The Benefits of Hot Stone Therapy And Hot Stone Massage

As a Hot Stone Therapist here are some of the many benefits of hot stone massage.

The warmth of the stones help loosens stiff muscles. It is great way to unwind and relieve stress. I found that each client has different needs.

The application of water-heated stones for doing hot stone therapy targets key points on the body and giving a deep massage and creating sensations of comfort and warmth.

I always use natural materials - my choice of oil is rice oil - for holding the stones in place I use bags filled with rice.

The size of stone I select for hot stone therapy range from very small for doing toe work to large for working on the back.

I prefer the smooth basalt stones for doing the massage part of hot stone therapy.

I prefer river stones for warming and loosening the muscles.

I always test the heat of the stones with my client. I set the mood in the room by using soft light and music to help each client relax.

What is a Hot Stone Therapy?

This is a relaxing technique that is not modern, It origins comes from the Far East almost five thousand years ago and also practiced in the baths of ancient Rome.

A hot stone therapy is different then a more traditional full body massage or a therapeutic massage in that it requires a more gentle touch and in some cases the therapist may not even touch you, other then to position the hot stones.

The wonderful thing about this type of massage is that it doesn't hurt, unlike other forms of massage that require deep and sometimes painful kneading.

This makes it perfect for those whose pain threshold may not be very high and are not accustomed to hot stone therapy.

The combination of the heat and light massage strokes in hot stone therapy it will help with clearing toxins and unblock the body's natural channel of energy and in turn relieves stress and tension.

History Of Hot Stone Therapy

The European cultures used hot rocks to heat their saunas, and applied hot stones to tired and sore muscles to alleviate tension and muscle pain. Native Americans also used hot rocks in their traditional sweat lodge ceremony, large rocks were used to heat the sweat lodge while smaller hot rocks were passed around to place on specific areas of tension.

The Chinese history dating back four thousand years to the Shang Dynasty also shows the use of hot stones to relieve stress, tension and pain. In Oriental Medicine hot stones are used in conjunction with the Meridian channels to promote a better flow of energy around the body.

In Ayurvedic medicine in India, the hot stones were used in conjunction with their knowledge of the Marma points.

The Japanese used hot stones in Anma, the oldest form of East Asian Massage. The Japanese hot stone therapy techniques create similar effects to moxibustion, in that heat penetrates and stimulates the tsubo, or acupoints.

The Hawaiians also used lava rocks in their Lomi-Lomi. Rough stones were used to exfoliate after a massage, while smooth lava rocks were either placed on the body in ti-leaves or used to massage. At times two stones were tapped together against the body to allow deep tissue vibrational healing. The lava stone was used as a symbol for healing and protection.

What Happens During A Hot Stone Massage

By Chris Turley

There's no better way to spend your free time than to indulge in a session of hot stone therapy to take all the stress away from your mind and body and to leave you renewed and refreshed than ever.

If you have never tried this relaxing and soothing experience, not only are you missing a lot of things but you may also be wondering what these stones have got to do with the massage.

Hot stone therapy is a variation of the classic massage that incorporates heated stones to release muscular tension and stress. Basalt stones which are rich in iron are usually utilized because they are efficient in retaining heat.

In preparation for a hot stone therapy, the therapist sanitizes the stones of different sizes and shapes, and then heats them by immersing in 120 and 150 degree water.

Once the client arrives, the therapist gives time for the client to get ready, lie on the massage table face down and relax for a few minutes before the session starts.

The therapist begins by applying massage oil on the client's body to allow for the stones to easily glide over the muscles
. Stones will then be placed in key points of the body that are known to be energy centers such as on the back, in the palms of the hands and in between toes.

Traditional Swedish massage strokes are incorporated during the therapy while the stones are placed on the body. There are times when the therapist will also use the stones in applying pressure on the muscles.

The therapist always touches the stones first to make sure it's not too hot to scald the client's body. If there's anything that the client is uncomfortable with, he or she can speak up because the therapist welcomes any concerns and makes the necessary arrangements to ease the client's apprehension.

After the entire process of placing stones and massage the back part of the body, the client is asked to turn over and the sequence will be repeated.

During the therapy, the heat of the stones regulates the circulation of energy as well as work wonders in relaxing the muscles. This also promote deep muscle and tissue relaxation.

Aside from that, this therapy is also known to be an effective way to release toxins that are clogged in the body. This is why a client is advised to drink plenty of water after a session to flush out these toxins.

Tips for Therapists

Hot Stone Massage

Selection for Hot Stone Massage

Stones for Hot Stone Massage are selected according to their composition, size, texture and shape.

The stones for hot stone massage are igneous or metamorphic and come in a variety of colors depending on the mineral make up of the stone: green, black, brown, blue, and gray.

The shape of a stone is important for particular body placements, such as a cylindrical stone for the neck and oval stone for the palm. The texture is important as you don't want to scratch a client.

Being careful when choosing stones ones that have sharp edges or any sharp cracks may make your client very unhappy.

Most natural stones have curves and crevasses and as long as they are smoothed they are excellent to use in massage.

A slightly rough stone can be used for exfoliation your clients skin if client wishes to have it done. Always asks your client before exfoliation with oil and softly.

Heating the Stones

When you heat basalt stones or other stones for doing hot stone massages always make sure they are heated in water as there is always a possibility of them cracking. If you heat them in water, the water will contain any damage that may occur due to the stone breaking. This is highly unlikely , but you still need to be aware of the possibility.

Never heat the stones in a microwave or in a dry oven.

Have a bowl with cool water that you can place stones in that you may feel is too warm for your client.

Always as your client how the heat of the stone is for them

The water in the hot stone heater should be a temperature that is comfortable for you to place your hand in - it is quite simple really if the stone is too hot for you to handle it is too hot for your client.

By taking precautions with your hot stones you will ensure a safe session for both you and your client.

The hot stones feel wonderful for the therapist to work with and at the end of a session don't be surprise if you feel as renewed and relaxed as your client.

Before a Hot Stone Treatment

Tips For Clients

Before a Hot Stone Treatment

Asking the therapist to describe the hot stone session

Will you please describe the hot stone massage in detail?

Are the stones and heater(s) cleaned thoroughly before each and every use?

How will the massage compare with a regular massage?

What products and oils do you use with the hot stone massage?

Next, you will want to ask how the stones are sanitized. Unfortunately, this can vary as greatly as the massages.

Therapists keep their stones in the same water from client to client, and do not wash the stones between clients.

There are spa sanitizers made for this purpose, which, left in during multiple hot stone sessions, helps with kill all germs and bacteria. Also some therapists wipe each stone off with rubbing alcohol before putting back into the heaters.

Some therapists use special oils or products for their hot stone massages. This can add to the experience greatly. The best rule is if you couldn't eat it, don't use it in a hot stone massage.

If essential oils are used, they should be selected with care.

As a client if the hot stones are to Hot for you tell your therapists.

I do ask my clients question and my clients ask questions to me. Remember you and your therapist are a team.

15 Easy Steps on How to Give a Hot Stone Therapy Massage

Step 1: Prepare the basic hot stone therapy equipment that you'll need such as a massage table, linen or sheet for the table, massage oils, hot stones like basalt stones (you may need 40-50 pieces of stones), and electric roasting pan .

Step 2: Before the client arrives, prepare the massage room by draping the massage table with clean linens and by setting up a tranquil ambience through pleasurable aromas, low lighting and soothing music.

Step 3: Heat up the stones that you will be using. Temperature of the water that works best for me is 105 to 110 degrees.

Step 4: Once the client arrives, give him or her ample time to relax before the session. Be sure to explain the process of hot stone therapy.

Step 5: Ask the client to lie down on the table on they back. Always test the heat of the stone to your client's comforted before you place hot stones. Start by putting a hot stone in each of your client's palms.

Step 6: Begin place small stones between each of your client's toes on his or her right foot and then the left foot. Now make sure you have oil on the legs as you work with the hot stones. Do each leg (I prefer not go over bone with hot stone.)

Step 7: I put a light amount oil on the face before doing hot stone therapy. Use small hot stones to place on the face. Place one underneath the lips, then one on each cheek and one in the center of forehead.

Step 8: First you need to remove the hot stone under your client's palms. Go to your client's arm, and use a smoothing stroke to lightly put the oil on .Massage the arm area by using medium-sized flat stones.

Step 9: Before asking your client to turn over. Remove the stones you've placed on the face and toes.

Step 10: Hot stones on the back area make should you have but oil on the back first. . Next I place the hot stones from the buttocks up to shoulder (I prefer to have hot stones on the muscles ) I place my bags filled with rice on top of the stones so the heat can go deep into the muscle.

Step 11: Go to the back of your client's legs and using oil and hot stones start from the just underneath the buttocks and using a flat stone about medium sized hot stone. Lightly massage down to the knee. I like to make should the calf is massage good.

Step 12 Use your hot stones to massage the neck and shoulder area of your client.

Step 13: Remove the stones you've placed on the client's body.

Step 14: For the finish use smoothing strokes on the client's back and arms and legs area using the tips of your fingers

Step 15: At this point I have my client roll over to they back or side and give my client time to cool down. Always make sure your client does not get up to soon. I always stay with client tell they are ready to get up before leaving the room.

Hot Volcanic Stone Massage Therapy

This ancient healing treatment of warm volcanic stones helps balance and ground your senses

These black volcanic stones have a range of various sizes as illustrated above. They should adapt to the different areas of the body. They have been subjected to a process that has left them perfectly polished and has confered them the opportune physiognomy: the round ones are suitable for the hands and the arms; those lengthened, for the area of the neck; and the finest, for the back and the scapulas.

The deepest and durable benefit is obtained thanks to the colour of the dark stones of volcanic origin. These are then heated and pressed onto the skin in the aching areas. Whosoever undergoes this massage will notice a sensation of a "pleasant pain." The heat, slowly released by the stones, relaxes the muscles.

Cold Stone Massage Kit

8 White Cold Stones

Cold Stones are a great way to incorporate the hot vs cold therapy often utilized in hydrotherapy where by hot relaxes while cold stimulates. The combination can be very energizing.
Using light colored stones for the cold therapy increases the power of the therapy because lighter colors retain cooler temperatures longer. While darker colors retain hotter temperatures longer.
At the end of a session cool stones could then be placed on the pulse points for revitalizing, rejuvenating and release the "soaring spirit". They are wonderful for the eyes for reducing dark circles and puffiness.

Hot Stone Therapy - Description and Benefits

The benefits for the body

When hot stone therapy was first introduced to the public a few years ago, it was a novelty. The stones used were all heated, and there were specific ways to use them. Now, though, the use of hot stones in massage has been expanded, which make them much more adaptable to the needs of the person getting the massage.

Stones used for hot stone therapy can be large or small, smooth or rough, dark or light. Large stones can be used to treat large areas of the body, and are great for some of the more sweeping strokes of Swedish massage. Smaller stones can get into smaller spaces. Smooth stones glide effortlessly, but rougher ones are useful too, because the friction they produce "wakes up" and warms up tissue, and can even produce some exfoliation. And pointed stones are wonderful for treating very specific areas

Very dark stones heat up faster and hold heat longer. But they can sometimes get too hot, or release their heat too fast. Stones that are not quite so dark - gray, for instance - may not get as hot, but they also won't cool down so fast. And if cold is needed, there are always light-colored and white stones.

People who've had hot stone therapy with only hot stones usually rave about it.
