I love this lens. It made me crack up. I do the kitchen karaoke thing too, and Iove The Temptations. Those micro fibre dustmop slippers and timer are a good idea.

Wonderful article and very deserving of the Purple Star and LOTD! I think the micro fiber slippers are very tempting. Just may have to get a pair for wearing in summer especially. :)

My mom had us do cleaning games when I was a kid, and I still do them. I didn't realize that anyone else did! Nice lens. Thanks for sharing.

i like listening to music when i clean too...makes time pass faster ^_^
  • robert2704 Apr 4, 2012 @ 8:06 pm | delete
Another thing that I couldn't be without is a paper shredder. With the amount of junk mail that comes in it's handy to have just to fire through the shredder and minimize the clutter.

The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is a lifesaver!
  • twisted-barfly Mar 27, 2012 @ 9:59 am | delete
Hahaha, I love the idea of Kitchen karaoke. If I'm cleaning the houe I have to either have on some choons OR - and this is really bad - have the laptop perched close by so I can watch something on iPlayer/catch up. I simply CANNOT clean the house without some form of distraction/entertainment!
  • Celticep Mar 22, 2012 @ 5:11 am | delete
Wow great ideas! Thanks for sharing :)
  • snowy12 Mar 17, 2012 @ 5:51 am | delete
Great tips. I like listening to music or my favorite songs while cleaning the house. This help me to have some enjoyment while doing housework.

Making it sounds fun makes it sound better to clean. :)
  • CNelson01 Feb 29, 2012 @ 12:58 pm | delete
Some helpful ideas here. I like to wash dishes as I cook so that when dinner's ready all the cooking gear is cleaned and put away. It's possible to was and stir fry at the same time if you're fast.
  • flicker Feb 28, 2012 @ 2:39 pm | delete
Thank you so much for the wonderful cleaning tips. I read every word!
  • jasmineann Feb 28, 2012 @ 2:14 pm | delete
Yes music while cleaning is the way to go ! Not sure I truly enjoy cleaning but I do like the results so try to make it as fun as possible :) Great suggestions, love this page :)
  • bekat Feb 12, 2012 @ 12:08 pm | delete
I seriously want some of those mop shoes - them and the B-52s and I'll be getting in shape while I clean. I also grinned when I read your idea of the karaoke with dance moves while doing the dishes. Love love love this lens!

This is my idea of a great Squidoo lens. Lots of wonderful information, humor, product reviews that are really valuable. Appreciated and Squid Angel Blessed!
  • Frischy Feb 8, 2012 @ 8:44 am | delete
You have some great suggestions here. I like keeping duplicates of cleaning supplies and tools in the bathrooms and different levels of the house. There is nothing worse than being in the middle of a job and finding out something you need is all the way upstairs. I do the same with office supplies. When I need tape or scissors, I don't want to have to go to another floor to get it.
  • Susan52 Feb 8, 2012 @ 8:57 am | delete
Keeping cleaning supplies (and office supplies) on each level of the house is such a good idea. When I finally actually put cleaning supplies in both bathrooms instead of carrying a tote back and forth, both bathrooms got cleaned a lot more often. Thanks for the tip!
  • ldgraham Feb 6, 2012 @ 11:54 am | delete
Absolutely loved this one!! And I thought I was the only one who turned up the music when I clean house! Also loved the declutter section. We recently moved and I have been throwing things out as I get it unpacked. I figure if I haven't seen it in three months, I probably won't miss it in another three!
  • shauna7084 Dec 30, 2011 @ 9:01 pm | delete
Love this lens. Wish my mother had instilled some of this in me as a child. Maybe it would make it easier now... Maybe :) That's probably debatable.
  • aesta1 Dec 2, 2011 @ 9:06 am | delete
Suitcases and beds are my usual places for clutter. Love to keep most things instead of throwing them out.

  • WordCustard Nov 10, 2011 @ 2:23 am | delete
So many great ways to make house cleaning fun! I'm going to have to try some of them. Like you, I'd love one of little robot floor cleaners, but until I get one I'll try having fun with some music and a timer. Thanks for the decluttering tips too. Oh and I get to give this great lens its 300th like, yay! :)
  • WriterJanis Nov 2, 2011 @ 12:35 pm | delete
You have some really good ideas here. I love using incentives with my kids to get cleaning done around here.
  • beckyf Oct 29, 2011 @ 3:50 pm | delete
    Love your lens!
Don Aslett's book, "Clutter's Last Stand", taught me how to declutter many years ago. I highly recommend his books to anyone who wants to declutter their home.
  • Susan52 Oct 30, 2011 @ 8:34 am | delete
Thanks for that personal recommendation, Becky!
  • suneclipsea Oct 28, 2011 @ 11:37 pm | delete
and one lady tought me a funny song when i was a kid for house chores. it goes:

"Doing the dishes is fun to do, fun to do, fun to do,
Doning the dishes is fun to do to do to do to do"

and then instead of doing the dishes you can put: washing the windows, cleaning the floor, washing the dirty socks and whatever else you are doing.

10 years later still helps me to make fun of house chores :)
  • Susan52 Oct 29, 2011 @ 7:54 am | delete

I like this lens a lot! I tell the girls that housekeeping is mere responsibility, we do things we don't like to do things we do like, like living in a clean house. I am always looking for ways to make it fun though, and I will have to try the timer.

It's amazing what we can do when we take a moment or two to look at something from a different, more positive, perspective. It's not always easy to do, but it's a must if we're going to power through those less than desirable tasks such as house cleaning!
  • LaraineRose Oct 12, 2011 @ 4:10 am | delete

I used the magic erase this weekend. It worked surprisingly well for some lines on the wall, but turns out it is not magical ;)
One other thing is that it breaks down easily - I consider it almost a one-time use item

clean less frequently...seriously...at least in the US i feel like people go overboard...a few germs will help your immune system...when i was traveling, the people who got the sickest were the people who always carried around their hand sanitizers
  • hysongdesigns Oct 1, 2011 @ 1:31 am | delete
Love the skunk; that's cute, but I love my feather dusters. Now if they made it into a toilet brush..... I think you must be a Flybaby! I'm having to use my timer to get me away from the computer, 15 minutes on, then get up and do a chore, repeat till the list is finished!
  • Close2Art Sep 30, 2011 @ 7:27 pm | delete
I've used the timer method and it works great, lots of cool gadgets and really neat items for cleaning, I work from home so I do most of the cleaning, thanks for sharing this info...:)RWJR

A friend of mine with kids told me about the Magic Eraser - and it is amazing. I used it to clean the scuffs and scrapes from the walls after moving...and again when I decided to rearrange the furniture.

I also like Tip#1 about hiring help - best thing I've ever done for myself (necessary at the time, post-surgery). I still follow a schedule (or am getting back to it), but she's professional, and I adore her (and my clean sparkly house when she's finished). Plus, she does the house in 1/4 of the time it takes me. I still watch her in amazement.

Thanks for the great tips as I get back into the swing of cleaning.

Susan, couldn't help myself, must add this quote: "My idea of house cleaning is to sweep the room with a glance!" Ok, maybe I'm a little better housekeeper than that :o) Just love that quote.

okay this is embarrassing but I'll tell you. I have been using my regular socks too keep my feet warm and to hopefully pick up some of the dirt as I walk around. Well they are not your microfiber slippers that you show here but regular socks. Consequently they become filthy and I have to throw them away after I wear them because my house is, well not as clean as it should be. I will have to get myself those microfiber slippers! Thanks for the tip!

Good job, but I am just not a housework lover...no matter what. I used to kid that my method was to run a bulldozer through the rooms once every six months. What the bulldozer didn't get, the flamethrower would.
In reality it was never that bad, but any little tip I can get to make housecleaning a little easier is always appreciated. BTW Microfiber cloths are great!

The Walmart brand of the Mr. Clean Erasers works just as well and saves lots of money....I would have never used these, but I received one in the mail free...tried it on everything including the grease on the car outside that was being worked on...it is great, but do be careful when cleaning shiny painted things as it can take the protective shine coat off. Great for hard to clean pans in the kitchen and soap scum in the bathroom. I absolutely keep these in my home now! Great lens. Congratulations on LOTD.

Congratulations on LOTD! Well-deserved. Have been thinking of you recently and praying you are recovering well from the fire.

Oh, Aunt Susan, my most productive cleaning is when I'm upset, for some reason. It takes my mind off of the negative stimuli. But the timer stuff really does work!

    Congratulations on TLOD!!

I've discovered housework is harder when you find yourself living alone because the 'motivation' is lacking. But, I do like an uncluttered, clean look, and your ideas here are very helpful. And, at least one person doesn't make 'quite' as much of a mess as a whole family! :) Congrats on LotD for this excellent group of household hints.

Each time I read one of your lenses, I get another really super example of how to "do it right", meaning how to write a good, creative, out of the box article that serves a great many people. Thanks for a great article, and thanks for all the terrific and different ways you look at the world. (And specifically, for this lens, the different ways to approach cleaning to make it fun!)
  • KimberlyDawnWells Sep 29, 2011 @ 8:34 am | delete
This lens made me all teary with pride. Susan, we're cleaning twins! The timer, Mr. Clean Erasers, dusting slippers - all stuff I have and use. Ah, it's a match made in the cleaning aisle... ;) I will say that for dusting I now ONLY use the microfiber rags. It's so easy to wipe everything down and toss the rag in the wash. Nothing gets pushed around, there are no chemicals or weird polishes being used, it's just perfect. Nicely done!
  • happynutritionist Sep 29, 2011 @ 8:31 am | delete
Yahoo! I see this on the squidoo home page as LOTD:-) Congrats to one of my favorite Squids. I have reminders set in my cell phone to do chores or whatever around the house, it's been a great help to get that off my mind and onto something else, and just "do what I'm told" when the alarm goes of. Monday I what Flylady calls the "home blessing" list of tasks set in the phone, and get done with a freshening up of the whole house is an hour...but it goes so fast, doesn't feel like an hour. I have done that for months and it's taken such a load off...love your choice of music!
  • ModernChakra Sep 29, 2011 @ 8:20 am | delete
This is awesome! As a lot of people have already said, Thanks for the hard work! The article was the perfect mix of product recommendation and personal insight and refreshing to find in a world of articles that almost always lean to heavily on the product recommendation part trying to score a buck instead of informing the reasons. Though not my usual genre to share I am going to face and twitter it, because let's be honest... who doesn't want motivation to clean!?!?
  • iwrite4cash Sep 29, 2011 @ 8:10 am | delete

Congratulations on LOTD. Housework is necessary, but with a very messy husband I have to use the threat of company to keep it clean longer than 5 minutes. I have learned to pick my battles.
  • Thimblepod Sep 29, 2011 @ 7:02 am | delete

  • Susan52 Sep 29, 2011 @ 8:48 am | delete
You know what, Thimblepod? I've discovered that they're available in larger sizes for the men - and smaller sizes for the kids! (Thanks for the comment!)
  • sidther Sep 29, 2011 @ 6:33 am | delete
Congrats on LOTD! I also have the pink slippers and they work wonderfully on the mounds of dog hair in between my daily sweeping (I think the dog has a problem).

I totally agree with you on the a place for everything and everything in its place part. Another one of my mottos is "It is better for my house to be full of dust and filled with love than spick and span but cold and lonely." My excuse for not doing housework. ;) Congrats on LOTD.
  • aj2008 Sep 29, 2011 @ 5:14 am | delete
One of my daughters is a Virgo - they believe in "a place for everything and everything in its place". Now if only I can persuade her that it applies to the whole house instead of just her room......

Some great tips here Susan and congratulations on getting Lens of the Day :)

  • LisaAuch Sep 29, 2011 @ 2:56 am | delete
Okay I want the slippers too! oh and the timer....great ideas here! my daughter is actually very good at helping round the house, and she has her set chores, which if not done does not get out to play! (now that motivation!) This helps me as we work as a team to get the house done, worst is because I work at home, so it was hard to try ot get into a proper routine! Organisation is key to keep on top of it. Well done on a fabulous LotD

The thing about housework is that it always returns. Always. But...you are right! Half the battle is attitude & the other is using the right tools and organizing so I don't have to always search for important items. This is a great lens! Wish I'd had the tips 30 years ago. Congrats on LOTD - very deserving!

  • serenity4me Jul 10, 2011 @ 11:47 am | delete
I like your 15 minute challenge! That should be easy enough for everyone to do. I also, love the pink microfiber shoes! How crazy is that?

I like to listen to Josh Groban, James Blunt or Carolina Liar on the bose. I crank it up nice and load and clean til my hearts content.
  • ChrissLJ Jun 12, 2011 @ 8:47 am | delete
I so want those pink slippers. Cleaning's not my favorite pass time, but I do love getting out my little Shark hand held steamer. I can spritz the painted walls, tile, appliances, etc., and the grime comes off without any scrubbing. (I like to pretend I'm a Ghost Buster carrying the steamer around. "I ain't afraid of no grime!") =0)
  • TravelingRae Jun 11, 2011 @ 1:37 pm | delete
Nice try; I'm never going to find cleaning fun. But this is a very good lens! You have some great trips and you've convinced me to try out the microfiber slippers. I think they will cut down on pet hair on the floor.

As soon as I came here, "Whistle While You Work" stared going through my mind. So, you are in the same mind frame as the 7 Dwarfs, cool. Right now I'm going through things getting ready to hopefully move to Kabetogama some time this year. I thought I was pretty well organized at one time but with Squidoo, things so get put aside, My Dad was a great one for "A place for everything and everything in its place, it is a time tested strategy that sure does work. Wonderfully done and encouraging, we all need encouragement and fun is the best way to ensure we'll get something done. Put on the music and dance that housework away!
  • BalanceByDesign Mar 5, 2011 @ 8:50 pm | delete
Loved this lens! I don't know why I haven't been using 60's rock n roll to clean by-it would certainly liven things up and I'd probably get a little exercise, too! And I love the mopping slippers.
  • crucialmusic Mar 2, 2011 @ 2:48 am | delete
A great ense BUT I'm an unconvinced male (even with those pink slippers) ! Sorry ....... .......I'd rather be in the garden especially now that spring is in the air

  • Carmel_Aaron Sep 25, 2010 @ 11:01 am | delete
Girl-----I like the way you think.

I am not good with cleaning and de-clutter, but,

when I do it I might as well have a little fun while I am working at it. Of course I always have my music on and dance around the house, cleaning or not.

    Great lens--thanks
  • susannaduffy Sep 21, 2010 @ 1:30 am | delete
Housework is rarely fast - and never fun. I hate it. That said, it's something we all have to do and the best way to approach it is to run through as fast as possible, listen to music as we clean, in other words grin and bear it.
  • luvmyludwig Jan 11, 2010 @ 8:42 am | delete
I want those floor cleaning slippers. Since I watched pipi longstocking as a kid I have loved the idea of this. Even tried it as a kid, but that's a whole other lens :)

    great job!
  • CherylK Nov 21, 2009 @ 8:04 am | delete
Great lens, Susan. I really do clean the kitchen as I go and when I cook or bake I really do put my ingredients away as I use them. I like the idea of hiring someone to leave more time for Squidooing but with just two of us in the house, it's a little too indulgent...oh well.
  • theraggededge Sep 3, 2009 @ 1:57 pm | delete
Oh I came to read your Nurturing Imagination lens and got sidetracked by this one! Going to lensroll it to "I Hate Housework".
  • DeboraR Jun 14, 2009 @ 11:46 pm | delete
Great lens on cleaning but I do hate housework with a passion! I did however, like the timer idea. I've always had back pain when I would sweep my floors so I'll have to get a pair of those slippers and it would also be a good leg exercise as well!
  • AndyPo May 20, 2009 @ 1:16 am | delete
    Great advice.
  • Pastiche May 15, 2009 @ 10:30 am | delete
Hey, Susan, bring your slippers over to my house - you can glide around every day and still find more fun in our home (2 cats, a woodstove and a man who can't remove his shoes/boots 20 times a day as he works inside and outside the house). I may just get myself some of those pink wonders. Great tips in this lens, and fun!
  • JaguarJulie Apr 25, 2009 @ 12:21 pm | delete
OK -- finished MY portion of the housework awaiting hubby to return from his golf! Yeah, he told me to be sure and take the shop vac to the patio before he got home and be sure to do the laundry. HEY! What's wrong with this picture??? Oh -- just spiffied up the rooms on that lens! More to come. ;)

GREAT LENS! The slipper Genie totally cracks me up but is a good idea. My kids would even have fun with that one, and they are all boys. You've done a great job on your lens overall. I love the use of all your modules and I can learn a lot from you. With a smile~ tina

Make it fun? Make it fun? You're welcome to pop over anytime and have fun in my house. I don't have dustmop slippers but I have a strong and trusty straw broom, a feather duster and plenty of damp sponges. At least I think I do, I can't remember where I put them.
  • JaguarJulie Jan 14, 2009 @ 8:36 am | delete
Hmmm, housework fun -- my dear me thinks that is an oxymoron for sure! Since finding Squidoo, there is NO time for housework or dusting -- hence housework has lots its fun for me. Oh, it is fun though when hubby vacuums!
  • sparklenz Jan 9, 2009 @ 5:34 pm | delete
Great lens, 5 stars! Susan you are so right, housework definitely needs a fun injection... I listen to an audio book for those longer jobs that take awhile, like cleaning out a closet or getting through that enormous pile of dishes in the sink. Listening to a story definitely makes the time go quickly. I also love using my new bright pink cordless upright vacuum cleaner - an Ergorapido - so those dust bunnies have a much shorter life span than they used to! All I need now is a pair of those cleaning slippers... :-)
  • Graceonline Dec 31, 2008 @ 12:55 pm | delete

Great tips! Love the feng shui style philiosophy. I used to have a big problem with clutter. I spent soooo much time, reading and studying different methods of organizing and whatnot. I like your lens because it reminds me of some of the cool articles and books I've read on the subject. I think the part about having proper storage containers is key. Keep it up.
