New Business Model or Is It All Wet?

So I've been hearing more about outfits that use portable and inflatable hot tubs for parties and events - hot tubs for rent.

You have them deliver a portable unit to your house or wherever, they set it up, you enjoy the tub for the day or however long, and when done you pay and they cart it away. Seem like a good model for people who want hot tubs, but don't own one, and want to have some fun at a party.

Is there a big market for this? Good question, but judging by the number of companies that are already doing it, I'd say yes.

I mean look at them. It started out as book night and now they're in their skivvies drinking wine and laughing. What a night! (Ok, I'm letting my imagination run mild).

Still, I was intrigued by the concept and thought I'd throw in my two cents. I think starting your own business may be a good way out of this recession, but is the hot tub rental market the ticket out?

What Does it Take To Run a Hot Tub for Rent Business?

At first glance the idea "Hot Tubs for Rent" seems like an obvious and brilliant, even easy idea, but there's a lot of preparation and logistics involved in making it work.

First, naturally, you're going to need to buy some hot tubs. Good portable hot tubs can run you anywhere from $500-2000. The more durable, the better as they will get a lot of wear and tear from use and transportation. Don't forget that, depending on the model, you will need to invest in filters, chemicals, cleaning agents, tools and other necessities to setup , maintain and break down your rented hot tubs.

Also, most portable hot tubs hold 4-6 people max. Big party? You're going to need more tubs. That's fine if you can afford it, but $500-2000 per unit adds up, plus the cost for more personnel to maintain, clean, set up and break down units

Fortunately, due to the relatively small break down size of portable hot tubs, you won't need a huge truck to make it work. You can set up several units from the back of a pick up truck or SUV.

You will need some help. Moving and setting up a portable hot tub can be a 2 person affair, and you may want to leave a "hot tub expert" on site to deal with pump problems, leaks, heater problems, questions, etc. A clever hot tub rental company may have their hot tub tech double as a server or other agent in a themed party - use your imagination.

You will need to figure out how you're going to fill the tub. Some companies bring the water with them, while others fill up wherever they are. Draining is a bigger issue. You can't just dump it somebody's yard. Disposal of dozens to hundreds of gallons of water isn't necessarily easy.

Timing and scheduling is also important. It takes the better part of a day to heat up a portable hot tub, and needs do be done a day in advance or very early in the morning for a night event. A one day rental may take three days to transport, set up and break down. Schedule accordingly and work to make multi-day deals to offset the long set up time.

All portable and inflatable hot tubs come with warranties, but be sure you know what's covered and what you need to do to get repairs. Repairs will probably eat up most of your revenue, even ahead of payroll.

Hot tubs for rent is all about marketing and advertising. Find interesting ways to tell people about this unique business, and customers will come.

An idea I had was to create a location and have people come in, using the tanning bed or spa model. An existing tanning place or nail spa may add a hot tub as an additional feature. There's tons of potential.

Who Would Want to Rent a Hot Tub?

As I said, the prime market is parties and celebrations. You don't need an excuse to rent a hot tub, you just need some people to enjoy it with (or keep it to yourself).

Fraternity and Sorority parties
Birthdays, Sweet Sixteens, Quinceaneras, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs
Retirement Parties
Graduation Celebrations
Prom After Party
Any After Party
Job Celebrations
Bachelor/Bachelorette Parties
Going Away Parties
Welcome Home Parties
Holidays
Weekend Gettogethers/Barbeques
Date night
Personal enjoyment
Short Term Therapeutics

There are as many reasons as there are events you can hold at your house (or some other location where you have the permits).
