The Hound Group

The Hound Breed

Most hounds share the common ancestral trait of being used for hunting. Some use acute scenting powers to follow a trail. Others demonstrate a phenomenal gift of stamina as they relentlessly run down quarry. Beyond this, however, generalizations about hounds are hard to come by, since the Group encompasses quite a diverse lot. There are Pharaoh Hounds, Norwegian Elkhounds, Afghans and Beagles, among others. Some hounds share the distinct ability to produce a unique sound known as baying. You'd best sample this sound before you decide to get a hound of your own to be sure it's your cup of tea.

Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is a short-legged breed of dog of the hound family. They are scent hounds, bred to hunt rabbits by scent. Their sense of smell for tracking is second only to that of the Bloodhound.
They have a very gentle and lovable temperament and are, quite frankly, the best dog with children. Bassets tend to be obedient, but you must train all through their puppyhood ( and a bit during adulthood) to get them to listen to you when they're older. With such a sweet gentle look on its face, it is no wonder that the Basset Hound's personality is sweet and gentle, with a peaceful demeanor that belies the inner strength of this four-legged hunter and tracker. Because their personality is mild, this breed has become one of the most popular family dogs, known for their extreme tolerance. A naturally well-behaved dog, they are the most easygoing of breeds with a good-natured personality. And with such a mild disposition, many individuals take this as timidness in the breed. But its mild personality causes the breed to be very affectionate with its owner, along with children in the family. Fitting well into any family, it is cordial with family pets, children and other dogs.

Beagle

Beagles are happy to rest without being exercised to exhaustion. The Beagle has an even temper and gentle disposition. Described in several breed standards as "merry", they are amiable and generally neither aggressive nor timid. They enjoy company, and although they may initially be standoffish with strangers, they are easily won over.
Beagles are excellent with children and this is one of the reasons they have become popular family pets.
Friendly, playful and eager to please, the Beagle can be willful. Possessed of great stamina, determination and a definite mind of its own, this picturesque and personality-plus little hound has a tendency to roam. Beagles require a well fenced yard and firm, patient handling.

The Beagle is lively, active and extremely intelligent, making a devoted friend and companion. Hardy and resilient, it can be happily kept as either a house or a kennel dog. Beagles have a short, dense, weatherproof coat which comes in many attractive colorings, and requires very little grooming. Beagles tend to keep themselves extremely clean.

Good-natured and steady in temperament, the Beagle has an engaging demeanor which endears it to children and adults alike. A handy size for almost all households, with a handsome appearance and musical voice, the Beagle has something to offer just about everyone.

Irish Wolfhound

The most distinguishing physical feature of the Irish Wolfhound is its great size. Generally breeders aim for a height range of 85 to 90 centimeters (33 to 36 inches) in males, 5 to 10 centimeters (2 to 4 inches) less for females. Generally acceptable weight 46-70kg (101-154lbs).

Irish Wolfhounds are sweet-tempered, patient, generous, thoughtful and can be trusted with children. Dignified and willing, they are unconditionally loyal to their owner and family. Not a guard dog by nature, but may be a deterrent simply due to his/her size.

According to the AKC Standard, the Irish Wolfhound is a dog "Of great size and commanding appearance, the Irish Wolfhound is remarkable in combining power and swiftness with keen sight."

These slightly shaggy dogs are intelligent, good-natured gentle giants with sweet dispositions. Despite their size, they are quiet indoor dogs who thrive on human companionship . They are sensitive, affectionate pets who love everyone in their family .... other dogs, the new kitten ... even the family parakeet. They're especially sweet and responsive to children. They bond easily and become devoted guardians of the children they love.

They do, of course, need lots of space to accommodate their size.

Greyhound

Although Greyhounds are extremely fast and athletic, and despite their reputation as racing dogs, they are not high-energy dogs. They are sprinters, and although they love running, they do not require extensive exercise. Most are quiet, gentle animals. An adult Greyhound will stay healthy and happy with a daily walk of as little as 20 to 30 minutes. Greyhounds have been referred to as "Forty-five mile per hour couch potatoes.

The Greyhound shines as a pet in a quiet household. He is sensitive, easily distracted, and somewhat distressed by noise and bustle. He's good with considerate children past the toddling stage, and he gets along well with other dogs.

The Greyhound is very gentle and sensitive, and makes a wonderful companion to most children. This is also a very talented breed and does well in a number of sports including hunting, sighting, watchdogging, racing, and agility. The Greyhound is an extremely graceful dog that is petite, making him an exceptional running companion. This breed does very well in a home environment, but can also do well in kennel life, although he does crave human attention and desperately wants to be part of the family.

The Whippet

Whippets are generally quiet and gentle dogs, and may be content to spend much of the day resting. Although especially attached to their owners, they are friendly to visitors. They are not prone to snapping, so they are good with young children. Because of their friendly nature whippets are known to have been used in aged care facilities.
Unlike some other breeds, male whippets are as easy to housebreak as females. Male whippets are also as unaggressive as female whippets. Males are sometimes considered to be slightly more loyal and enjoy repetitive play. Females can be a little more complex and strong-willed. Males tend to be one to two inches taller and three to six pounds heavier than females.
Whippets are generally sweet natured family dogs. They are calm in the house but playful with kids outdoors. Their friendly temperament can be easily upset by harsh training or corrections, however. They are good family and companion dogs, but they are very active since they were designed for running.

Afghan Hound

An Afghan in the show ring, demonstrating the unique appearance of its high-maintenance coat. The temperament of the typical Afghan Hound can be aloof and dignified, but happy and clownish when playing. The breed has a reputation among dog trainers of having a relatively slow "obedience intelligence" as defined by author Stanley Coren.
The Afghan Hound, despite it is aristocratic physical appearance is actually a very sweet, loving and playful dog that enjoys human interaction and companionship. They will bond with one or two people in the family and will typically choose to attend to these people rather than responding to commands from everyone. The Afghan Hound is very much like a cat in some aspects of its personality. They need to be able to pick and choose when they want attention and companionship, although this trait will vary greatly between dogs, and males are more aloof typically than females.

Afghan Hound

Bloodhound

This breed is a gentle dog who is nonetheless tireless in following a scent. Because of its strong tracking instinct, it can be willful and somewhat difficult to obedience train. However, with the proper amount of time, effort, and how well you treat it, this can be achieved easily.

Affectionate, gentle, and even-tempered describes a blood hound and they make excellent family pets but, like any large breed, require supervision when around small children because they will knock them over with their bulk. Bloodhounds are also characterized by a stubborn "whats-in-it-for-me?" temperament, a likely cause (in conjunction with their size and propensity for excessive drooling) for the high rate of bloodhounds given up for adoption once full-grown in comparison with other breeds.
Bloodhound is generally easy going, laid back and very gregarious, with a strong strain of tolerance and friendliness. Perhaps no group of dogs exceeds the qualities that the Scenthounds in general offer to families with children. True, there are some challenges to living with a Bloodhound. Just watching the dog get a drink of water can seem somewhat dramatic but the overwhelming love that comes with them makes these prices small indeed to those that know and love this breed.

Bloodhound

Dachshund

Dachshunds are playful, fun dogs, known for their propensity to chase small animals, birds and tennis balls with great determination and ferocity. Many dachshunds are strong-headed or stubborn, making them a challenge to train. Dachshunds may dig holes in the garden. They have a particularly loud bark, making dachshunds good watchdogs. Dachshunds are known for their devotion and loyalty to their owners, though they can be standoffish towards strangers. If left alone many dachshunds will whine until they have companionship. Some dachshunds are prone to separation anxiety and may chew objects in the house to relieve stress.
According to the American Kennel Club's breed standards, "the dachshund is clever, lively and courageous to the point of rashness, persevering in above and below ground work, with all the senses well-developed. The dachshund's current AKC ranking is 6. Any display of shyness is a serious fault.

The Hounds

The hounds are the original hunting dogs, many pre-dating the gun-assisting hunters in their sporting group. There is a great deal of diversity, both behavioral and physical, within this group, a history of hunting assistance often being the only common bond among some of the hound breeds.

In size, they range from the tall and lanky Irish wolfhound to the short-legged dachshund. A hound by origin only, the dachshund might seem to be out of place in this group, as its background as a digger accustomed to chasing foxes and badgers underground would more logically make it a terrier.

For the most part, these breeds originally assisted hunters in the field with either excellent scenting abilities or exceptional speed. Scent hounds such as bloodhounds, beagles and foxhounds have historically aided hunters by following the scent trails left by their quarry. Today the slow, prodding bloodhound is commonly used by law enforcement to track fugitives or missing persons. Some of the oldest breeds of domestic dogs are the speedy sight hounds. Saluki and pharaoh hounds, in particular, can trace their origins back to antiquity. Images of dogs closely resembling these breeds are depicted on the walls of the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs.

Apart from their hunting skills, most hounds make excellent pets. Reliable, sturdy and possessing excellent stamina, they make great companions for adults and children alike.

Even the famous racer, the greyhound, has proved to be a popular family pet. Those seeking one out, however, are cautioned when choosing a dog bred for the racetrack.

    I enjoyed your lens.
My vote has to go for Dachshunds since I own one little red called Dachshund Luke.
He is such fun and loving, but yes he has a loud bark - makes for a compact guard dog :-)
