My dear, you must have read my mind! You see, at this stage of my life, I don't know that I will be able to afford another vacation. Being divorced, I have other priorities ... but the concept of house-sitting truly intrigues me ... can you arrange a gig for me say in France or Spain? ;)
  • CherylK Feb 1, 2012 @ 9:01 pm | delete
Julie, we get notices of housesitting assignments all over the globe and from France most of all! I'm serious...check it out, my friend!
  • ottoblotto Sep 29, 2011 @ 8:38 pm | delete
    What a cool idea!
  • CherylK Nov 29, 2011 @ 2:10 pm | delete
Thanks! It's lots of fun and a great way to travel for very little expense.
  • AsaGislason Sep 8, 2011 @ 6:26 pm | delete
I would love to look after pets but as we have two dogs on our own we might be more likely to look for someone to house / pet sit for us... will definitely be thinking about this!
  • CherylK Nov 29, 2011 @ 1:28 pm | delete
It costs nothing to create a profile at HouseCarers.com so give it a go!
  • AsaGislason Sep 5, 2011 @ 6:02 pm | delete
This is something I would love to try... but would have to bring my own pets!

This is a fantastic guide to housesitting and petsitting. Delighted to leave an ~angel blessing~ here.
  • CherylK Mar 5, 2011 @ 1:51 pm | delete
I'm very grateful for your angel blessing. Thanks so much. We've had a lot of fun housesitting and petsitting and I hope others decide to try it, too.
  • tembrooke Dec 12, 2010 @ 3:43 pm | delete
    Great lens! Blessed.
  • CherylK Dec 12, 2010 @ 9:08 pm | delete
Well, thank you very much for the Squid Angel Blessing! It was so kind of you and much appreciated. Perhaps you'll try house/pet sitting, too, sometime. Pick a place you'd like to visit!
  • Chinajoy Nov 30, 2010 @ 8:57 pm | delete
I am a missionary, and pet sitting/ house sitting is a great way to find places to stay and get paid rather than paying a hotel (unless it is volunteer).
  • CherylK Dec 12, 2010 @ 9:06 pm | delete
Housesitting is great and would be perfect for you. Thanks so much for visiting my page!

Housesitting is great and would be perfect for you. Thanks so much for visiting my page!
  • SueM11 Oct 10, 2010 @ 10:50 pm | delete
House sitting sounds like a very good idea to have free lodging at exotic places. The concept is not common in my country. I am not too sure if I am willing to let a stranger to live in my home even for a short period of time.
  • CherylK Oct 13, 2010 @ 4:03 pm | delete
Thanks for stopping by, Sue. We haven't ever had anyone housesit for us because we haven't any pets and that's the main reason people are looking for housesitters.
  • johnsonartinflux Sep 16, 2010 @ 9:53 am | delete
Hi Cheryl, thanks for writing about housesitting. I have tried all the housesitting websites and have found www.caretaker.org to be the best for housesitting assignments. I recently started using www.caretaker.org and have found two housesitting assignments there so far.
    John
  • CherylK Oct 13, 2010 @ 3:59 pm | delete
That's great, John! Where were your two assignments? Thank you for visiting and for the kind words.
  • johnsonartinflux Oct 13, 2010 @ 4:12 pm | delete
Hi Cheryl, my first housesitting assignment was in Hawaii, and my second housesitting assignment was in mid-town Manhattan (NYC),

Thank you so much for the SquidAngel blessing. We do enjoy housesitting and I hope others will try it, as well.
  • arncyn Jan 11, 2010 @ 3:08 am | delete
I learned so much from this lens, Cheryl. Housesitting is not very common in my country but I can see where the appeal lies. I love pets and I love travelling so it sounds like something I'd be keen to do in the future, when I've retired too. (: Great lens with lots of insights and useful information! *Blessed*
  • CherylK Jan 11, 2010 @ 11:25 am | delete
Thanks so much for the blessing! I'm glad you enjoyed this and would consider doing housesitting, too. As a matter of fact, we're housesitting at this very moment. We're on Bainbridge Island in Washington state. The 3rd or 4th time at this house. We love the two cats and they remember us each time. We have another assignment in April at another house in the same area. Winters are so cold at home that it's nice to get away for a few weeks.
  • WritingforYourWealth Nov 17, 2009 @ 6:13 pm | delete
Since I can work from anywhere, this is something I often thought about doing. Then I got two dogs of my own, heh. I'm not sure anyone would want to hire a petsitter who brought their own pets. ;)
  • CherylK Nov 18, 2009 @ 7:26 am | delete
You could always ask...I'm sure that there are home owners who wouldn't mind if you brought your dogs. Well, not if they had cats, I guess!!!! But it's worth checking out. I think it's great that you can work from anywhere.
  • kiwisoutback Nov 13, 2009 @ 8:11 am | delete
    Well done, Squid Angel blessed!
  • CherylK Nov 18, 2009 @ 7:31 am | delete
Thank you so much for this blessing. I'm very, very grateful. Makes me want to do the very best I can on my pages.

Wonderful lens Cheryl...thanks for sharing. You have given me food for thought.
A Giant Squid style lens...blessed by an angel.

Thank you for the blessing! It's a fun concept and I hope you decide to try it sometime!
  • Tiffany Oct 26, 2009 @ 11:31 am | delete
LOVE this concept. When my kids are grown.. a loooooong time from now, I totally plan to do this.
  • Intuitive Oct 19, 2009 @ 9:33 am | delete
I've heard about this but I've never really known where to start. Great idea and really helpful lens. * (PS...i would have voted for Canada, too.) :)

Thank you very much for the blessing, Kim. This page was so much fun to write because we've had such a wonderful experience with this kind of travel. I always say we get our "pet fix" by house and pet sitting because we love pets but don't have any of our own!
  • KimGiancaterino Oct 2, 2009 @ 10:27 am | delete
When I was single I did housesitting (always with pets) and loved it. Wonderful lens... Blessed by a Squid Angel.
  • CherylK Nov 18, 2009 @ 7:32 am | delete
Thank you, Kim, for stopping by and for the blessing. It really is a fun way to travel as you well know.
  • Pukeko Sep 23, 2009 @ 2:44 pm | delete
We do home exchange, but not with pets. Great idea. Great lens.
  • westof101 Sep 17, 2009 @ 6:06 am | delete
Very informative article on house sitting and pet sitting. I have done both of these and love the independence and the diferent opportunities. Good job!
  • CherylK Sep 10, 2009 @ 11:39 pm | delete
You know, I LOVE Canada and we used to go up to Vancouver or over to Victoria when we were visiting my sisters in Washington state. The main reason I don't have it on our list is because it's COLD there in the winter, isn't it? And we are trying to get away from the cold. [in reply to BigGirlBlue]
  • BigGirlBlue Sep 10, 2009 @ 11:34 pm | delete
I'm disappointed you don't have Canada on your list of destinations. :(

I would feel comfortable having someone watch the house but not so much the pets.
  • sandyspider Sep 8, 2009 @ 9:00 am | delete
    Great ideas!
  • WindyWinters Aug 31, 2009 @ 8:12 pm | delete
Great Lens and Great Info on House and Pet Sitting. My mom's neighbor housesits out of town on the island and she loves it. Love to try it in the future. Sure sounds like a great way to travel. Thanks Cheryl. :)

    great ideas
  • CreativeArtist May 26, 2009 @ 4:39 pm | delete
Wow! We've had people house sit and pet sit before; they were friends and neighbors. Never knew it was a business. I've designed some pet sitting business cards, perhaps I'll add one for houses too.
  • Joan4 May 26, 2009 @ 11:25 am | delete
This is wonderful! A friend of ours did some house-sitting for a while, and loved it! Sending her this link right now! What a great way to see the world! Blessed by an angel!
  • Ramkitten May 15, 2009 @ 9:47 am | delete
Hi, Cheryl! I'm lensrolling ya right back. Had to wait till this a.m. to do it. Housesitting, property caretaking, petsitting--they're great opportunities, both short-term and long. We loved the life and plan to go back to it someday.

  • mulberry May 1, 2009 @ 9:09 am | delete
It's been a long time since I was here, but I wanted to see what's new. This still sounds fascinating. I've known others who've done it. I like the idea of the pets being part of the whole things, makes it more attractive for sure.
  • Snozzle Jan 19, 2009 @ 11:41 am | delete
This is a great idea. We have a friend (I'm in the UK) who has travelled to other countries house and pet sitting including Germany and Cyprus. 5* lens.

    Mike.
  • Tracey_M Nov 26, 2008 @ 1:10 am | delete
I love this lens. Every year my daughters do house-visits (not quite sitting) for pets with owners on holiday. But house-sitting in another country is far more exotic. I love the idea.
  • thrivingmom Nov 16, 2008 @ 5:05 pm | delete
Very interesting lens. I love the idea of housesitting, especially for pet owners so that their pets get to stay in their home while their owners are gone.
  • Susan52 Nov 15, 2008 @ 8:09 pm | delete
Very, very informative. It's a great concept, indeed. Glad it works so well for you!

I am a professional blogger and can work from anywhere with a wifi connection, and I've often thought it would be fun to do exactly what you wrote about here. I have a dog of my own though and I'm not sure strangers would appreciate him moving in, heh. I wouldn't give him up for anything though :)
  • SusanVillasLewis May 9, 2008 @ 3:59 pm | delete
Another idea for my "retirement" pile! Or I'll just call you, Cheryl, when I go galivanting around during retirement. Leaving my house all alone for months on end makes me quite nervous! Great job!

Good information, something to consider for the future!
  • mommmyof2 May 3, 2008 @ 4:06 pm | delete
I am wondering about doing this with children??? Many of the sites I've seen don't mention if that's acceptable or not.

What a great idea! But I'd want my Mum to take me with her - great info! Thanks.

Thanks for that note, Jane Smith. I appreciate your feedback and hope it encourages others to check out the Caretaker Gazette, as well.
  • Jane Smith Feb 21, 2008 @ 11:22 am | delete
Just wanted to let you know that I have used The Caretaker Gazette since the 1980's and have found housesitting assignments all over the world by using their publication.
