Which Horse Training Methods Works Best?
Horse training methods are the philosophy of a trainer who has a set of standards by which you train your horse. Deciding on which one to use will be an important step in building a relationship with your horse.
Over the years I have read, watched, listened to and participated in many of these different methods. This includes, but not limited to, John Lyons, Pat Parrelli, Tom Dorrance, Buck Brannamen, Sally Swift and Tom Bell. I do not use one in particular but have taken a little from each based on my ability and understanding of that method.
I recommend this approach to everyone. Each person processes information differently with various levels of ability. As you experiment with these horse training methods, you will find what produces results and what doesn't.
Whatever level you're at, learning what horse training method works best for you is an ongoing education. Never stop learning about your passion and strive to achieve a better relationship with your horse.

Natural Horsemanship Horse Training Method
Natural Horsemanship is the philosophy of working with horses by appealing to their herd mentality and instincts. In order to do this, horses were studied in their wild habitat to learn their communication techniques. These techniques were then imitated through training to build a relationship between man and horse.
This has been a very successful method as it took away the inhuman treatment some methods in the past required. I'm sure there are many people out there that still believe in "horsebreaking" but in my opinion training a horse through submissive means only breaks the spirit of the horse but does not build a relationship between the two of you. I have a much closer bond with my horses through this horse training method as it helps me to get into the mind of my horse.

Theory of Natural Horse Training Method
*Horses are social herd animals and rely heavily on their developed communication system through body language. The knowledge of this body language is incorporated into their training program along with other forms of gentle pressure with increasing escalation in order to get the horse to respond.
*Those who practice natural horsemanship have the same opinion that teaching through fear and pain does not get the desired result. They strive to achieve a horse that is calm and feels safe throughout the training process which results in a bond that is beneficial to both the horse and handler.
*Pressure and release are the core concepts of this horse training method. This technique is applying pressure as a cue to receive an action from the horse. When the horse responds, that pressure is then released.
*Groundwork is used to establish boundaries and set up communication with the horse. This is done through round pen work, lunging and leading exercises.

Horse Training Method/ Understanding the Behavior of a Horse
Have you ever seen children at play and one will suddenly hit another child? This is the same behavior we see in young horses. They will suddenly bite another horse as if saying "hey, pay attention to me" or "stop doing that!" You are now a part of their herd and transfer this behavior to you.
Now with a child it is easy to reprimand them as they understand your language when you tell them to "stop" but how do you communicate this to a horse? Understanding why the horse behaves in such a manner will allow you to be more patient and in the end have a better relationship with your equine partner.
Learning what method works best for you can be done through various means such as books, videos or hands on training. Absorb all you can and then implement what you have learned. Your horse will let you know if you are doing it wrong. If they don't understand, find out what you may be doing wrong and learn how to communicate with your horse.
