- I bought the book on Sunday and finished on Tuesday. I have no children and have never met an autistic child, but the book is a powerful read for anyone who is interested in how the mind works - not just human minds but animal minds as well. Isaacson does an excellent job of describing the impact Rowan's behaviour has on others including animals. The book is well reasoned and Isaacson does not pretend to have all the answers. In fact he does not profess to have any of the answers but he sets the story and the information out in such a way that the reader can form their own opinion and apply what is said to his or her situation. I believe this book is a useful read for any parent and anyone who has charge of animal welfare in any of its various forms.
You may or may not believe in shamans. It absolutely does not matter. What does matter is what happens next. It also matters how well instructions are followed and how important an open mind can be when faced with the unknown.
Most books have only one climacitc moment. But this book has several because real life does not happen according to a script.
Finally, this book is a challenge to those who think they are "normal". That is because to get the most out of this book you need to be able to empathize not just with Rowan, his father or his mother, you have to be able to empathize with all of those people and animals who were impacted by Rowan's personality.
There are a lot of heroes in this book and no real villains. That in itself is noteworthy. This is a book that should make the medical community sit up and take a hard look at how they do business; not just with autistic patients, but with "normal" patients as well.

- Rupert, congratulations on your work and efforts, on all fronts. I believe there is compelling evidence for a link between autism and gluten intolerance. I don't know whether this is the case, but if autism has spiked by 600% in Austin in the past years, the cause must be environmental. Something you are eating, breathing, or drinking is causing it. Fortunately, you have an person right in Austin who is a specialist on autism and should be able to help you with this. Maybe you already know her. Her name is Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo (www.drritamarie.com). Please look her up. It's not normal to be sick and you do not have to live with this problem. I hope I read in the press about how your little boy got better. Good luck!

- Mr. Isaacson, has anyone considered that Rowan may have improved while in Mongolia because he was not drinking fluoridated water or getting bromine from flour? I realize this may be a long shot but one which might be worth pursuing. We really don't know what these toxic hallides might do to disrupt iodine and thyroid function. We do know in the past mental impairment was caused by lack of iodine. I know autism is not the same thing as low IQ, but still there might be some connection. Autism in countries that do not fluoridate their water is much lower I write this at the risk of sounding like a nut case, but perhaps worth the risk, since you don't know me anyway.

- I've just read about the movie in the Daily Telegraph, and can't wait to see it. I volunteer for the Riding for the Disabled here in South Africa, and Thursdays are for our autistic group. It's amazing to see how riding can help so many of the children 'organise' their minds. They go down to the arena totally chaotic and unruly, come back calm, happy and communicative. We also deal with cerebal palsied children, but the autistic children are my special interest.
I also believe this little boy was very blessed to have such special parents!

- Hi I am an Aussie and a horse person and i have just read the Book, I couldn't put it down. I have a friend with a down syndrome child and i have always know when he is around my horses they are very submissive and careful around him, just as Rupert said they lick and chew and drop there head. Amazing animals if we all just listened to them more.
What fantastic parents you both are.
Good Luck for the years ahead.

When you said that once your son was diagnosed you went thru a grieving process I knew just what you meant. I will read your book and look out for the programme. I'm not very good at explaining how challenging my familys life is but hearing you speak was dot on the mark.
God bless you all.

My friend Allen Pogue told me today about you and your son (we own the Lusitano sires of his horses). I am a horse trainer (originated the endotapping procedure), trained long ago in Portugal for years. My son is autistic also and we had some great success about his communication skill with the endotapping. Love to talk to you about that. Our site is www.baroquefarmsusa.com. give us a call _JP

- I think thst Autism is a very amazing thing to have. One of the reasons I was born with PDD Autism is because My dads and moms family had memebers with Autism. I do not reget having Autism. There are things that I might be slower at or things that i might not understand things better then others.
