How Australian hotel rooms are rated

Star ratings

Like most countries, Australian hotels are classified by star ratings.

These ratings start at 2 star hotels, (though some try to pull a 1 star). These are the most basic of hotels, generally with shared facilities. One could almost describe them as hostels.

The top of the range is 6 star hotels - yes there is one of these in Australia on the Gold Coast in Queensland. Generally however a 5 star hotel is as good as you could expect.

Compared with many overseas hotels, Australia's three star hotels are generally superior to those of equal star rating in say France. Why, generally because the hotels are more modern.

The minimum you can expect from a 2.5 star hotel in Australia is a small fridge that contains clean drinking glasses, small containers of long-life milk, coffee-making facilities, bathroom facilities for your own room, towels, a double or two single beds and clean linen. Generally most hotels have some form of air-conditioning and a TV.

At the top of the range, the 5 star hotels, you can also expect a far more spacious room, or perhaps a suite of rooms, high class fittings, the fridge will be stocked with a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, a large TV with a selection of free and pay movies, queen or king sized beds with quality linen, large bathroom which may be marble lined or similar.
