How I discovered Squidoo
I believe I first heard about Squidoo on the eBay Stores Discussion Board on eBay, where I am somewhat of a regular poster. Always looking for new ways to generate traffic to my eBay store, I created my first lens on August 14, 2006. I don't remember too much about those early days of my first lens building project, because my husband, Dave had passed away just one month before. I was struggling to find my "new normal" after his passing. Being able to work on my business became a kind of therapy for me, especially as 2006 continued, because sales of my handmade doll clothes and handmade bear clothes peak from Labor Day to just before Christmas.
Once I got through that holiday rush, my good eBay friend Marty/OnceUponABid, who had also found out about Squidoo, started posting about seeing upticks in the amount of traffic that his Squidoo lens was bringing into his store.
In March of 2007, he and I both began to really "work" our lenses to maximize the benefit we were getting from them. We also began to suggest it to other eBay store owners as we began to see more and more results from our efforts. The amount of traffic coming into our stores was increasing, and the number of eBay store owners building lenses also started increasing. It was a movement that gained momentum, and gained the attention of Squidoo HQ *Waving Hello to Megan, Seth, and Gil*.
Prior to eBay Live 2007 in Boston, Megan sent an email out to a number of the eBay users who had build Squidoo Lenses seeking feedback, comments, and input for marketing purposes. Squidoo was going to have a booth on the Solutions Floor at eBay Live and wanted to put together an E Book of testimonials from other eBay users, and put together a postcard with the URL to the free E book and quotes from other Squidooers. I was fortunate to be one of those picked to have a quote on that postcard, and a section in the E Book. You can find a link to the E book and some of the testimonials on the eBayers on Squidoo HQ page. Just before eBay Live, Squidoo had become the #6 traffic source for my eBay store - and the majority of that movement up the traffic chart came in early 2007. For August 2007, it was tied for 4th, so its still moving up the charts to be a major traffic generator for me. For September 2007 - it was #2. Only eBay brought in more traffic, making SQUIDOO my top traffic source off-eBay. All of that occurred in just 1 years time - how amazing is that!
The picture is of me and Megan at the Squidoo booth on Day 2 - and I'm wearing my Squidoo shirt for their big promotion they had during eBay Live (larger version of the picture & explanation of their promotion is down below). Seth also gave a presentation, but I didn't get a chance to attend that *SHUCKS*. He also gave a pre eBay Live interview with Auctionbytes - here is the Podcast.
I've also expanded beyond promoting my eBay store to promote my websites, my Ecrater store, my Blujay store, my Etsy listings, and I've used the new SquidWho tool to create lenses on some of my favorite people (both modern and historical). I even created a Nebraska Cornhuskers lens because I'm such a huge fan (it's in my blood, I was born and raised in Lincoln). I can't stop building lenses because they're so much fun - I even started a lens for fellow Squidaholics Anonymous lensmasters like me.

Here is what Megan had to say about her eBay Live experience from the Squidoo Blog.

Second are my two Squidoo T-shirts. The orange one on the left is the one they were handing out at the booth. They had a giveaway where on Thursday and on Friday they gave away $9000 in free SquidOffers. Megan picked a random person who was wearing the shirt each day. To see who the winners are, you can visiting the Squidoo Blog entry about the event. The shirt on the right is my Citizen Squid shirt that Megan herself gave me. I'm very thrilled to have such a special Squidoo shirt.

Different things you can do with a Squidoo Lens
they are among the most versitible web pages out there
-
1) Generate traffic to your website or online store(s) and generate sales.
This is not limited to eBay or independent websites, there are other sites like Ecrater and Blujay that you can be promoting with a Squidoo Lens. Once thing I really like about Ecrater and Blujay is that they provide RSS feeds that you can put into your lens, that generate thumbnail pictures and Buy It Now or Add to Cart buttons - right on your lens! Clicking on the puts the item into your cart, and redirects the user to your store on that site for further shopping.
For the month of September 2007, Squidoo was the #2 source of traffic into my eBay store - only eBay.com beat it out. This is a traffic source that WORKS! -
2) Educate people about topics you are knowledgeable about
Even if you aren't an expert in a topic, there are things you enjoy or do a lot of that can be educational to others. I do this with my Intarsia Knitting lens. I have also created several lenses about running an online business, since I've been doing that since 2000 and have learned a few things that might be helpful to newbies. One of my personal favorites is my lens on Diversification. -
3) Generate affiliate revenues
There are eBay and Amazon modules that you can add to your lenses, that will allow viewers to purchase items from eBay and Amazon under Squidoo's affiliate number. Squidoo will share part of that revenue with you as the lensmaster who owns the lens that created the sale. These can be modules added to any lenses - so you might have a lens educating users about a topic, but by having the Amazon module with how-to books on that topic, make money!
Another option is to sign up for the affiliate programs of sites directly, and use their links in your lenses. Commission Junction runs the programs for several companies, including eBay. This allows you to promote your listings, or other seller's listing, and earn a commission if you drive a sale that you don't share with Squidoo.
I use a mixture of both kinds of affiliate modules in my lenses. -
4) Tell a story
Like I said before, my husband Dave passed away in 2006. It was very sudden, totally unexpected. I created a memorial lens about Dave - and am recording some of my happy memories and stories there. -
5) Talk about things you love/enjoy/like
I'm a huge sports fan, so I've created a lens dedicated to Nebraska Cornhusker sports. I love to read, especially series of books. I've created a lens on Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series, and did one on Robin Hobb's trilogies that I'm reading now. After that, I think I'll do Robin Owens' books. Part of my business is knitting items, so I have a couple of lenses dealing with knitting. Putting together a lens about your hobbies and interest can be a lot of fun - and with the affiliate program and Squidoo's revenue sharing, be profitable too! -
6) Combinations of all of the above
What's really great about lenses is they don't have to be limited to one of the above categories, you can do all of them, or combinations of those that fit together with the topic you're writing about. There are probably tons of other ways to use lenses that I haven't run across yet. Let your imagination run wild!
How to defeat writer's block when building lenses: My Top 10 List
Everyone has it happen - so here's some categories to think about to help
1) Favorite books: Write a lens about your favorite book, favorite series of books, or favorite author. These kinds of lenses are perfect matches for the Amazon Module and a chance to pick up some affiliate sales. I have created two of these so far: One on Robin Hobb and one on Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series.
2) Favorite music: Write a lens about your favorite music, favorite singer or musician, or favorite Broadway Musical. These lenses will also be perfect fits for the Amazon modules as well as Wikipedia to provide bio's for people. I've been working on several lenses on singers, including Sarah Brightman, George Strait, and Reba McEntire.
3) Favorite movies: Write a lens about your favorite movie, or favorite actor or actress, or favorite directors or producers. These kinds of lenses would be great for Netflix and You Tube modules, as well as Amazon modules. I did one lens on the works of Ken Burns, the documentary filmmaker.
4) Hobbies: AWESOME source for new lenses! Lots of the modules available can provide awesome source material and accessorries for lenses about your hobbies. If its a crafting hobby, You Tube can provide videos to help people learn. If its a collecting hobby, you can link to eBay items or Amazon items that someone starting in that hobby would like. Among my lens collection I have ones on Intarsia Knitting, Knitting, Cross Stitching, and How to turn a hobby into a business.
5) Collections: Did I mention writing a lens about what you collect is a great idea? When you love something enough to collect it, you've got the passion to put together a great lens. I've done a few of my own: Pokemon Trading Cards and Teddy Bears.
6) Do you sell online?: If you do, Squidoo lenses make great marketing tools for promoting those sales venues. I personally sell at a lot of venues, and I have created lenses to help promote them. My listing includes my eBay Store, my three websites, Blujay, Ecrater, and Etsy.
7) Where do you live?: There is a Squidoo group dedicated to cities, so why not create a lens about the town where you live now, or where you grew up? For me, that's the same place: Lincoln, Nebraska. Who knows a city best than the people who live there - you can share what makes your town a great place to live, and then join the Squidoo City Guide.
8) Think back to your childhood: Now, I know this will be harder for some of us than other, but how about doing a lens about your favorite childhood toys, books you loved to read growing up, or important milestones you remember, like getting your first color TV in the house - or the first TV - or electricity!
9) Historical Moments you've experienced: The greatest Historical Archive we have is our collective memories. However, for most of us, once we pass away, those memories are lost. If you've experienced one of these historical moments and its touched your life in some way, why not write a lens about it and record it for posterity? That's one reason I'm so excited about the new Ken Burns documentary on World War II, as it will capture a piece of that archive for all time.
10) Came up with an idea that's already been done: That's OK, do it anyway! As long as you come up with your own URL, there isn't any problem with having multiple lenses on the same topic. Some ways to get a new URL is to add something like "about" or "I love" in front of the name you wanted to use that you found is taken. You can also insert hyphens or rearrange the words to get a unique URL. Once you have your unique URL, you're off and rolling!!

SOOOO, CAN YOU CLUE ME HOW TO GET AN eBAY item or squidoo lens SHOWN THERE (I actually HAVE a 300 pg. book on the lenses I've made, and am just looking into self-publishing while waiting for Dr. Phil's agent to get it published; do YOU KNOW anything about eBAY publishing books?) AAAAND can you tell us the other 9 eBay site drivers you have, since OUR gain isn't anyone's loss?
