Setting Up A Juvenile Sulcata Tortoise Terrarium

Getting Your Sulcata Tortoise Terrarium Started

Sulcata Tortoise Terrarium

There are several things to keep in mind when you are setting up a terrarium for a juvenile Sulcata Tortoise . Placement of each area is key to keeping the Sulcata Tortoise happy and healthy. Having warm and cool spot in the tank are also necessary. Furthermore, there is a need for a basking light as well as warmth, which are obtained from to different sources. Basically what I do is separate the tank into two sides. A warm side and a cool side. On the warm side, I place the basking light in one corner and the heating pad in the other corner on the same side. I place the "home" or "cave" in between the two areas. As the Sulcata Tortoise grows, it will often move "furniture" around in the cage to where it wants. Sometimes they are just playing, but other times I wonder if they are actually doing some rearranging.

On the other side of the tank I try to keep the water dish and food bowl, along with any other accessories that I might have for the Sulcata Tortoise. A small branch with a bell on it is always fun. This encourages the Sulcata Tortoise to play, and keeps the feeding and play areas separate from the basking and sleeping areas. It also helps keep the water and food from getting gross. Frequent washing of these two items is important though, because they are likely to grow salmonella and tortoises can transfer this to humans.

Now lets get to building!

Building A Juvenile Sulcata Tortoise Terrarium

A Safe Home For A Baby Sulcata Tortoise

  • 1Okay so first, pour your bedding into the cage, and make sure it is about 4 to 6 inches. This will leave enough room for a small tortoise to begin a small burrow.
  • 2Second you will need to place the water bowl. I like to sink my water bowl into the dirt, making it easier for the tortoise to drink from as well as crawl in and out of.
  • 3Third you will need a light source. Place this wherever is the most convenient, but where it points light in one general area.
  • 4Fourth you will need to place the heater under the cage (as opposed to inside of it). It is important that their needs to be cool spots in the cage for the tortoise to escape the heat in case it gets too hot. Evaluate where your lamp is, and place the heater in an alternative spot next to the light so that the rest of the cage is cool.
  • 5Lastly you need an area away from the heat where you can feed your tortoise. If you place the food under the heat, it will wither faster and go bad, and grow bacteria.

How Do You Know Your Sulcata is Ready to Move Outside?

Is My Sulcata Tortoise Ready To Move?

tortoise outside

Obviously your Sulcata Tortoise cannot live in a tank forever. It will grow to the size of the habitat you give it actually. One thing I always keep in mind, is that it is only temporary to house Sulcata Tortoise inside. My Sulcata Tortoise was only inside for two years from the time I got him. Tortoise care is actually much easier once you are able to move the Sulcata Tortoise outside. It is absolutely vital to their health to move them outside as early as possible. There is nothing better for a Sulcata Tortoise than natural sunlight. So how do you know when your Sulcata Tortoise is ready to be moved outside?

You will know your Sulcata Tortoise is ready to live outside when several things happen.

✔Your Sulcata Tortoise outgrows his 100+ gallon tank.
✔Your Sulcata Tortoise's shell is about a foot long, about 6-8 inches wide, and stands 4-6 inches tall.
✔Your Sulcata Tortoise is able to burrow.
✔Your Sulcata Tortoise is healthy.
✔Your Sulcata Tortoise eats and excretes regularly.
✔Your Sulcata Tortoise's habitat is built and free from hazards.

Ants Are Serious Predators To The Sulcata Tortoise!

Never leave your juvenile tortoise unattended outside for long periods of times. Ants can attack and kill a juvenile Sulcata Tortoise.

Housing an Adult Sulcata Tortoise

Things To Keep In Mind For A Sulcata Tortoise

Housing an Adult Sulcata

Housing an adult Sulcata is definitely easier than a baby one. However there are a number of things to consider. Your tortoise is going to grow into its habitat. A backyard is significantly larger than a tank, so the first couple of months are going to be crucial. You can expect your tortoise to grow double the size within the first month outside. You also need to consider that the tortoise is going to burrow. You want to make sure that your yard is secure and that your tortoise does not dig out of your yard.

How to Build Your Sulcata Tortoise Habitat

Make A Great Home For Your Sulcata Tortoise

I suggest making a habitat enclosure inside your yard, rather than letting it roam the yard freely, until they are just too big to escape yard. Over the past year or two you will have had your tortoise, you will have noticed certain trends about where your tortoise likes to hide and dig, eat, sleep and poop. Taking these into consideration, as well as considering shade, and burrowing, you can embark on your habitat creation.

  • 1First dig a trench about 18 inches deep around the enclosure you plan to build. This can be the size of your choosing as long as there is enough room for your tortoise to grow and romp around.
  • 2Inside of the trench you can place bricks, so that your tortoise cannot burrow under it and come back up on the other side. Also, build a small wall around the enclosure that is at least twice the height of the tortoise. You may have to redo this several times, because as the tortoises grow, they get stronger, and I have had them break many fences. A good tip, is to create the enclosure near your house and use one of your walls as the wall of side of the enclosure. More often than not, the tortoise will burrow under the house.
  • 3Make sure there are plenty of weeds and grass in the enclosure as this is the main source of a tortoises diet. You can also add hibiscus and other plants that Sulcatas like as well. Tortoises like to hide under Hibiscuses when they are not eating or sleeping.
  • 4You will need to make sure there is shade for the tortoise as well so making the enclosure near a tree or other shady source would be good. My tortoises like mulberry leaves, so I have several large mulberry trees in my yard. They cannot graze on the tree however, they do eat the leaves as they fall onto the ground.
  • 5Make sure that if you have a pool in your yard that it is sufficiently fenced off as a tortoise can try to drink from it, fall in, and drown. They do not swim, or float sadly, so will not survive a swim in the pool.
  • 6Make sure to rid your yard of harmful plants as well. Even though the Tortoises seem to have a natural sense built in to not eat things that are bad for them, sometimes, curiosity gets the best of them.
Important!

The Most Important Thing

You should be careful when adding other elements to the cage, such as a shelter. A tortoise will climb whatever is in there cage, and it is not uncommon for them to flip onto their backs by accident. A tortoise cannot right themselves, and this will eventually lead to suffocation and death.

You should check on your tortoise often to make sure this does not happen.

  • WHPFord Mar 16, 2011 @ 4:55 pm | delete
In short, you can't. If you need to keep the tortoise outside of your house it will have to be either the garage (with a really good heat lamp on a thermostat) or construct a heated shed in the back yard for the tortoise. If going the shed route it needs to be person sized so you can physically go in to take care of cleanup (removing a roof would be too cold even for a short time. We are currently using the garage but will probably build a shed later...even in texas it is too cold to leave the tortoise outside during the winter.
