AKC Hound Group Dogs

This Lensography is an index of all our dog lover gift lenses that featuring the dogs in the AKC Working Group.

Most hound type dogs share the common ancestral trait of being used for hunting. Some use acute scenting powers to follow a trail. Others demonstrate a gift of stamina as they relentlessly run down quarry. Some hounds share the distinct ability to produce a unique sound known as baying. The AKC Hound Dog group has some of the oldest dog breeds currently known to man today.

There are 3 different types of hounds:

Sighthounds - bred to follow fast game (i.e. rabbits, foxes, and other small animals). These dogs are lean, streamlined, with long legs for an efficient stride, and have great eyesight to track and follow their prey. One of the fastest dogs in our group is the Greyhound, capable of running at speeds up to 45 mph.

Scenthounds - bred to follow a scent trail to track game. These dogs have larger nasal passages, longer ears, and lower, sturdier bodies than their sighthound counterparts. They have deeper voices which can be well heard on the hunting trail, and are capable of traveling long distances to follow the scent in the hunt. The Beagle and Basset Hound are two of our group's excellent scent dogs. The Bloodhound is often used to follow the scent of missing persons in an effort to assist in locating them.

Big game hounds - bred to hunt lions, and other large animals. The Norwegian Elkhound and the Rhodesian Ridgeback are this group's big game hound duo.

Martingale Collars - not JUST for Greyhounds anymore

Make your Hound happy with these fun collars!

Martingale Dog collars are also known as Greyhound Collars or Humane Choke Dog Collar. The Martingale Dog Collar was designed for Sighthounds because their necks are larger than their heads and they can often slip out of buckle collars. These collars have gained popularity among many other breed owners in the recent past with many trainers now recommending them instead of choke chains or choke collars. These collars are fitted to the exact size of the dog's neck when the Dog Collar is pulled closed. Properly fitted, the collar will be comfortably loose when not in use.

We will custom make a Martingale Collar for YOUR dog. We have listed some of the fabrics we have, but ANY fabric you find online we will buy and make your collar with. Collars take 2 - 4 weeks to be delivered and we ship flat rate priority mail.

Sizes include:

1 inch width, 1.5 inch width, 2 inch width

Each width is available in the following neck sizes:

XSmall: 12-15 inch
Small: 14-18 inch
Medium: 17-24 inch
Large: 20-29 inch

Bloodhound
The Bloodhound is a large, strong dog. His owner must be prepared to handle him with both respect and discipline. He is one of the kindest and gentlest of dogs. Bloodhounds are intelligent and want to please. The Bloodhound is a member of the Hound Group and was first recognized by the AKC in 1885.

The English Foxhound is a part of the AKC Hound Group and was first recognized by the AKC in 1909.
Greyhound
Greyhounds are as fast as they are smart, as wise as they are loving. This dog loves to run at full stretch; however, is a quiet and dignified family member indoors. He trives on hugs and petting from his family. The Greyhound is a part of the AKC Hound Group.
Harrier
This dog looks exactly like a small English Foxhound, except he doesn't chase foxes - he chases rabbits and hares; so is called the Harrier. He is similar to the Beagle in personality. He needs action and exercise; he can go long distances. Harriers are alert and curious. The Harrier is a part of the AKC Hound Group.
Ibizan Hound

In U.S. PBGVs are referred to as "Petits", in England as"Griffs" or "Roughies" and in Denmark as "Griffs" or "Petits."
Pharaoh Hound
The Pharaoh Hound originated in ancient Egypt. It is thought to have been brought from Egypt by the Phoenicians when they settled on the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Gozo. The Pharaoh Hounds have existed there for over 2,000 years. In Malta they are bred for rabbit hunting and are the national dog of Malta. The Pharaoh Hound is one of the oldest domesticated dogs in recorded history. Intelligent, friendly, affectionate and playful, the Pharaoh Hound is part of the AKC Hound Group.
Plott
The Plott is named after a family of German immigrants who moved to America, and the breed was created in America. The Plott was a mountain breed, raised and trained to hunt animals such as bear and wild boar. The Plott descends from a cross of Hanoverian and the Blevin (a black and tan hound), and the Plott was initially categorized as a coonhound, despite its ability to track and tree big game. Eager to please, loyal, intelligent, alert. Aggressive, bold, and fearless hunter, the Plott is part of the AKC Hound Group.
Rhodesian Ridgeback
The Rhodesian Ridgeback originated in South Africa and is part of the AKC Hound Group. Described as courageous and proud. Dignified, but loving to his family. Also known as the African Lion Hound.
Saluki
The Saluki, royal dog of Egypt, is perhaps the oldest known breed of domesticated dog. Earliest known carvings look more like Salukis than any other breed: they have a Greyhound body with feathered ears, tail and legs. Salukis were first brought into England in 1840 and were known as Persian Greyhounds. Having tremendous speed, the Saluki was used by Arabs principally in bringing down the gazelle. In England, the dog was used largely on hares. The Saluki is part of the AKC Hound Group. Other names for this breed can include Gazelle Hound, Persian Greyhound, Persian Sighthound and Tazi.
