I just came back from China. In more than one of the cities I visited we enjoyed HotPot for our meal. We each had a personal sized hotpot and cooked our meal as we visited. I would like to purchase some of these for use at home. I have searched and cannot find the individual sized hotpots. Anyone have any ideas?
  • ChouDoufu Nov 9, 2011 @ 7:49 am | delete
Really, any small metal pot on a good electric hot plate will do. For home family use, however, the larger shared hotpots are more practical than setting up multiple hot plates.

my x is taiwanese and we cooked this every weekend...it is very fun to cook fresh meats and vegetables right at the coffee table while watching a movie...hotpot meals can and should be enjoyed slow for a couple of hours, and watching movies is a great combination to the meal.

We are hours away from any Asian markets. Are there any on-line distributors of hot pot meats and ingredients?
  • ChouDoufu May 9, 2011 @ 2:20 pm | delete
Not sure. The most difficult is the sha cha sauce. Beyond that it depends on what vegetables and cuts of meat you can get from your local grocers.

thank you, I love the idea - plus is looks very healthy.

Terrific Lens !! Helpfull, Informative and delicious too !
I've had this meal & method twice at an Asian friends house. I'm now addicted to the communal meal closeness, and atmosphere that sharing/cooking your food with others creates.
I'm off to buy a Hot Pot now !
Thankyou for the time and effort you have put into this. - Kevin Bairnsdale Vic Au.

Thank you Margaret. I miss participating in the forums, but I'm busy with a start up company that is taking up all of most of time time. What time I do have I owe my family. I do my best, however, to nurture my lenses now and then and enjoy reading comments from you all!

    Great page!
After living in Taiwan, I miss having hot pot on a regular basis and have often thought of making my own. My favourite broth was the tomato as you describe above. Any suggestions on where I might find a recipe for making my own tomato hot pot broth?

I haven't heard of Maki Mi, but perhaps some of the visitors here have. Anyone?
  • netstralogy Jan 11, 2007 @ 12:11 pm | delete
I'm part-Chinese/Filipino from the Philippines and we used to eat this food called Maki-Mi. It's a noodle soup in brown sticky sauce and it tastes really good. I'm trying to find it here in the States but I couldnt find any. Have you heard of this kind of dish?
  • TimothyChan Jan 5, 2007 @ 12:33 pm | delete
Yeah..I've been to Taiwan many times especially on military training during my reservist. Yes, my favorite is of course Chou Dou Fu with the little bit of salted vegetatables. Infact I loved Taiwanese chou dou fu better than Hong Kong's. I also like Tien Bu La, dumping

Great lens about hot pots. We just had it for New Year celebration. We had 2 pots because some does not like spicy food and others can't do without. It is a great meal for social gathering. It is also great for cold winters. The one other ingredient I would add to your sauce list is sesame paste.

Maybe you don't travel. Hot pot restaurants or restaurants offering hot pot dishes are sprouting up throughout North America and I assume Europe as well. Anyone know of any good spots for hot pot in your locale? Post it here!
  • HeidiEaston Oct 17, 2006 @ 2:46 pm | delete
Very interesting information. I liked seeing the photos. I'll have to travel in the not-so-far future. HCE
