animals. The book is well reasoned and Isaacson does not pretend to have all the answers. In fact he does not profess to have any of the answers but he sets the story and the information out in such a way that the reader can form their own opinion and apply what is said to his or her situation. I believe this book is a useful read for any parent and anyone who has charge of animal welfare in any of its various forms.

You may or may not believe in shamans. It absolutely does not matter. What does matter is what happens next. It also matters how well instructions are followed and how important an open mind can be when faced with the unknown.

Most books have only one climacitc moment. But this book has several because real life does not happen according to a script.

Finally, this book is a challenge to those who think they are "normal". That is because to get the most out of this book you need to be able to empathize not just with Rowan, his father or his mother, you have to be able to empathize with all of those people and animals who were impacted by Rowan's personality.

There are a lot of heroes in this book and no real villains. That in itself is noteworthy. This is a book that should make the medical community sit up and take a hard look at how they do business; not just with autistic patients, but with "normal" patients as well.
