Elite website hosting without the emissions
Here's something you may not know: the IT sector has a huge climate impact. At present, between 3 and 4 percent of all electricity (and the associated carbon emissions) used in the world goes to running data centers. If you're one of the four and a half million registered users of Second Life, consider this: the average Second Life avatar consumes 1,752 kWh of electricity per year, or about two thirds that of an actual person (globally averaged). One server alone has roughly the same climate impact as a 15mpg SUV!
Climate change is real, it's happening now, and we as a planet desperately need to reduce our IT emissions. And if we wait for the government to solve the problem, we'll be waiting for a long, long, LONG time.
If you're a web designer or have some sort of online presence, emissions may have not crossed your mind. It is possible to go green in hosting though, with a company that has a great track record and affordable prices.
Hosted green
I use a web host that has a solid reputation and hosts over a million websites. They became concerned about their carbon emissions and cut down the impact of their office, then switched to more efficient servers. When they felt that wasn't enough, they switched to wind.Their servers are now powered by Texas wind, by 130%. They've neutralized their servers' environmental impact...and are reversing it. They purchase certified Renewable Energy Credits representing 130% of the electricity used to power and cool every last one of their servers.
This is the equivalent of:
1. Removing 444 cars from the road for a year, or
2. Powering 321 homes with clean energy for a year, or
3. Saving 5,654 barrels of oil, or
4. Protecting 551 acres of forest for a year
What kind of hosting do they provide?
The smallest plan they offer is large enough for most regular websites. For $4.95 a month you can get as much disk space and bandwidth as you need, a site builder, 24x7 support, instant backups, a 99.9% uptime guarantee, a 45 day money back guarantee, unlimited subdomains and FTP accounts, unlimited MySQL databases, and all of the scripting languages you could want, from cgi to php to Ruby on Rails.
They have a load of scripts ready to be installed with the push of a button from the control panel. For $7.95 a month you can host as many sites as you want on one account, or get a reseller account and sell your space to others and keep the profits. You can get a business account with SSL for secure payment processing for $12.95 a month.
If you're moving your site, don't worry. They will move it for you for free after you sign up. They have chat, phone and email support and are not outsourced to other countries.

Made in the USA
In 2008, HostGator was recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the fastest growing private companies in America. According to Inc. Magazine, HostGator is the 21st fastest growing private company in America, the second fastest growing private company in the "business services" sector, and the fastest growing private company in Texas.
In order to keep up with the company's rapid growth, HostGator moved from its original office in Boca Raton, Florida into a new 20,000 square foot office building in Houston, Texas. Since moving to Houston in January 2007, the company has added more than 150 employees. The company is growing rapidly and expects to add roughly 200 employees within the next two years.
How do I sign up?
Easy as 1, 2, 3
I use HostGator for some of my sites and recommend them, not just for being green, but for their service and support as well.
