The Science: Why Hot Flash Pillow works
Cool your neck and head - Relieve hot flashes & insomnia
Chilling the cluster of nerves in the neck is a simple, all natural way to quickly relieve hot flashes ~ The science behind The Hot Flash Pillow.
And get this~ the Hot Flash Pillow, straight from the freezer, works to cool the head significantly, thereby promoting the deeper stages of sleep, rendering the product an exceptionally effective natural method to treat insomnia.
Scientific American's article "Putting Insomnia on Ice" (December 23, 2011) and TIME Healthland's article "Tip for Insomniacs: Cool Your Head to Fall Asleep" (June 17, 2011) both point to the neurobiology of insomnia, a disorder of hyper-arousal. An insomnia study was conducted in 2011, in which participants were fitted with cooling caps that used circulating water to cool their prefrontal cortexes. The study determined that cooling the head helped the insomniacs to fall asleep about as fast, and to stay asleep about as long, as those participants without insomnia. And the participants whose caps were set to the lowest temperatures were able to get more sleep than those whose caps were slightly warmer.
In June 2011, at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS), researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine reported their findings. The body's circadian clock, which regulates sleep and wakefulness, keeps the body at its warmest during the day and starts to lower body temperature in the evening to help us doze off. But for those with insomnia, researchers found that the extra brain activity was keeping the brain too hot to sleep. It appears that cooling the brain is one of the simplest, safest, most effective means to help people with insomnia catch more z's!

Looking for a Hot Flash Pillow?
Necessity - The Mother of Invention
by Nancy Peardon
A hot flash creeps up suddenly, day or night, without any warning whatsoever. It's easy to tell when I'm having one. I frantically peel off layers of my clothes, surprised no one else in the room is hot. Last April the dreaded menopause symptoms came knocking at my door. "Unbearably hot in seconds" entered unexpectedly, arm in arm with "Claustrophobic and light headed." To my surprise, "Moist and dewy skin," trailed in several seconds later. I had to mop up a little after "Moist and dewy skin."
My unwelcome house guests had moved in to stay for an undisclosed period. This trio harassed me every night around 3 a.m. I found myself rousing from a sound sleep, kicking off my blankets, and hobbling towards the bathroom, just so I could feel the cold marble floor underneath my bare feet. Much to my constant dismay, I discovered it was nearly impossible to get back to sleep. Two months passed. Sitting in the bathroom one night, desperate to cool off, I thought about how summertime would soon be here and I knew the hot summer would seriously fuel this trio's fire. "Oh, Hell No!" I said. "This is ridiculous. I may not want to take hormone replacement therapy, but that shouldn't mean I have to helplessly endure sleepless nights for years to come!"
No more fooling around. Determined to arm myself against this trio, I found a little ingenuity went a long way to solve my hot flash dilemma, along with some scientific research and my trusty old sewing machine. Now, whenever "Unbearably hot in seconds," "Claustrophobic and light headed," or "Moist and dewy skin" show up unexpectedly, I'm a much better hostess. No longer am I left feeling sleep deprived, let alone helpless when I get hot flashes and night sweats. To chill out blissfully, I simply make a bee-line for my freezer to retrieve my little slice of heaven - my Hot Flash Pillow! Necessity truly is the Mother of invention.

Carpal Tunnel Relief
My use for the pillow wasn't for night sweats or menopause symptoms but rather for a common problem that many writers have - symptoms of carpal tunnel. I found that laying the pillow on my arm at night relieved the pain, it's a comforting weight, the outer material is soft and completely washable and it doesn't leak water all over the bed like an ice pack did. During the day I wrap the pillow around my neck while I'm sitting at the computer for relieving the ache of tense muscles. - by WritingNag
A Male Review of the Hot Flash Pillow
Icing Athletic Injuries
"Hot Flash Pillow is not just for hot flashes. As a long distance runner for several decades now, I'm continually experiencing muscular stresses and strains that require icing after a run to reduce swelling and prevent injury. Hot Flash Pillow is far superior to traditional ice packs and gel packs, whose chill is uneven and brief, with the pack often sweating water on my skin. With Hot Flash Pillow, the chill is uniform, lengthy, and dry. The pillow's flexible shape allows me to apply cold more precisely and thoroughly to aching muscles, while its soft, protective cover allows me to do so without having to place a towel between my skin and a pack to avoid frost burn. I recommend it to any athlete, male or female, looking for a more effective solution to icing injuries."-Bob B., Exeter, New Hampshire.
Other Uses for the Hot Flash Pillow
The Natural Way to Help Heal Yourself
- Insomnia relief - The value of a good night's sleep can't be overestimated. Now whenever I wake up in the night only to find I can't get back to sleep because my mind's spinning, I grab my pillow from the freezer, drape it around my neck and, as I lay my head down, I press the cold against my ears. I always fall into a deep sleep after about 10-15 minutes. Focusing on relaxing and enjoying the refreshing cold, it's easy to empty my mind of thoughts and allow myself to be soothed and lulled back to sleep.
- A ready to go ice pack that doesn't leak
- Cool down in hot weather without running up A/C costs
- Natural remedy for mild back pain
- Migraine and sinus headache pain relief
- Icing sprains and strains with comforting cold (great for athletes)
- First aid treatment for minor burns - I discovered this exceptionally good use for the pillow when I burned the back of my hand in the oven. I wrapped the Hot Flash Pillow around my hand which quickly quelled the pain and stopped the burning better than cold running water. It was also more comfortable and convenient to use than water since I could apply it off and on as needed while not having to stand at the sink.
- Cool down after a workout
- Effectively calms Rosacea flushes
- Relieves neck strain
- Soothes arthritis flareups
- Eases Fibromyalgia pain
- A wonderful treat for anyone who loves sleeping with a cold pillow
- Helps to relieve claustrophobia during allergy attacks
- A comforting cold treatment for children's everyday bumps and bruises
- Great way to help cool your bed on a hot summer night

Rosacea Relief
"I purchased the Hot Flash Pillow to see if it might help Rosacea. Rosacea flushing is very similar to hot flashes; it's the flushing mechanism that damages blood vessels in the face. I hoped a cool pillow wrapped around the neck would nip the flush in the bud. I've tried wearing the Hot Flash Pillow during a flush and was delighted to discover that it calms it down right away." - Frances Strachman What's A Princess To Do?
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is currently considered the most effective therapy for severe hot flashes despite the fact that a large 2002 U.S. clinical trial found that women on hormones had higher rates of heart attack, stroke, breast cancer and blood clots than placebo users. Yet more and more women today choose not to use HRT. There are several herbal or "natural" products marketed for easing menopause symptoms, including black cohosh, soy, red clover and dong quai. But, according to the North American Menopause Society, there is little evidence from clinical trials on whether they work. So, what's a princess to do?
I figure I can try to avoid hot and spicy foods, keep turning down the thermostat (which gets very expensive), and remember to use relaxation techniques, such as yoga or meditation to help my hot flashes. I recall a couple of years ago Dr. Oz offered women sage advice by recommending that we try sleeping with a cooling pillow to ease night sweats, (which are simply hot flashes while we're sleeping). But, like most women, I also get several hot flashes during the daytime. For instance, when I'm sitting at my computer working, or while I'm unloading my groceries, or after I've been exercising, and practically every time I get stressed out about something, a hot flash strikes. I realize, sans HRT, I'm in this hot flash business for the long run, because experts say hot flashes, for most women, dissipate in about 5-10 years.
I know I'm not the only princess desperate for something to cool me down fast. And fellow hot flash sufferers ~ you know I'm seriously talking about something that feels akin to sticking my head in a freezer! I was so doggedly determined not to allow hot flashes to continue to rob me of my comfort, my sleep, and my sanity for untold years to come that I came up with a solution for us all. Now, whenever I get hot flashes, the Hot Flash Pillow immediately goes to work to put the fire out. I use my Hot Flash Pillow whether I'm sleeping, sitting, walking, or working, and it always makes me smile because I'm far more comfortable, considerably less stressed, and, best of all, I always sleep much better. Night sweats used to cause me to wake up each morning feeling irritable, moody, and fatigued, but not anymore. Since I've been using my Hot Flash Pillow there can be no doubt my quality of life is ever so much better. To quote John Burroughs ~ "I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order."

- The pillow is fabulous. I don’t know how I ever lived without it. It drapes so nicely over my shoulders when suffering at my puter :) And that pillow has gotten me though several nights! It is such an amazing idea. I just never thought of sleeping with something on my neck/head. It really makes a difference and I am sleeping 4 hours straight for the first time in a long time. Wow. I think it is a real winner. The right peeps just need to find out about it.
I love the pillow. I like holding it on my ears also. Works so fast and is such a relief.

- In Chinese medicine, we know that that the liver is the primary source of the heat. It will appear as fever rising all the way to the top of the head. Any cooling of the neck where the person is not deficient of energy could be very beneficial to hot flash in menopause.
