The Hot Sauce High

All about the burn and why we like it.

A friend of mine once asked me, "Why in the world would you eat something that is that freaking hot?" Well, I think I have figured it out. I like the hot sauce high. Let me explain.

When we eat hot sauce, which is made from chili peppers, we feel a burn. What causes that burn is a chemical called capsaicin. Capsaicin is found in the white pith around the seeds and in the tissues and membranes of the pepper. This chemical bonds to pain receptors in the mouth causing the burn. So what is it that I mean by the "hot sauce high"?

The high that hot sauce gives us comes from the body's natural reaction to pain. When we feel pain our body produces a chemical in the pituitary gland and hypothalamus called endorphins. Endorphins are the human body's naturally produced narcotic pain killers. Endorphins will go to work killing pain and cause a feeling of euphoria.

You have surely heard of runner's high, well I think we also get a hot sauce high.

Another way to think about the hot sauce high is to equate it with sex. Endorphins are also released when we have an orgasm giving us that euphoric, relaxed and contented feeling. So a hot sauce high is our little orgasm of sorts. So my dear friend, that is why I like to eat something that is that freaking hot.

The Great Salsa Book

Don't Want to Make Your Own? Try These Salsas!

I have given these all a try and they are damn hot! They also taste great and each one has their own unique flavors. Hot Heads give them a try!

Pepper Dog Salsa - Hot - $ 5.99
Pepper Dog Salsa is a North Carolina original, but don't let that fool you: this salsa has authentic flavor and is as good as any fresh-made restaurant salsa. The texture is thick, not watery, and the heat comes from a blend of jalapeno and habanero peppers. There's no vinegary aftertaste, either, like you'll find in many store brands. Pepper Dog Hot Salsa is fiery enough to satisfy your need for some burn (we consider it to be medium-hot), but not so fiery that it will overpower your tastebuds. The heat does build with every bite, however! We fell in love with Pepper Dog Salsa the first time we tried it, and we think you will, too. A Goodness Grows in NC product. Shake well before opening. Refrigerate after opening.

Make your own Hot Sauce!!!

I found a website that shows how to concentrate the capsicum in the chili pepper. Be careful when doing this if you choose to try it, it is a dangerous project! I take no responsibility it you get hurt. This is for your own information, I do not encourage you to try this if you don't know what you are doing.

Concentrate Capsicum

Once you have concentrated capsicum it is soluable in oils or alcohol. This should give you some ideas on how to make your own hot sauce.

My Favorite Hot Sauce

Not the hottest, but great for general everyday use.

My favorite hot sauce to use for general everday use is Crystal brand hot sauce. This sauce has a wonderful flavor and goes well with many foods. It is just hot enough to let you know you aren't eating ketchup. By the way it mixes well with ketchup to make the ordinary turn into a masterpiece of fire.

Crystal hot sauce is great to use with eggs, mac & cheese, mixed with ketchup or just about anything you want to spice up a bit at the table. I also use Crystal hot sauce in my Buffalo Wings Recipe.

Crystal has a much better flavor than Tabasco. It makes by far the best "table hot sauce" over any of the other brands. Frank's hot sauce runs a close second for "table hot sauce".

I once had a sponnful of econa hot pepper sauce for a bet. I literally got high from it, my head was spinning!

That guy is like sweating in the video...Soooooo fuuunnnnnyyyy

I used Dave's Insanity Sauce for ketchup when I first got it, it's warm. If you want heat try Blair's Jersey Death. But I just tried pepper palaces 'Hottest Sauce in the Universe the Second Dimension', claimed to have 40 pounds of ghost pepper in every batch. All I can say is it tasted good but for me it had about the same amount of heat as Dave's Insanity Sauce. You have to remember that while the peppers play a big role in the heat all of the other ingredients really do determine the true heat.
  • blanckj May 31, 2011 @ 8:06 am | delete
It's not the hottest unless it's made from the ghost chili. On the Scoville scale, this chili makes the habenero seem like your sucking on an ice cube. The tribe that grows it makes the teenage boys eat one as a right of passage into manhood. I'll take your word for it that these are hot though.
  • MamaBelle Mar 11, 2011 @ 10:44 am | delete
Part of me wants to try some...perhaps in some chilli and not licking it off my finger like the guy in the video.

  • jbauer0318 Jan 31, 2011 @ 6:53 pm | delete
Ha Ha, I didn't feel bad for him. I thought it was funny but that is because I have done the same thing he did! It was agony!

the mad dog ghost chili sauce is AMAZING!!!!! before you dive in though i recommend you watch the video above with the guy trying Daves Insanity sauce.....its similar to that. if you are a hot sauce junkie like me, its the way to go....but its not for light hearted!
  • MartinPrestovic May 14, 2010 @ 11:55 am | delete
Great lens! Not sure if I want to try the hottest hot sauce though. I only know of one that I like and enjoy. The red one with the cock design. Its good to use on roasted pork and grilled beef.

Sissy girl, right here! *raising my hand* A little on the spicy side is good. That I can handle. But HOT hot sauce, nah, I can't handle it. Got some in my eye once, by the way. NOT fun.

Dave's Insanity Hot Sauce is intense. To call it hot is a huge understatement. Somehow I still am drawn to it in spite of it bringing me sweat and suffer. Nice lens on hot sauce.

An unusual lens...I like hot, but probably not THAT hot! Always have a glass of milk on hand too!
