You Can be Horton Hears a Who or Horton the Elephant for Halloween

It's easy to become Horton Hears a Who for Halloween. All you need is a headband, a few pipe cleaners, some blue paper, yarn or a large pom pom and a little time. With a few cuts of paper, some twisting and turning you'll soon have your own Horton Hears a Who Ear Headband.

Horton Hears a Who was one of the biggest hits of this past spring. Put on your homemade Horton Hears a Who Ear Headband you'll have one of the best (and easiest) costumes at the office party.

Our homemade version of the Horton Hears a Who Headband Ears made using felt, pipe cleaners (chenille stems) a headband and some fuzzy yarn.

Horton Hears a Who Headband Supply List 



Making your own Horton Hears a Who Headband is also pretty simple. You only need a few supplies.
  1. Horton Blue Paper, Felt or Foamie Sheet.
  2. Headband or Blue Headband.
  3. Ten - Eleven Blue Chenille stems.
  4. Blue fuzzy yarn or pom pom.
  5. Glue or Glue Gun

Steps to Make Horton Hears a Who Headband 

Making your own Horton Hears a Who Headband ears is pretty simple. Just follow the steps below:
  1. Cut Horton ears out of blue construction paper or foamie sheet using the paper model. The ears can be attached by gluing or by catching with chenille stems.
  2. If you start with a blue headband, then glue the Horton ears in place.
  3. If you are going to catch the ears with the chenille stems, then punch out the holes where indicated.
  4. Wrap the Chenille Stems around the Headband catching the ears in the holes so you cover the headband and attach the ears.
  5. Glue the Blue Pom Pom or Yarn on the top to create hair.
  6. Admire your Horton Ears.

Cut out the Horton Ears 

Choose your material. You can make the Horton ears out of:
    1. Construction Paper
    2. Felt
    3. Foamie Sheets
Pick your Ear Pattern and cut out two matching ears.

Attach the Ears 

  1. If you start with a blue headband, then glue the Horton ears in place.
  2. If you are going to catch the ears with the chenille stems, then punch out the holes where indicated.

Punch 6 - 7 holes in middle of tab evenly spaced.

Decide on Position of Ears 



Start wrapping the headbands with the pipe cleaners (chenille stems).

Decide how far to position ears on the headband.

Wrap Ears with the Chenille Stems 



Start wrapping the ears around the headband by going through the punched holes.



One side of the ears attached.

Attach the other ear in the same manner.

Glue or Wrap Pom Pom or Yarn in Place 


Decide on including pom pom or yarn.

Glue or wrap pom pom or yarn at the top of the headband.

Admire Your Ears

Try on your Who Hat.

Adjust the headband and the ears as needed.
