Horse Training For Dummies!! Its simple and simply magic!!!

Hello everyone my name is Kristi.
I'm a horse riding instructor in training, horse rider & lover. I live and breathe horses and have done so for a good few years now. I love to train horses and have trained my own horse and quite a few other horses for friends, family and people who need their problem horses worked on.

The thing is training isn't easy and it can be quite dangerous, hence why you need a affective system and understanding in place.

First of all its handy to know that horses are prey animals and they have a amazing flight defense designed to help them survive in the wild.Given the fact that they have been on this planet and thrived so well for such a long time speaks volumes as to how well that mechanism works for them. So therefore even though they have now largely been domesticated, have become accustomed to many things in the modern world and no longer encounter many of the predators they would have in the wild they're inbuilt security system is still very much on high alert, after all, in their opinion ANYTHING that they don't recognize or is new to them is to be feared and avoided at all costs!. To them, it's run or die!.
How horrible would that feel and we all know its not much fun for the handler or the rider either. Anyone fancy their arms being ripped out of their sockets?

Luckily we can train horses that things really aren't that bad! This is called desensitizing! :) This is sooo important, it really can mean the difference between a good ride and a ride in a ambulance.

Kindness*: Gone are the days of old, when barbaric and inhumane methods were used to 'break' the horse, they of course worked, but horses 'broken' in this manner were not working for their owners happily and willingly, but were 'broken' into submission by pain and fear.
Today, most of us who work with horses in one way or another are aware that pain and force usually result in deep seated anger and resentment followed by problematic 'vices' in the horse. We know that to have a horse learn, perform and interact in the manner of which we expect they have to be treated firmly, but kindly from the 'get go'

*Trust*: Where kindness goes, trust follows. This would have to be 'the most important aspect of working with horses, or any animal for that matter. If there is no trust there is no foundation with which to start any kind of interaction. We must first of all gain the horses trust in order for them to have the confidence that will not hurt them and with trust comes respect and if you gain that consider yourself to be worthy owner/trainer of this wonderful animal because they really don't surrender it easily.

Finally, we as horse owners, riders, trainers and educators owe it to these beautiful animals to continue to educate ourselves on kinder, safer and less intrusive methods that we can utilize in our quest to use them for the many purposes of which we do. We must remember that it was not their choice to be used by us humans and it is not our 'right' to use them unkindly.

The horse pictured above is a horse named Pokey, I bought him approx 3 months ago. He is a 4 year old 14.2HH Saddlebred gelding and my oh my he was spoiled by his last owner making him a nasty piece of work. In the first 4 days - a week he had charged towards and bitten my mum giving her a nice bruise, tried to kick out at my head, had broken down two fences in one day and was extremely unpredictable. It had to stop! We had children around. I bought a rope halter and the longest heavy duty lead rope I could find and got to work straight away.

Now this is the magical part! I got Pokey to curve his ways within a few weeks!!!! Simply by..wait for it.. moving his feet! Ha ha "What???" I hear you ask while tilting your head. Have you ever seen horses be horses? Seen them act how they would in the wild? They will charge, bite, bare their teeth, rear, kick and squeal to assert their dominance!
When a horse charges at another its saying "I'm bigger, stronger and you will obey me and not get in my personal space because I am the leader" When the horse runs away, the leader has won, he has shown him that he is the leader and not to challenge him! This is exactly what we need to do. When a horse crowds you, pushes up against you and such he is saying " I don't see you as a leader therefor I will do what I please".
Pokey had many dangerous problems that needed to be fixed and fast. I had to show him that I was boss, I have personal space and he may not enter it unless I say so!"
My mission was to move his feet. I would do anything to make him move, I would wave the lead rope, put my arms in the air ( to appear much bigger then him) and shoo him out of my space! Getting him to turn when I wanted him to, back up when I wanted him to, stop when I asked has changed his whole personality because he knew I was boss. It was quite remarkable actually he went from being a horse I quite frankly didn't like, to us being buddies, sharing hugs and developing a genuine bond! He now follows me wherever I go with or without a lead! Its a great feeling!

This method isn't just for he problem horse. See horses want a leader, them being the leader is to risky having to make all the big decisions, so they look for a leader, YOU are that leader, they want to be with you because they see you as one of his kind, a friend even all because you spoke his language. This is only one method, like a drop of water into the sea.

I have the answers to YOUR problems!!!!

A very important factor in horses is safely! The number 1# way to keep safe is having a co-operative horse, a horse who respects your boundaries, a horse who knows that excited isn't a excuse for jumping all over its handler, a horse that knows that float isn't going to swallow him whole! We all know that finding a horse like this to buy is near impossible! Therefor we have to do what we can to train these horses to be mindful of us. We can't so this alone, we just don't have enough information, but have no fear, I can take the guess work out of the training!!!! Since I have needed alot of help in my time with horses, I have searched and searched through the internet for something that will actually help me and not just take my money and tell me things I already knew! And I FOUND ONE!!!

What if I told you I found a E-Book by a fantastic American trainer named Phil Tragear!

Phil Tragear- Horse Training Success!

But Why listen to me??? Well Its not just me who is raving about it!!!! Take a look:

""All in all, your book has been terrific. It has shown me a kinder more connected way to break and train my horses. I am from a very long line of Thoroughbred Trainers and Jockeys and I knew there was a better way. Thanks for everything."

""I would just like to say how helpful I have found your training guide. I recently bought a 14 month old New Forest gelding that was ok to walk on a lead rope and approach in the field, but would not have his feet picked up for love nor money. So I read your part on repetitive learning and tried this on him. ...he has finally got it. That doesn't just mean his feet. I have used it on many other things with him too. Many, many thanks.""

""Having recently purchased this E-Book I have been busy taking my laptop to bed most nights to swot up on the next chapter. I've found the diagrams very useful aids and the realistic approach. I now also realize that my problems are not the product of a vindictive nature but a misinterpretation between us and so far I've noticed a difference in how we interact and its easier to remain calm and in control and allievate the problem!"
