Fry & Laurie Reunion Watch :: Let Them Talk : Hugh Laurie CD

Welcome to the 2011 Fry on House MD page. With the 30th anniversary of the duo's partnership, a one-off reunion special was broadcast in the UK November 24th, 2010 on UKTV Gold. Check out Hint Watch and add any info you have, too. There are 2010 and 2009 2011 Fry on House MD pages. Links are here.

Video clips from the UKTV reunion show are below. "Now, in Fry And Laurie Reunited, the pair talk exclusively about their friendship, their personalities and talk through some of their favourite sketches. With plenty of clips and rare material, this is the ultimate celebration of two of Britain's favourite sons." -- From UKTV site

We continue to see more is petitions and polls, this page included, contemplating whether Fry will appear on House, if you want to see him on the show, and so forth. On various discussion boards and lists for the program, it remains a topic to discuss. So far, Laurie has been on Fry's program, QI.

The colleagues have discussed working together since the mid-1990s when we last saw A Bit of Fry & Laurie. This page will pick up on Rumor Watch for 2010. Be sure to write and add any new news in the comments section at the end of this lens. The earlier page was getting too long, so here's a fresh page for a fresh year. I appreciate the positive feedback. Hugh Laurie Let Them Talk is now available in the US.

There are a lot of biographical and fan sites online with information on Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry. The pair met while at Cambridge University around 1980, and performed together in the famous Cambridge Footlights comedy troupe.

Hugh Laurie asked his girlfriend, Emma Thompson, to introduce him to Stephen Fry. with Emma Thompson, Fry & Laurie wrote the sketch The Cellar Tapes, which they entered in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. They won the Festival's first Perrier Award. The honor resulted in a tour across England and Australia.

Comedy partners and best friends, the pair has worked together on three famous television shows, Blackadder, Jeeves & Wooster and A Bit of Fry & Laurie.

BBC2 offered a one-off half-hour show called A Bit of Fry & Laurie in December 1987. The first six-part series aired in 1989, with new series in 1990, 1991 and 1995. They have continued to appear together sporadically for one-off charity events and the like. There was a special Y2K episode, Blackadder Back & Forth, part of Black Adder: The Complete Collector's Set.

But fans have been eagerly awaiting the colleagues' big television or film reunion. A 2010 UK Gold TV reunion special celebrated the 30th reunion of their partnership. The duo continue to tease fans about whether or not they will work together or not. Seeing them on the special, video is below, was a real treat.

Will Stephen be in the cast when Hugh's book, The Gun Seller, hits the big screen? Could there possibly be another special chunk of Fry & Laurie sketch shows? The quickest and most expected way we'll see them together, the hints are all over the place, is Fry's making a guest appearance on Hugh Laurie's hit US TV show, House MD.

Speculation as to when and if that will happen has been going on by fans at least from about the time the show premiered! There's at least one petition online to bring the partners back together on House. When will this reunion take place? And do you think they'll publicize it well enough in advance?

This page will be updated regularly. Please comment with any news. Thanks for your participation.

"The two are often found at one another's houses in North London, especially when they are working on A Bit of Fry and Laurie. 'Even if we're not writing the same thing together, we can be in the same room writing separate things together, so we can kind of pull out of the atmosphere of despair.'" Stephen Fry, The Washington Post, December 27, 1993.

"'Hugh is my best friend,' says Stephen. 'That is what is so pleasing about working with each other. We do it because we enjoy it. We make each other laugh. We couldn't do it as a job if we didn't like each other. We see each other a lot in our spare time. Part of the way you write comes from humorous things that happen when you do things together.'

"He adds, 'Working together is our number one priority. We organise our yearly calendar around it. Our commitment to working together comes before accepting other work engagements.'" Daily Express, March 31, 1990.

Fry & Laurie Reunion Nov 24, 2010, 30th Anniversary Show

To mark the thirtieth anniversary of their partnership, a one-off Fry & Laurie reunion was broadcast on UK television. Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie filmed the show which will be seen in the UK on the TV channel GOLD this autumn. It's a 90-minute event, called Fry & Laurie: Re-United, with sketches, reminiscing and special guests.

Fry said, "I am delighted to be given the opportunity to retread the 30 years Hugh and I have known each other and worked together. It was a great joy reminiscing about our times together and I hope GOLD viewers enjoy watching us grow older and older..."

A great quote from the article:

"Hugh Laurie wants you to get rid of your iPod:

"'God bless the radio. I've gone back to the radio, and I've gone back to vinyl because I think there is something slightly corrosive about the whole iPod experience of surrounding yourself with only your favorites.

"'I don't think any of us should be surrounded by our favorite anything. We should, all of us, be brought up against different things, new things, things you've never heard, and the radio is a wonderful way to do that.'"

Fry & Laurie Reunion Special

... They couldn't quite agree on how they'd first met - Stephen Fry opting for a creation myth that involved Emma Thompson and a cheap guitar, while Hugh Laurie thought it had been in Fry's college rooms. However, it happened they were quickly fixtures at Footlights, taking a review called The Cellar Tapes to Edinburgh, where it won the first ever Perrier award. Their rise wasn't effortless, though.

An early show for Granada fizzled, a BBC pilot belly-landed and they found themselves on the outside looking in at the alternative comedy boom, playing a cameo on The Young Ones as the Footlights College University Challenge team. Then successful spots on Saturday Live raised their profile as a partnership.

"The nice BBC people gave us another chance," Fry recalled. "It's what they're there for isn't it," replied Laurie, a quip with a solid centre. The resulting show, A Bit of Fry & Laurie, was described here, apparently straightfacedly, as "one of the most influential comedy series of recent times". Eh?

It was certainly one of the funniest, in my view, but, as Fry went on to point out, the team's insistence that every sketch should be a one-off meant it bore very little resemblance to The Fast Show styles, which immediately followed it.

You could even argue that the sketches were simply too literary to be influential. Whoever heard a playground alive to the sound of Fry and Laurie catchphrases?

In between the mutual teasing and the banter there were hints at the private friendship, most notably when Fry revealed that their only serious row had occurred after he'd snuck off to make a documentary on days when they were supposed to be writing.

When he returned he found that Laurie had written him a reproachful letter including the words "I don't think you know how much I love you". The fact that Laurie didn't offer a reciprocal comment on this incident perhaps tells you something about their discrepant attitude to emotional exposure, though one of the reasons the programme worked was that the pleasure they take in each other's company was so obvious on screen.

And then, finally, it was time for valedictory remarks and a chance for Ben Miller to go wildly over the top again: "They are the alpha and omega of the whole thing," he said. Fortunately, Paul Whitehouse was on hand - like a nettle next to a dock leaf - to add a refreshing sting: "Look," he said in an exasperated tone, "They were on telly once they were funny, right? That's it." That's enough, surely. ...

One of the best comedy series ever to emerge from England, Black Adder traces the deeply cynical and self-serving lineage of various Edmund Blackadders from the muck of the Middle Ages to the frontline of World War I. In his pre-Bean triumph, British comic actor Rowan Atkinson played all five versions of Edmund, beginning with the villainous and cowardly Duke of Edinburgh, whose scheming mind and awful haircut seem to stand him in good stead to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury--a deadly occupation if ever there was one. Among tales of royal dethronings, Black Death, witch smellers (who root out spell makers with their noses), and ghosts, Edmund is a perennial survivor who never quite gets ahead in multiple episodes.

A Bit of Fry and Laurie 1990

A Bit of Fry and Laurie

Bit of Fry and Laurie Audiobook (Canned Laughter)

A selection of sketches from the BBC2 comedy series starring Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie.

This is the first book of scripts (four in all)taken from the phenomenally funny television series by those two glistening golden children of comedy Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. With sketches such as 'spies', 'jeremahiah beadle', and even 'vox pops' that show size isn't everything.

Perfect to read on the train and giggle at causing other passengers to move to another seat, carriage, even train company, so surely this must be a useful bonus to commuters. Tender morsels of comic fulfillment which add a little sunshine to a miserable world.... Maybe this has overrated the book, but perhaps you should buy it to find out for yourselves... -- Amazon

Kindle Edition. British actor and comedian Hugh Laurie's first book is a spot-on spy spoof about hapless ex-soldier Thomas Lang, who is drawn unwittingly and unwillingly into the center of a dangerous James Bond-like plot of international terrorists, arms dealing, high-tech weapons, and CIA spooks.

You may recall having seen Laurie in the English television series Jeeves and Wooster; Laurie played Bertie Wooster, the clutzy hero of the P.G. Wodehouse comic novels that originated those characters. The lineage from Wodehouse's Wooster to Laurie's Lang is clear, and, if you like Wodehouse, you'll probably love The Gun Seller.

"Fans devoted to the master of comic fiction P. G. Wodehouse are legion. He represents a high point in the world of farce and social satire. Best known Bertie Wooster and Jeeves, Wodehouse is appreciated the world over for his exceedingly clever and savvy comedy.
