Hospital Medicine
Defining what hosptial medicine is all about
Here's the official definition of Hospital Medicine as define by the Society of Hospital MedicineHospital medicine is a medical specialty dedicated to the delivery of comprehensive medical care to hospitalized patients. Practitioners of hospital medicine include physicians ("hospitalists") and non-physician providers who engage in clinical care, teaching, research, or leadership in the field of general hospital medicine.
In addition to their core expertise managing the clinical problems of acutely ill, hospitalized patients, hospital medicine practitioners work to enhance the performance of hospitals and healthcare systems by:
* Prompt and complete attention to all patient care needs including diagnosis, treatment, and the performance of medical procedures (within their scope of practice).
* Employing quality and process improvement techniques
* Collaboration, communication, and coordination with all physicians and healthcare personnel caring for hospitalized patients
* Safe transitioning of patient care within the hospital, and from the hospital to the community, which may include oversight of care in post-acute care facilities.
* Efficient use of hospital and healthcare resources
The Job Of The Hospitalist
The Road To Becoming A Hospitalist
A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in the practice of hospital medicine. To become a hospitalist, doctors have to complete several training functions, requiring a number of years devoted to study.First of course is medical school. Graduation earns 'doctor' status as an M.D. or a D.O. Of course there was a 4-year degree requirement and passing a rigorous test just to apply for entrance to med school!
Then physicians typically enter residency training for in-depth knowledge about their specialty. Hospitalists generally complete a residency in internal medicine, general pediatrics, or family practice, but may also receive training in other medical disciplines. The majority of hospitalist come from the Internal Medicine residency track as this training has a major focus on caring for hospitalized patients.
Growth Of Hospitalist Jobs
Why more physicians are considering becoming a hospitalist
The Marcus Welby's of yesterday are just about gone. Today's physicians, while still totally devoted to medicine, are insisting on their own quality of life. Working 14 or more hours a day, is not what they have in mind. This is causing many physicians to seek other ways to practice. And many are looking into hospitalist jobs.
Are Hospitalists A Good Thing?
If your 'regular doctor' is not caring for you during a hospital stay, is this good or bad?Hospitalists are often much more familiar with the hospital and its systems and functions than your primary doctor. Because the hospital is the primary location of their practice, hospitalist are able to spend more time with patients. Hospital care provided by your regular physician is limited to the doctor making "rounds" of all of his/her patients before clinic hours, on a lunch hour, or on the way home after office hours.
There are many advantages of hospitalists in the care hospitalized patients. One advantage is that hospitalists' have more expertise in caring for complicated hospitalized patients on a daily basis. They are also more available most of the day in the hospital to meet with family members, able to follow-up on tests, answer nurses' questions, and simply to deal with problems that may arise. In many instances, hospitalists' may see a patient more than once a day to assure that care is going according to plan, and to explain test findings to patients and family members.
Hospitalists also coordinate the care of patients' in hospital and are "captain of the ship." They are the physicians who organize the communication between different doctors caring for a patient, and serve as the point of contact for other doctors and nurses for questions, updates, and designing a comprehensive plan of care. They are also the main physician for family members to contact for updates on a loved one.
Because hospitalists are in the hospital most of the time, they are able to track test results and order necessary follow-up tests promptly. This is in contrast to the traditional setting where your primary doctor may come to the hospital the next day to follow-up the results and take the next necessary step at that time.
All-in-all, Hospitalists are a 'good thing'! By closely monitoring your care, hospitalists are contributing to shorter hospital stays.
