'Give a horse what he needs and he will give you his heart in return'

Last Angel Equine Defence~Somerset UK
We are currently rehoming unwanted and neglected horses and ponies by placing them with foster carers and long-term homes where possible. We are fund-raising for more suitable premises: land and stables to be able to rehabilitate and re-home more horses and ponies. We need donations to do this. All funds raised through this lens will go towards saving abused horses and ponies, not just in Somerset but all over the UK. Please give generously.

Angels Among Us

Every Horse Is An Angel

The pony in this picture was rescued. He was due to go to a slaughterhouse. Why? Because he was expensive to keep? Because he was so badly treated that he was afraid of people, and therefore was labelled 'difficult to handle'? Because he wasn't considered a potentially 'good' riding pony? None of these reasons justify the grim and cruel fate he faced, at the tender age of 3 years old! If horses are given a chance, rather than discarded just because they don't immediately do what 'we want them to do' they then have a chance to become contented, loving, joyous, giving, and with time and trust established between horse and human, they will provide us with one of the most beautiful friendships we will ever know.

The pictures below show Alfie's before and after pictures. The 'before' picture was actually taken a few weeks after he first arrived with us, and at that point, he had put on a little weight, so you can imagine how bad he was at first! The 'after' picture is a happy healthy Alfie....as it should be!

Update on Alfie October 2007 ~ four years after rescue

The effect of bad horse dealers on young horses

Little Alfie has been busy for the past 6 weeks. He was 'started' ('broken in' in old-fashioned horse speak, but we don't want to use that!) before, about 18 months ago, we did some work with him then, but decided to leave it for a later date, to give him some time to have been introduced to it, but he didn't seem ready. And the key with Alfie is to do things very slowly, with no pressure!

So, six weeks ago, I recruited the help of an excellent instructor, and we set about teaching Alfie how to be riding pony. Do I have to? is the question you get the feeling Alfie would ask if he could talk!

The first 3 weeks went well, with Alfie really taking to the process, BUT, there has always been a problem when first getting on him. We know there is nothing wrong with his back, or any other medical problem, so we wondered if he may just be cold-backed (some horses just are, and they don't like it when a rider first gets on them, but ok once you are on) but it just seemed as though there was more to it than that.

We carried on, but tried different approaches to see if the problem would sort itself out. Nothing we did seemed to make a difference and the problem continued. Eventually though, (and I expect Alfie was completely fed up with us for not figuring it out before) we finally realised that Alfie's problem was with working in the arena.

As soon as we took him out on the lanes and on bridlepaths, he suddenly totally relaxed and became a completely different pony, happy, relaxed and thoroughly enjoying himself.

My instructor, who is very experienced thinks that the person who I got Alfie from, the evil horse dealer I mentioned before (you know, the one who's in prison for indecency to minors?!) had tried to start him before. But had done it in a way that was cruel, therefore leaving Alfie with a very negative association about being ridden. We both agree that it is SO easy to ruin a wonderful pony in this way, and make it impossible for a pony to have a secure future, UNLESS they are lucky enough to be found by someone who is prepared to work through the problems they have. Hence why so many go to slaughter every year.

It is a very sad fact, but one that is all too familiar. Alfie is just one more pony that has more than likely been put through totally unecessary and cruel methods of being started, and they are employed as a way of making the process quick, so that a dealer can sell the pony as quickly as possible and then just keep buying more and more and do the same thing again and again.

Don't buy a horse from a dealer! (UNLESS, you know without a doubt that the dealer is reputable and has the animals interests at heart)... And if you have a young horse or pony that is having problems being started, please please give the animal some time, and understanding. your horse or pony may be trying to tell you something....

Praying for Land!

This is the land and stables we want to buy for rescued horses-can you help?

A suitable parcel of land with stable block has come onto the market for sale.
This would be a wonderful place for Last Angel Equine Defence, in order for us to help some of the many abused, abandoned and neglected horses in need of rescue and rehabilitation.

Please help us to buy this land! As I've said before, I have some money that my lovely mother (who so sadly passed away in April this year) left me, and she knew this was my dream, this is what she would want me to spend the money on. But I do not have enough to buy somewhere suitable such as this land.

Details:
An excellent purpose built stable barn comprising eight stables with hay store and tack room with concrete yard area adjoining. Situated in a secluded location enjoying good access with paddock areas adjoining. In total extending to 9.17 acres (3.71 ha) estimated.

The great thing about this land is that it already has an established stable block, hay storage and tack room. So there would be no worries about planning permission to build stables. It is also in a secluded area, which is a definite plus for rescued horses!

We are in the process of registering Last Angel Equine Defence as a charity via the Charity Commission here in the UK, but it takes a long time! This land is for sale now!!

We are also staging a concert to raise money for Last Angel....details soon!

Please help us! Every penny would help right now!!

The most gentle, compassionate and beautiful person I have ever known. She shared her love of animals and nature with me when I was a child, and because of her, I was given the opportunity to have my own pony at a young age...every little girl's dream! Our song, Last Angel, was written for her, and Last Angel horse and pony sanctuary is dedicated to her. She supported me wholeheartedley when I rescued my ponies...when everyone said 'you're crazy! It will never work', my mum said 'listen to your heart'.

Bless you mum.

'This is book about a woman who, emotionally and physically abused as a child, acquired an old, abused horse that taught her many of life's most important lessons. It is a good book for a younger reader: teens and young adults. Although the writer is able to adequately convey the insights into her own psyche that this experience gave to her'

Horse Slaughter in the UK

weekly slaughter in southwest UK

In October 2006, an undercover Observer reporter discovered that every Wednesday, Stephen Potter [of Lawrence J. Potter] slaughters horses at Stillmans abattoir, which is on the of the only two abattoirs in the uk to slaughter horses. This abattoir is located in Staplegrove, Taunton.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affaris estimates that between 6,000 and 10,000 horses are slaughtered every year in Britain for horsemeat.

This means that on average between 50 - 100 horses are being killed weekly at stillmans for consumption abroad.

The shame of British Horse Racing

The Cruelty behind the British Horseracing Industry

'....Most people regard horse racing as a harmless sport in which the animals are willing participants who thoroughly enjoy the thrill. The truth is that, behind the scenes, lies a story of immense suffering.

Approximately 15,000 foals are born into the closely-related British and Irish racing industries each year, yet only a third go on to become racers. Those horses who do not make the grade may be slaughtered for meat or repeatedly change hands in a downward spiral of neglect. Of those horses who do go on to race, around 375 are raced to death every year.

Beneath its glamorous façade, commercial horse racing is a ruthless industry motivated by financial gain and prestige. Cruelty? You can bet on it!'

Animal Aid Campaigns Horse Racing

Animal Aid's Race Horse Death Watch was launched just before the 2007 Grand National. Its purpose is to expose and record every on-course thoroughbred fatality in the UK.

The horse racing authorities have resolutely failed to put horse death information into the public domain, preferring to dismiss equine fatalities as 'accidental' and 'unexplained'. Even when several horses die at a single meeting, the term 'statistical blip' is often deployed.

Animal Aid has produced a series of revealing reports over the last seven years exposing the welfare problems associated with Thoroughbred breeding, racing, training and disposal of commercially 'unproductive' horses. Our research indicates that an average of 375 horses are raced to death every year. One-third die on racecourses, while the others are destroyed as a result of training injuries, or are killed because they are no longer commercially viable.

A Dead Cert

The racing industry's horrific experiments on horses

Animal Aid report 'A Dead Cert'

Over the last seven years, Animal Aid has produced a series of detailed reports exposing the major welfare problems associated with Thoroughbred breeding, racing, training and the disposal of commercially 'unproductive' horses.

Animals are highly in-bred for speed at the expense of skeletal strength and general robustness. Two-thirds of the 16,000 foals produced for racing every year are deemed unsuitable. Some go into other equestrian events but as many as 2,000 are sent for slaughter.

Horse cruelty and the pharmaceutical industry

Premarin

Premarin, what is it?

Premarin® stands for Pregnant Mares' Urine (PREgnant MARes' urINe); PMU for short .

The company that distributes and markets Premarin world-wide, Ayerst Organics Ltd. (the world's only producer of PMU) is a subsidiary of Wyeth Inc. (Wyeth Laboratories, Inc. traces its roots to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., where, in 1860, John Wyeth and his brother Frank established a drugstore). Wyeth Inc. is the world's eight largest drug maker (2003), falling from the seventh position it had held for many years.

'...To produce Premarin, an estimated 35,000 mares are forced to stand in barns throughout Canada and parts of the Midwestern United States for about six months out of every year with urine collection devices strapped onto them.Even by the self-serving standards of corporations, Wyeth-Ayerst's suggested (but not mandated) 4 1/2-foot wide stalls for pregnant draft horses weighing up to 1700 are ungenerous. The stalls are deliberately kept narrow to prevent pregnant mares from turning or lying down with their legs stretched out for fear the collection cups will become detached as the urine is "harvested." And, worse yet, many of these mares get little or no exercise for the six months they are forced to stand in the barns. (The most recent "voluntary" Code of Practice for the industry states that the mares only be exercised on an as-needed basis.) their reward is the auctions and a likely trip to the slaughterhouse.'

'...PMU farmers and Wyeth-Ayerst would like us to believe that the estimated 35,000 foals resulting from these pregnancies are sold as companion animals. A very few may be and a few more fillies are allowed to grow up and replace their worn-out mothers. However, most, especially the male colts, are weaned too early, taken to auction where they're sold by the pound to killer-buyers, fattened in feed lots and then sent straight to slaughter. There, these sensitive, highly social young animals are made to wait their turn for death. And for what? So that Wyeth-Ayerst can sell their animal-based hormone replacement therapy (HRT) Premarin when there is plant-based HRT available. And so that restaurants in France and Japan can serve foal steaks to connoisseurs of cruelty! (Foal steak sells for up to $15 a pound in some Paris butchers)

Horsey jargon glossary for the non-horse person

What does it all mean?!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

You may have heard 'horsey' people saying the most peculiar sounding things! Here are some of them and what they mean...

'My horse is bombproof' This doesn't mean 'my horse doesn't blow up spontaneously', it actually means, 'my horse doesn't run away with me while I'm on his/her back, while I have no hope in hell of stopping him/her.

'My horse is a good doer' This doesn't mean my horse has regular, normal bowel movements.. This means (believe it or not) that this person's horse finds it relatively easy to keep weight on and stay in good condition without resorting to endless special diet plans.

'My horse won't hack alone' Doesn't mean 'my horse won't hack into a computer by himself' and it doesn't mean 'my horse can't hack life on his own' it means he won't go out on a ride unless accompanied by another horse and rider

'My horse is a schoolmaster/schoolmistress' (Who made these words up! I'm horsey but even I have problems with this one!) It doesn't mean the obvious, but at the same time it does. It conjours up images of a proudly smiling horse on graduation day! but it actually means 'my horse knows how to BE a horse in the human sense of the word, ie he knows everything he needs to know about riders and he will teach you the right way, when you do things wrong! Plus he will never blow up spontaneously :)

'My horse is spooky' Doesn't mean this person's horse is weird, or ghoulish in any way. What this actually means is this horse jumps a mile at the slightest thing, ie plastic bags, noises in hedges, the wind etc 'spooks easily'
