Riding Lessons & Clinics

We look forward to meeting you and helping you learn more about horses, their care and how to ride. We have been riding and training Gaited horses for almost 20 years.  Natural horsemanship works great with all breeds of horses, especially those smooth moving gaited horses. Using a blend of training methods, you will learn how to care for a horse from the ground up. You will learn about conformation of the horse, how to properly fit a saddle and tack-up a horse. And then, best of all, you will learn to ride!  We have a couple of miniature horses that also love to be brushed and handled, so depending on your age and skill level, you might get to start with them. And progress to a larger horse. We have 2 main horses that we use for lessons. One is a smaller, black mare, named Cuddles. She is 17yrs old and has taught a number of people to ride. Cuddles is a Kentucky Mtn. Saddle horse and has a wonderful smooth 4-beat gait. The other is Cherish, a larger red chocolate mare. She is 8 years old, and has a wonderful personality. Cherish is 1/2 Rocky Mtn. horse and 1/2 Quarter horse. All her gaits a smooth and she will do a 4-beat gait as well.   The goal we have, for each rider that we work with, is that there will be a connection between horse and rider, and an enjoyable time for both horse and rider.

Horse's Body Language

"Read" Your Horse

1. Ears laid back - means the horse is very annoyed. If the ears are laid back flat the horse could even charge. Push the horse harder around the round pen focusing your eyes on his inside hip, and then relax the pressure. If he goes into this posture again, repeat. Each time you put pressure on him for doing this, he should begin to change his attitude, more each time.

2. Head shaking - considered the same as #1, only milder. Approach it the same way.

3. Tail tight against the buttocks - means he is not relaxed. As you work with him in the round pen, you will see the tail move further out and relax, more and more.

4. Head begins to drop and lip smacking - means the horse is relaxing and accepting what you are asking. Reward with lots of rubbing and praise.

5. There are many more signs to watch for. The more you observe the horse the more you will notice the different signs. Watch the ears. Where are they directed? What questions is he asking? Are you giving him the right answers?

Most Everything I know about people I learn from HORSES!

HorseSense HorseManShipMost Everything I know about people I learned from Horses.
The more I work with horses and people the more I learn about each. This is the Second in a series of articles I would like to write about some of the things we teach to help in our relationship with our horses, as well as with each other and what we can learn from our creator.
We use 4 keywords in our teaching: Confidence, Consistency, Compassion and Connection.
Compassion I believe is an important part of our relationship with our horses. We could also call it insight, patience, generosity or an understanding, of what is going on in the horses head. We learn it by observation and listening to the questions that the horse is asking or the messages that his body language and eyes are telling us. This skill is more natural for some than others.
It's like the ancient Greek story about that mean tempered, irritable, and dangerous horse, Bucephalus. All who attempted to ride Bucephalus quickly found themselves sitting on the ground. Then one day Alexander the Great studied the great horse's habits and discovered why he was so hard to get near. Bucephalus was afraid of his own shadow. Knowing that, Alexander mounted, and rode him straight in the direction of the sun. With his shadow behind him, out of sight, Bucephalus lost his fear, and Alexander broke him to the saddle. And that's how Alexander the Great made one more conquest, over another's fear.
If we would take our time to study the horses habits we would better control our emotions and mind to work with our horses. The difficult horse has more things to study and takes more time to have compassion and understanding.
Most of the people who make your life difficult are themselves scarred by fears and pains that you may never know about, and even they may never fully understand and conquer. But you don't have to let your life be controlled by their failures and limitations any more than by your own. You can find the courage to turn the other cheek, to live the transformed life, to learn to manage all the inner controls at your command.
Think of yourself as having a "control center" inside your brain, just like the controls that an airplane fighter pilot sees before him. There are all these buttons and levers and gauges around you, and one of these is an ejection seat button for use in emergencies. Now some people apparently operate their control centers as if they only knew how to operate this one button. I mean, every situation is an emergency bailout! Gone is the freedom, the flexibility, and the power that comes from knowing how to operate all the controls at your command.
Perhaps this picture can give us a better way of seeing what is meant by the directive to "have the mind of Christ." Now here is someone who could certainly stay in touch with all the possibilities at His command. You don't ever see Him grabbing for the ejection button, no matter what the crisis, no matter what the threat.
No, Jesus exerted control in an entirely new way. If an enemy compels you to go with him one mile, he says, go with him two. That way, you're still in control. If someone strikes you on one cheek, you don't give in and let that one person make the choice of weapons; you turn the other cheek, and refuse to play his game, and you stay in control. The other person's behavior doesn't have to dictate your behavior.
So now we don't have to play out life as the victim. We don't have to go around picking fights or running away from them. We can be "strong in the strength which God supplies."
Here is what Jesus said in Luke 6:31-37 (The Message)
31-34"Here is a simple rule of thumb for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you; then grab the initiative and do it for them! If you only love the lovable, do you expect a pat on the back? Run-of-the-mill sinners do that. If you only help those who help you, do you expect a medal? Garden-variety sinners do that. If you only give for what you hope to get out of it, do you think that's charity? The stingiest of pawnbrokers does that.
35-36"I tell you, love your enemies. Help and give without expecting a return. You'll never-I promise-regret it. Live out this God-created identity the way our Father lives toward us, generously and graciously, even when we're at our worst. Our Father is kind; you be kind.
37-38"Don't pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults- unless, of course, you want the same treatment. Don't condemn those who are down; that hardness can boomerang. Be easy on people; you'll find life a lot easier. Give away your life; you'll find life given back, but not merely given back-given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting is the way. Generosity begets generosity."

What is Quvah Training?

Training the Natural Way

Dennis in the round pen The Qavah' Concept
We want to help you get a clearer concept or idea of why we refer to our training as Qavah' training. One reason is it has the letter Q in it which goes with our logo and our name Quilliams.
We are sure you are asking yourselves what is Qavah?? It is a Hebrew word.

qavah (kaw-vaw'); a primitive root; to bind together (perhaps by twisting), i.e. collect; (figuratively) to expect: to be gathered together, to be joined, to meet, to lie in wait, to expect, to hope, to be confident, to trust, to be enduring.

These words are what we hope to accomplish as we work together with our horses. These are not only actions that we take, but an attitude we develop, as we strive to know our horse better and work with him on a different level than maybe we have before. We are developing a true relationship, that gives us a satisfaction and confidence that we have never felt before.

This word is used in the Old Testament a number of times. Isaiah says in chapter 40:28-31
28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable. 29 He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power. 30 Though youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble badly, 31 Yet those who wait, (hope in, rest in,) for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary. NASU

The word "wait" "hope" "rest" is this word "qavah". We believe Isaiah is saying that to gain new strength from the Lord we need to "bind ourselves together with Him" we need to "join" with Him, to "meet" Him and then "expect" and be "confident" that he will fulfill his promises.
Then we will, and only then, will we gain new strength; we will mount up with wings like eagles, we will run and not get tired, we will walk and not become weary.

Every Think I know about People - I learned from Horses

HorseSense HorseManShipMost Everything I know about people I learned from Horses.
The more I work with horses and people the more I learn about each. This is the first in a series of articles I would like to write about some of the things we teach to help in our relationship with our horses, as well as with each other, along with some insights from our creator.
We use 4 keywords in our teaching: Confidence, Consistency, Compassion and Connection.
Confidence seems to be one of the most difficult for most of us to overcome. The key to me is looking past all the things that the horse is showing us, for example, head high, snorting, maybe pawing, ears laid back, turning its rump to us, unsettled etc. It's taking the time to listen to what the horse is trying to tell us, to see thru all the bluff to the heart of the horse. What is he thinking, why is he doing what he is doing, taking time to notice all the other signs beyond the surface. We need to see with the heart. Please don't think I am saying we should not be safe, we need to be careful and think of safety. We are talking about a different mindset.
We need to take the time to understand the horse. Have you ever felt misunderstood? Chances are you have and often are. Think about this. If I look only at the externals, then I will be making decisions about others and about myself on that basis. That means my heart will be affected by the color of the skin, the kind of clothes that are worn, the style and length of the hair, whether they're rich or poor, whether they're ugly or attractive, whether they smell good or bad, whether their habits are appealing or obnoxious, whether their religion is the same as mine, or their politics, or social behavior, even the person who looks like he has it all together, and on and on. There are lots of possible places to hang up and become trapped in a way that puts distance between us.
This is what it means to love our neighbors as ourselves. This is a life-denying view of people. When we don't view people with this view it leaves us vulnerable to judgementalism, to showing partiality, to "cold-shouldering." Instead of loving the other as ourselves, we hate the other for the things we most fear in ourselves.
How you see another person determines the quality and direction of your relationships. If you can only see the externals, you will miss the person every time. If you learn to see with your heart, to penetrate the obstacles of stereotypes, prejudices, possessions, appearance, language, performance, and all the rest - if you look deeply into the heart of another - you will find the real person. Your relationships will become an adventure.
We not only have a need to apply this to people but to the horses that we work with.
Let's add to this thinking another thought. You see people are not the enemy. Your children or your parents are not your enemy. The leaders of the church are not your enemy. Your fellow workers are not your enemy. The people around you in your daily routines - they are not your enemy.
You see our horses think we are the enemy and we think they are the enemy. They are not and we must convince them that we aren't the enemy, but someone they can trust. Someone they can feel confident in because we are confident.
Let's take this a step farther. Only the heart is capable of seeing past the external, and the point of view of Christ is necessary for this. He could see in each person the image of God.
"And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." "Luke 23:33-34
Jesus free from the trap of external seeing could see the Samaritan woman, the adulterous woman, Zacchaeus, Nathanael, Matthew, Dennis Quilliams and you. Differences that created gaps between these people and other religious leaders were overcome immediately by seeing the person the way Jesus did.
Condemned unjustly by Jewish religious leaders, crucified by Roman soldiers, ridiculed by an angry mob of citizens, Jesus - in the midst of pain, humiliation, and apparent defeat - prayed, "Father forgive them; for they know not what they do." They were not the enemy. Jesus was fighting not for His life, But for theirs and yours and mine!
"He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities and he carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted." - Isaiah 53:3-4(NIV)

Trailer Your Horse

TRAILERING: Make sure your horse has enough head space in the trailer. If his ears are touching the roof when his head is at a normal level, the ceiling is too low. Check your trailer over thoroughly at the beginning of each season and make a point of giving it a once-over before every use. Pay particular attention to the floor, doors, latches, hitch, safety chains, wiring, lights, tires and brakes. Your horse can be taught to load quickly and quietly. Get help when you need it. The person driving the trailer should drive, like his cup of coffee is on the dash, and he doesn't want to spill a drop!! Be careful there are no sudden stops/starts and easy does it on the corners.

Leading Your Horse

LEADING: NEVER wrap lead ropes or lead shanks around your hand. Loop them over your palm instead. Learn to lead your horse from both sides. Don't drag the horse behind you or let him charge ahead. NEVER lead a horse by hanging onto his halter - ALWAYS use a lead rope. Tie only to solid objects (fence posts rather than rails, no picnic tables or car mirrors). Use quick release knots or panic snaps.
Important!

Horse's Age

Some people can tell how old a horse is by looking at its teeth. The length of the teeth and the slope of the teeth can show how old the horse is. Horses live an average of 20 - 25 years, but some have lived as long as 30 years or more
Important!

Tip for Improvement

The key to improvement is not always how much you know or how advanced you are with your training methods. It's working to improve what we have already accomplished. To perfect what the horse is already doing. This is the secret of almost all successful horsemen.

About HorseSense HorseManShip

Training & Lessons

Dennis & Cherish The Quilliams method of horse training results from years of experience. Dennis incorporates the philosophy of
training from other Natural Horsemen. Dennis bases his philosophy of training on the mutual respect of horse to man and man to horse. He has been providing riding lessons for people of all ages, with a variety of skill levels and abilities. Dennis began his love of horses as a young man (40+years ago). He lived in the middle of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. So he had to hunt to find that "elusive dream". At the age of 12, he mucked stalls at a local riding stable in exchange for lessons. Beginning with riding English, he soon proved to be a natural horseman and advanced from riding to teaching. He trained his first horse within that first year. Dennis went on to work at various ranches in Alberta, British Columbia & Saskatchewan, continuing his learning and training of ranch horses. He has worked with & trained Quarter horses, Appaloosas, Pintos, Arabian, Warmbloods, Thoroughbreds, and Trekaneners, to name just a few. For several years he worked as Manager and Trainer, on a gaited horse ranch, in Snoqualmie, WA. While on the ranch he trained Gaited Mountain Horses, Tennessee Walkers, Saddle Breds, Peruvians, and Paso Fino.
