Puppy Training
When you first bring your puppy home I suggest you keep it inside for the short term, as in most cases its going to cry all night.. My preferred place for my puppies is in the laundry where there is no carpet in case of any accidents at night. If your going to let them in your room have a bed they can stay in, don't give in and let them on your bed, if you let them on your bed then expect they will be there every night after that. When training your puppy remember to praise them when they have done something right, and maybe keep some small treats with you and when they are good a small treat can be very effective. Remember not to try and teach your new pup too many things, it will only confuse them. Maybe work on one piece of training at one time, when your pup masters it, then move on to another piece of training.
Another important part of puppy training is to socialize your puppies with other puppies and dogs. In Australia the RSPCA do a great basic puppy training and its good to mix with other puppies. This type of training is train the trainer, they teach you how to do certain things then you go home and teach your dog at home. These days with internet there are many online types of training which can be just as effective, we highly recommend " Kingdom Of Pets" we have tried and tested this method and it well worth the money. Kingdom of pets has been the number one dog training and behaviour site for 4 years. This 6 day training course will get your pup or dog fully house trained. Check the link below

One thing to remember when house training your puppy is that it only has a limited attention span, one minute they will be playing with a toy, the next minute they will be chewing on your furniture or anything the can find in reach. So put away the valuables out of reach to save any serious damage. That where its good to have toys for your pup to play with squeaky toys are great through the day, but can get a bit annoying through the night, so maybe take that off them at night.
There is no point in telling a dog off if you don't catch them in the act, its pointless and wont achieve anything. Remember when telling off a naughty pup that a light smack on the backside is enough, puppies have fragile bones and will only cause permanent damage. We always give our puppies calcium supplements with their food it helps strengthen their young bones.
Dog Toilet Training
This is one of the most important parts of House Training Dogs, many people make mistakes when toilet training dogs. One thing you should never do is rub there face in it, It wont achieve anything really. What i have found is the best method is Newspaper training your pup or dog. I suggest where ever your dog is inside you have newspaper in a large area, when they go to the toilet on it then you praise and reward your dog. Then begin reducing the size of your newspaper area. Once you have your dog going to the toilet on the newspaper then have some inside and also outside and make sure your dog can get outside, when they go on the newspaper outside make sure you have a special reward and praise them for going outside. Then finally remove the newspaper from inside and only have a small area outside, then your on your way to house training your dog.I have found that when your puppy has eaten its meal, take it outside, as its not going to be long before they go to the toilet. I highly recommend you take your dog outside twice every hour, and spend some time with them, don't just let them go outside alone, as you wont know if they have been to the toilet, and then you will have missed a great chance to praise and reward your dog. This is a vital part of house training your dog. The more time you can play with your dog outside the more chances you have got of training your dog to go to the toilet outside. Don't be angry with them if they make an mistake here and there, as that's just normal of teaching a dog where you want it to go to the toilet
Very Important to remember puppies only have small bladders, and they will go more than once an hour, so the more you can take them outside they will start to learn where they should be going to the toilet. If you can try and take your puppy to a spot where they have been to the toilet outside before, so they can smell where they have been. If they have been on the newspaper inside make sure you clean the paper up straight away and mop the area with a lemon flavoured disinfectant, as dogs don't like the smell of lemon. You will need to do these things for at least 7 days as the more times your dog understands where they should be going to the toilet the better. Also after your dog has been to the toilet in the wrong spot, tell them "NO" when you catch them doing it, and then take them outside and put them on a spot they have been to outside. then tell them "Toilet" Or "Wee Wee" the more you do this the better. Remember with dogs to take them out for the toilet before you go to bed and first thing in the morning when you wake up. You will find they start to hold onto it until they wake up, so no sleeping in with a puppy in the house. I have also found that female dogs are much cleaner than male dogs, the female for some reason likes to go in a similar spot in your garden.
Dog Barking
Dog barking is a very difficult thing to stop. In some cases a citronella collar may be needed to stop your dog from barking for no reason. When your dog is barking the first thing to look for is your dog wagging its tail, then your dog is just playing. If your dogs tail is stiff and rigid then your dog is serious about what its barking at. Sometimes your neighbours cat might be teasing your dog by sitting on the fence. Or maybe another dog is on the other side of the fence. You need to tell your dog firmly "NO" and when they stop then you reward them, repeat these steps a few times to get the best results. You dont want your dog not to bark at all, maybe if they sense someone is in your yard then let them bark at that, and reward them if they stop after that person has gone, but be careful not to over reward any barking dog. Sometimes your dog will bark when your at work or out for dinner. This might annoy your neighbours. The best thing to to with this is ask your neighbours when they complain to look over the fence and see what your dog is barking at. One time i had kids in the house next door throwing things at my dogs and teasing them, so no wonder if they are barking then. Some breeds of dogs will bark more than others, so that means you need to do more training than most.
I try to teach my dog to only bark if they need to, whether someone unknown is at the house, and your dog can smell them, then your dog is just more likely to scare off burglars, they might think going to the next house might be better. But when my dog barks for no reason then tell them "NO" and reward them when they stop. Some dog breeds will howl all night if your not home, these dogs you may need to get a citronella collar. You can see in the picture what happens with them when your dog barks is sprays citronella in your dogs face to deter them from repeat barking.

Secrets to Dog Training - Stop your Dog's Behavior Problems! What Is It?
Secrets to Dog Training presents an unusually detailed and thorough look at how to both prevent and deal with the more common problem behaviors exhibited by dogs. As the owner of a moderately troublesome mutt myself, I've spent a fair amount of time searching the Net for reliable resources on this topic, and I have to say that the level of knowledge and detail contained within the pages of this compendium is unusually exacting for an online book.
Not only that, but - again, unusually for this medium - the information at hand is actually (gasp!) reliable. Yes, that's right - this one's a whole new kettle of fish. Written by a seasoned dog trainer, you can relax in the knowledge that all the tips and advice included are tried and true, and come from Stevens' real-life experiences as a professional dog trainer. There is also a straight-talking, easy to follow 30-minute downloadable video which provides real-life examples of doggy bad behavior along with solutions and remedies to change them.
What's Covered?
There's a pretty impressive range of information packed into this guide. It's not just the problem behaviors that are covered: the book starts off with new-owner advice (how to choose a puppy/dog, the best places to get one from, breed information, puppy/dog-proofing your home, the first vet visit, housetraining, etc) and then moves on to the more advanced stuff: behavioral problems (such as aggression, dominance, chewing, digging, excessive barking, separation anxiety, to name a few), intermediate-level obedience commands, health-related dog problems (allergies, cat/dog coexistence, fleas, heatstroke, and so on), and advanced commands and tricks.
The 30-minute downloadable video gives a great insight into a dog's quest to be the alpha dog and how you can prevent this. Its quick steps to stop bad behaviors such as housebreaking right through to leash pulling are so simple you can start trying them out on your dog straight away.
Particularly Good Parts
In addition to the contents listed above, there's also a pretty impressive section on dog whispering, which - in case you haven't heard of it already - is a method of dog training based on a philosophy of clear communication and mutual respect. It's been popularized in recent years by Cesar Millan ("The Dog Whisperer"), and is becoming increasingly well-known as an alternative and humane method for disciplining and training your dog. Secrets to Dog Training has dedicated an entire section to dog whispering: Daniel Stevens explains the background of the technique, how to utilize voice and body language to your best advantage, and how to use the technique to calmly, assertively, and effectively correct and train your dog. Step-by-set instructions are included for the common commands (sit, down, come, stay, quiet, etc).
It makes for some pretty interesting reading - and, after trying out the basics on my own recalcitrant pooch, I was amazed at how effective the techniques suggested are. Highly recommended!
I Love Freebies (Who Doesn't?)
There's just something about getting something for nothing. And, although my magpie-like acquisitiveness may have led me into less-than-productive purchases in the past, in this particular case I'm happy to report that Secrets to Dog Training hasn't let me down: the freebies included with this book are not only numerous, they're actually useful(wow!)
The book itself costs $39.95. For this price, you get a complete and detailed manual on training your dog, preventing and handling behavioral problems, and a whole bunch of general-knowledge tips and advice.
You also get a handful of practical freebies: four bonus books, dealing respectively with advanced housetraining how-to's and troubleshooting (including both the crate- and paper-training methods); a detailed study on resolving canine aggression; how to effectively groom your dog (including information on coat care for specific breeds, dental care, and nail-clipping how-to's); and finally, how to begin training your dog for security work.
As mentioned earlier, there is a bonus 30-minute downloadable video which takes a no-fuss approach to practical solutions for dog obedience issues.
Another particularly useful freebie: a personalized consultation with a member of the Kingdom of Pets team. If you've got an issue with your dog that you'd like some individual attention on, you can flick them a quick email and receive a personalized, thorough reply packed with expert advice and practical tips.
Secrets to Dog Training: A Thumbnail Sketch
Altogether, I'm pretty impressed with this package. I've owned dogs on and off my whole life, starting from when I was ten - I would have thought that I was better-prepared than most to handle the quirks and caprices of my canine friends.
But since reading this book, I think my pre-Secrets to Dog Training self was (embarrassingly) perhaps a trifle more complacent than knowledgeable - I've learned more since reading this manual than I've picked up in a near-lifetime's worth of contact with dogs (do you know how to stop your dog from tugging on the leash, without using a check-chain? Well, I do - but until I got my hands on a copy of this book, I certainly didn't!)
Several of the training techniques present a refreshingly common-sense, down-to-earth approach to dog training; others require a little more effort (take dog whispering as an example) but yield some pretty dramatic results. I liked the way that more than one training technique is detailed, to allow the reader to pick and choose the techniques that best suit themselves and their individual dogs.
I have no qualms in recommending this package to anyone who owns, or is thinking about owning, a dog. You don't need to have a "problem pet" for the manual to be of assistance: there's information included that'll be useful to any and all dog owners.
In a nutshell: highly recommended.
