Choosing The Correct Horse Clippers

Choosing the correct horse clippers depends primarily on the type of clipping you will do. Because horse clippers can be expensive, most horse owners are tempted to look for cheaper models. This is fine if you are only going to do minimal clipping. However, most basic clippers will not be sufficient to do a whole body clip, or to clip more than one horse per session. Cheaper models simply will not hold up under this type of use.

Basic horse clippers can handle small clip jobs, such as trimming the bridle path, clipping the whiskers and muzzle to keep it neat looking, clipping the excess hair on the fetlocks, and making a clean line around the coronet. However, basic models will quickly burn out if used for full body clips. Most are not designed to hold up for frequent trace clips, hunter clips or blanket clips. To clip larger areas of the horse, you will need more powerful clippers that are designed for the job.

Clipping large areas of the horse also requires clippers that are lighter and easier to hold. When the shape of the clip is visible, such as a trace clip, quality clippers provide much more precision. They also run quieter and with less vibration, making it easier to clip sensitive areas on a clipper-shy horse.
