Hot water bottles are staging a comeback because they have so many uses. It's quite amazing when you go into it: not just to stay warm but for health, in sports recovery and just for comfort.
I'm cataloguing them, in my free daily story the Eventful Life of Archie the Royal Hot Water Bottle - http://hot-water-bottle-covers-etc.blogspot.com.au/

You don't see these so much any more. I had one as a kid which I loved and on a trip to England I bought my wife one because she is always complaining of cold feet. She loves it!

Ah, this takes me back to the old ages ... or so ... when I was a kid. Now that the ex is gone, it's time for me to get another hot water bottle to replace him.

I don't have a hot water bottle story, but your page makes me want to invest in one. My story is from early in our marriage, we lived in an old farmhouse in northwest Iowa. The house had one wall heater that was somehow supposed to heat the whole house, it was downstairs in the livingroom. The bedroom upstairs was an iceberg so my wife would go up and run her hair dryer under the covers for 10 minutes and it was bearable, sometimes even cozy.
My grampa told me when he was a kid they sometimes went without shoes in the winter time, they would run after the dairy cows and carry the heated flat stone which cooled off pretty quick, so sometimes they would stand where a cow just peed. ewwww is right. We are so fortunate to have shoes. A friend of mine has a program where they collect shoes for some very poor villages that go without shoes because a pair of shoe may cost what they earn in a month. http://www.lightfeetproject.org/

I prefer the hot water bottles over the microwave bags. Hot water is almost always available, whereas a microwave oven many not be!

unfortunately, we could use some of these today -- MAY 15! -- in wet, cold Chicago :(

Mark, It is so freezing cold in the UK at present, that even with the heating on and a wood fire, my daughter and wife "cuddle" hot water bottles for extra warmth.
  • JonHunt Dec 9, 2010 @ 4:17 am | delete
My girlfriend is the same - in fact it's hard to pry her away from her hot water bottle for even a moment!
  • LizMac60 Dec 6, 2010 @ 1:43 pm | delete
Nothing like a hot water bottle on a snowy night in Britain. Blessed by a squid angel and featured on my lens Me?!! A Squid Angel.
  • JaguarJulie Dec 6, 2010 @ 12:36 pm | delete

Hot water bottles are a great holiday gift idea! So are flasks, glogg and alpaca blankets! All are winter warmers.
  • puerdycat Nov 22, 2010 @ 2:34 pm | delete
Many years ago, 40?, someone actually gave me a hot water bottle as a gift. He was a doctor friend. Staying in his realm? If only it had had a turtleneck. Thanks for this!
  • Tipi Nov 21, 2010 @ 3:50 pm | delete
What an amazing selection you have here! I love that you did a safety spot, don't want to have any burns when going for comfort!
  • TheWhistler Nov 8, 2010 @ 10:55 am | delete

  • jgelien Oct 11, 2010 @ 10:45 am | delete
I am glad hot water bottles are making a comeback. I have an old red plaid one and there is nothing more soothing on a cold night for aches, pains or just comforting heat.
  • WhiteOak50 Sep 26, 2010 @ 10:33 am | delete
Your lens are very unique and that makes them interesting! Although I have heard of hot water bottles, I have never seen any like this. This is just an awesome idea. Good work!
  • thesuccess Sep 26, 2010 @ 1:15 pm | delete
WhiteOak50 your kindcomments warmed me on a cold day, hot water bottle time again
  • Sylvestermouse Nov 29, 2009 @ 10:59 am | delete
These are awesome! (I love your bear hot water bottles, they are really cute) I seem to always be cold in the winter. My husband can tolerate the cold better than I can. I am constantly wrapped in a blanket or robe. My sister in law gave me some booties similar to the ones you have featured above, they are wonderful if will sit still (very rare) but walking around in them is a bit like wearing weights on your feet. Still a neat idea and worth the warmth provided.
  • WordCustard Nov 20, 2009 @ 3:39 am | delete
Loads of choice here! I love the convenience of the microwavable hotties - need them here in Scotland during the winter months!
  • thesuccess Nov 20, 2009 @ 7:16 am | delete
Hi WordCustard, I have to fill three water bottles every winter evening, for wife, daughter and son. Plus heat the microwavable neck wraps. I know no matter how mad my wife might be with me that I'm earning brownie points when she climbs into a warm bed!
  • lens4Him Nov 17, 2008 @ 8:58 am | delete
This has brought back a lot of memories - it's a very long time since I last filled a hot water bottle
  • diggyisking Oct 26, 2008 @ 11:56 am | delete
Hey! Haven't had a hot water bottle since I was a kid, but I must admit that they are pretty awesome! Great lens and good luck on your journey!
  • flaminglacer Oct 24, 2008 @ 4:31 am | delete
I love my hot water bottle and my wheat roll too, in fact that is round my neck as I write this - stops my neck aching after too many hours staring at the screen....
  • IshGradar Oct 23, 2008 @ 10:13 am | delete
Have you noticed that even if the central heating is on, it's still cold under the duvet!
A hot water bottle would cure that!
