This lens tells why you might want to connect your Hotmail account to Outlook (even if you don't yet have a Hotmail account!), and walks you through the whole process. Get cranking, and you'll be able to set this up in minutes.

Hotmail for Mobile Workers with Problems Sending Mail

Note: Travelers with laptops often find their normal SMTP (outgoing mail) server doesn't work when they are away from home, meaning they can't send emails.

If you're looking at Hotmail as a way around this problem, there is an alternative. SMTP2Go provides an SMTP server that was specifically designed to work from any location in the world. It comes highly recommended as it prevents the dreaded "550 Relay" errors and eliminates the "can't send email problem" and it really does work!

What's Special About Hotmail and Outlook

Windows Live Hotmail email is a web-based mail service from Microsoft that uses the HTTP protocol instead of POP3 like most other online mail services. This gives it some real advantages when it comes to working with Outlook.

With an HTTP connection, Outlook and Hotmail can share information. In practical terms, this means that the way you organize your mail in Hotmail folders automatically gets duplicated in Outlook. It also means that any changes you make to these folders and the messages in them automatically get synchronized when Outlook next connects. And it goes the other way too. When you make changes to your Hotmail folders in Outlook, or do something with a Hotmail message in Outlook, those changes get sent over to

For example, if you create a new Hotmail folder on the server (using the normal Hotmail web interface), that new folder will appear in Outlook the next time Outlook connects to the Hotmail server. Similarly, if you do something to a Hotmail folder or a message in a Hotmail folder using Outlook, that change gets synchronized to the Hotmail server the next time Outlook connects.

Unfortunately, the free version of Hotmail cannot connect to Outlook (or any similar program), so we need to have a Hotmail Plus account to get this done. It's not free, but at only $19.95/yr Hotmail Plus isn't terribly expensive. Shall we get started?
