House of Cards - the Sir Francis Urquhart trilogy

Ranked #7,532 in Entertainment, #92,529 overall

About the House of Cards trilogy

The House of Cards trilogy refers to three parts: House of Cards, To Play the King and The Final Cut, which chronicle the rise of the unscrupulous politician Francis Urquhart.

In House of Cards Frances, later Sir Francis, Urquhart is introduced to us as the Chief Whip whose job is to keep all the MPs for his party in line. When he fails to get a cabinet promotion during a reshuffle, Francis decides to use all the information he is privy to and obtain a higher promotion for himself. The further episodes in the trilogy chronicle his further rise to power, and eventual place in history.

When the "House of Cards" trilogy is mentioned, most think of the series and the brilliant portrayal of Urquhart by Ian Richardson, which is what this lens focuses on. The books go in quite another direction, as mentioned below.

House of Cards

The beginning of Francis Urquhart's career

On the Prime Minister's death Francis Urquhart, the Chief Whip, has high expectations. Passed over for promotion to the cabinet as part of the old guard he is furious at the snub, and begins to scheme for a higher promotion than he would otherwise obtain. By manipulating, lying, politicing and even resorting to acts such as blackmail and murder, he swiftly begins to climb the ranks. Francis Urquhart has his eyes set on the top seat and no one will be getting in his way.

To Play the King

A new King spells trouble for the PM

When the Queen dies, Sir Francis Urquhart is less than delighted to discover the new King has his own ideas about how the country should be run. As far as Urquhart is concerned, the King's job is to sit on a throne and wave. Once the King starts speaking to the press, and then to opposition MPs, it becomes very obvious that Urquhart might have a problem.

The royals in the series are obviously modelled on the public perceptions of the Windsor family. However special mention must go to Michael Kitchen, who manages to make the King a man of dignity and compassion, while also being someone believably capable of standing up to the devious Urquhart.

The Final Cut

The end of an era

Sir Francis Urquhart, the Prime Minister, is reaching the end of his career. Looking at stepping down, the vultures are circling. Before he goes however, he wants one last triumph to cement his place in history.

He turns to Cyprus and Turkey, trying to broker a peace accord. However, he has his own dark past on the island; a secret and a history long buried, that could rise up and destroy him.

The Final Cut provides a memorable end to the series, and an unforgettable conclusion to the career and character of Sir Francis Urquhart.

The Books

"House of Cards", "To Play the King" and "The Final Cut"

The book series has little in common with the TV series. Notably, in the books, Francis Urquhart fails.

As he says in his foreword, after writing House of Cards, Micheal Dobbs optioned the rights to the BBC. He was quite surprised when they changed the ending, and more when they came back requesting a sequel. Therefore he wrote "To play the King" where once again, Francis Urquhart loses, and once again the TV producers refused to kill off the character.

Only the Final Cut has similar endings in both book and series, and it is a truly memorable exit for a memorable character and series.
