eBay Research Tools
eBay produces pages and tools for its sellers to find the hot items or hot categories.
http://pages.ebay.com/sell/whatshot/index.html
Unfortunately, if you visit this page, it is a bit dated as it is entitled "What's Hot for Spring". I was under the impression that it was updated every month.
eBay also used to produce a report called Hot Items by Category . This report shows you which categories and subcategories are on fire; the ones that produce the highest bid-to-item ratios which means that demand is outpacing the supply. The problem with this report is that the last one is dated December 2007, so apparently eBay is not producing this report anymore.
But if you want to see the last one, the eBay Hot Items by Category report is located at:

eBay Pulse is another research page that eBay provides. It gives a daily snapshot of current trends, hot picks, and cool stuff on eBay. This page shows you several lists including popular searches, some of the best eBay stores, popular products, highest priced items, most watched items and more.

Finallly, there is eBay Marketplace Research. This is a paid service offered by eBay.
"Marketplace Research enables buyers and sellers to gather critical intelligence on buying and selling trends in the eBay marketplace. View and analyze top searches, average start prices, average sold prices and much more. This easy-to-use product makes getting to the data you need quick and efficient."
Current pricing is:
Fast Pass ($2.99 for 2 days access), Research Basic ($9.99 per month) and Research Pro ($24.99 per month).

[Edit]As of August 18, 2008, eBay is discontinuing its Marketplace Research service and is referring all of its customers to Terapeak.[/Edit]
