Housebreaking Puppies - When should I start to housebreak my puppies?
The straight up answer to this is: As soon as you get your puppy, this is when you start the housebreaking puppies training. Not only does this start your puppy off early to know to not go to the bathroom inside, but it also starts it off to a good structured life of habit. Habit is good for a dog, it lives a very stress free life if it has habits and routines
Interesting little tidbit:
Did you know that once your dog learns when you go to bed (if you go to bed at the same time every night), that it will start telling you that it is time for bed? I know, it's pretty amazing isn't it!
Housebreaking Puppies - Open Crate Training
What is open crate training?
HUH?
Well, what you would do, is have one of those baby gates that block off a certain area right at one of your doors that lead outside. Give it enough room for its food, and toys, and room to roam, as well as a space to do its business. Now, the place you want it to do its business is close to the door, put some newspaper down there so the mess is easy to pick up.
What this will do, is it will train your puppy to go to the door when it wants to do its business. Of course the only way this will work is if you keep close tabs on your puppy, so that when it goes into that area, you jump up, and take it out for a walk right away.

"My husband and I bought 2 of these gates for our new puppy and I love them!! I relish not having to take down a gate or try to step over them (which isn't fun for someone short ;). And this gate is stylish (is that possible? ;). I would recommend this gate to anyone. Yes, it's pricey (I had my doubts), but after a couple of weeks, I love it!!!! Buy it! You can't go wrong!"

Housebreaking Puppies - How many walks did you say?
How many walks should a puppy be taking in a day?
Housebreaking puppies is a lot like when your mom or dad were changing your diapers. Now, your puppy is not going to have a diaper, however, taking it for lots of walks to go to the bathroom is a lot like changing diapers on a baby.
Well, how many times did your mom or dad change your diapers when you were a baby? Many, many times a day I am sure. And taking your puppy for a walk, is like you changing its diaper, and must be done when you are housebreaking puppies.
This will only work if you can take it out every 2 or 3 hours at least.
The first walk would be right when you get up, the 2nd one, about 2 or 3 hours later, and so on and so forth. If you cannot be around your puppy all day because you are at work or what not, then you are going to need a dog sitter or walker.
Your dog sitter/walker will be paid to take care of your puppy throughout the entire day (this is why I called it a sitter). Normally a dog walker will just take your dog for an hour or so, let it get some exercise and do its business, but that will not work for the puppy. It must be walked every 2 or 3 hours.

Housebreaking Puppies - Puppy Crate Training
Now, this is like the open crate training, except this is in an enclosed crate, just big enough for a water bowl, the puppy, a toy, and enough room for it to stand up, and turn around, and sit down.
What is this going to do?
Well, a dog will not do its business where it sleeps, plays, and eats. Now, what you do is you let the puppy for to the bathroom outside before you put the puppy in the crate. You are then out for the day, it has to go, but it has nowhere to go, so it holds it in the best it can. You get home, you let out the puppy, and before you do anything else, you take it outside to relieve itself. Over time, the puppy will get used to waiting, and will only go outside.

We purchased this crate for our Lab. We had a smaller crate as a puppy, but wished we had just bought this one from the beginning. The divider is perfect for growing dogs. An A+ purchase, for sure! The price and shipping time is unmatchable! Don't miss out on this great deal!

Housebreaking Puppies - A Little Tidbit about a puppy and its business
When I lived out in the country, we had 2 dogs. They were awesome guys, however, we did not like them pooping in the main yard. So, when we did, is when it pooped, we would take a shovel, scoop it up, and then put it over the fence in the field (we tried to put it where no one walked).
After about a week or so of doing this, we saw less and less poop in the main yard, and we then noticed that the dogs started to go to the other side of the fence, and do its business there. Eventually, there was no more poop being left in our yard.

Housebreaking Puppies - Should I punish my puppy for its mistakes?
This is a great question. And the answer is not exactly a yes or no.
This is what you do, if you find some accidents, pick it up, and throw it away right away, and clean the area to take out the scent right away. If it was fresh, then take out your puppy/dog right away. Let it finish relieve itself, and go back inside.
Now, if you catch the dog in the act, DO NOT YELL at it, or scream. What you do, is say, in a very commanding voice, to get its attention, NO! And rush up to it, and quickly take it outside. In no way should you rub its nose in it, or hit it in anyway. Just command it to stop (you can use the word stop as well)
