Horton the Elephant Who Hatched an Egg and Heard A Who

Horton the Elephant is featured in two Dr. Seuss books, the first "Horton Hatches an Egg" and the second, "Horton Hears a Who." "Horton Hears a Who", the new feature film produced by Blue Sky Studios and released by 20th Century Fox started March 14, 2008.

Horton the Elephant is a good character that can be used with the Horton books or films to teach children about friendship, kindness, loyalty, patience, persistence and tenacity. With his expression that "a person's a person, no matter how small" children can learn about kindness and of being careful with little things, whether they are little children or littler things like bugs.

Since the first Dr. Seuss book was written in 1937 by Theodor Seuss Geisel (who wrote under the pen name of Dr. Seuss) the many different Seuss books have sold over 20 million copies worldwide, been translated into fifteen languages and several made into television programs or featured films. The Horton books are consistently among the top-selling of all Seuss titles generation after generation.

Horton Hears a Who - Started March 14, 2008

"Horton Hears a Who" is about an imaginative elephant who hears a cry for help coming from a tiny speck of dust floating through the air. Suspecting there may be life on that speck and despite a surrounding community which thinks he has lost his mind, Horton is determined to help.

On the fifteenth of May, in the Jungle of Nool...

On the fifteenth of May, in the jungle of Nool,
In the heat of the day, in the cool of the pool,
He was splashing...enjoying the jungle's great joys...
When Horton the elephant heard a small noise.

So Horton stopped splashing. He looked towards the sound.
"That's funny," thought Horton. "There's no one around."
Then he heard it again! Just a very faint yelp
As if some tiny person were calling for help.

"I'll help you," said Horton. "But who are you? Where?"
He looked and he looked. He could see nothing there
But a small speck of dust blowing past though the air.

    H E L L O O O ! ! !

Three reasons to love Horton Hears A Who

  1. He is a lovable character and a good teacher.
  2. An elephant's faithful one hundred percent.
  3. A person's a person, no matter how small.

"A person's a person,
no matter how small.

--Horton, the Elephant"

Horton Hatches the Egg at a Glance

Horton Hatches the Egg is a children's book by Dr. Seuss, first published in 1940. The book, along with Horton Hears a Who later provided the thrust of the plot for the Broadway musical Seussical. The character Horton appeared again in Horton Hears a Who!, published in 1954.

__NOTOC__==Plot summary==

The book concerns an elephant named Horton, who is convinced by an irresponsible bird named Mayzie to sit on her egg while she takes a long "break", which proves to last for months. Naturally, the absurd sight of an elephant sitting atop a tree makes quite a scene. Horton is laughed at by his jungle friends, exposed to the elements, captured by hunters, forced to...

"I meant what I said,
and I said what I meant:
An elephant's faithful one hundred percent."
